1 Judá y Tamar<br />En esos días, Judá dejó su casa y se fue a Adulam, donde se quedó con un hombre llamado Hira.

At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah.
2 Allí vio a una mujer cananea, la hija de Súa, y se casó con ella. Cuando se acostaron,

There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and made love to her;
3 ella quedó embarazada y dio a luz un hijo, y le puso por nombre Er.

she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er.
4 Después volvió a quedar embarazada y dio a luz otro hijo, y le puso por nombre Onán.

She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan.
5 Además, dio a luz un tercer hijo y lo llamó Sela. Cuando nació Sela, ellos vivían en Quezib.

She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him.
6 Con el transcurso del tiempo, Judá arregló que Er, su hijo mayor, se casara con una joven llamada Tamar.

Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
7 Pero Er era un hombre perverso ante los ojos del Señor<br />, y el Señor<br /> le quitó la vida.

But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the LORD’s sight; so the LORD put him to death.
8 Entonces Judá dijo a Onán, hermano de Er: «Cásate con Tamar, como nuestra ley exige al hermano de un hombre que haya muerto. Tú debes darle un heredero a tu hermano».

Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.”
9 Pero Onán no estaba dispuesto a tener un hijo que no fuera su propio heredero. Por eso, cada vez que tenía relaciones sexuales con la mujer de su hermano, derramaba el semen en el suelo. Esto evitaba que ella tuviera un hijo de su hermano.

But Onan knew that the child would not be his; so whenever he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from providing offspring for his brother.
10 Así que el Señor<br /> consideró una maldad que Onán negara un hijo a su hermano muerto, y el Señor<br /> también le quitó la vida a Onán.

What he did was wicked in the LORD’s sight; so the LORD put him to death also.
11 Entonces Judá le dijo a Tamar, su nuera: «Vuelve a la casa de tus padres y permanece viuda hasta que mi hijo Sela tenga edad suficiente para casarse contigo». (Pero en realidad, Judá no pensaba hacerlo porque temía que Sela también muriera, igual que sus dos hermanos). Entonces Tamar regresó a vivir a la casa de sus padres.

Judah then said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s household until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, just like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s household.
12 Unos años después, murió la esposa de Judá. Cumplido el período de luto, Judá y su amigo Hira el adulamita subieron a Timna para supervisar la esquila de sus ovejas.

After a long time Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had recovered from his grief, he went up to Timnah, to the men who were shearing his sheep, and his friend Hirah the Adullamite went with him.
13 Alguien le dijo a Tamar: «Mira, tu suegro sube a Timna para esquilar sus ovejas».

When Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep,”
14 Tamar ya sabía que Sela había crecido, pero aún no se había arreglado nada para que ella se casara con él. Así que se quitó la ropa de viuda y se cubrió con un velo para disfrazarse. Luego se sentó junto al camino, a la entrada de la aldea de Enaim, la cual está rumbo a Timna.

she took off her widow’s clothes, covered herself with a veil to disguise herself, and then sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that, though Shelah had now grown up, she had not been given to him as his wife.
15 Judá la vio y creyó que era una prostituta, porque ella tenía el rostro cubierto.

When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.
16 Entonces se detuvo y le hizo una propuesta indecente:<br />—Déjame tener sexo contigo —le dijo, sin darse cuenta de que era su propia nuera.<br />—¿Cuánto me pagarás por tener sexo contigo? —preguntó Tamar.

Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.” “And what will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked.
17 —Te enviaré un cabrito de mi rebaño —prometió Judá.<br />—¿Pero qué me darás como garantía de que enviarás el cabrito? —preguntó ella.

“I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” he said. “Will you give me something as a pledge until you send it?” she asked.
18 —¿Qué clase de garantía quieres? —respondió él.<br />Ella contestó:<br />—Déjame tu sello de identidad junto con su cordón, y el bastón que llevas.<br />Entonces Judá se los entregó. Después tuvo relaciones sexuales con ella, y Tamar quedó embarazada.

He said, “What pledge should I give you?” “Your seal and its cord, and the staff in your hand,” she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.
19 Luego ella regresó a su casa, se quitó el velo y se puso la ropa de viuda como de costumbre.

After she left, she took off her veil and put on her widow’s clothes again.
20 Más tarde Judá le pidió a su amigo Hira el adulamita que llevara el cabrito a la mujer y recogiera las cosas que le había dejado como garantía, pero Hira no pudo encontrarla.

Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order to get his pledge back from the woman, but he did not find her.
21 Entonces preguntó a los hombres de ese lugar:<br />—¿Dónde puedo encontrar a la prostituta del templo local que se sentaba junto al camino, a la entrada de Enaim?<br />—Nunca hemos tenido una prostituta del templo aquí —contestaron ellos.

He asked the men who lived there, “Where is the shrine prostitute who was beside the road at Enaim?” “There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here,” they said.
22 Entonces Hira regresó a donde estaba Judá y le dijo:<br />—No pude encontrarla por ninguna parte, y los hombres de la aldea afirman que nunca ha habido una prostituta del templo pagano en ese lugar.

So he went back to Judah and said, “I didn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there said, ‘There hasn’t been any shrine prostitute here.’ ”
23 —Entonces deja que se quede con las cosas que le di —dijo Judá—. Envié el cabrito, tal como acordamos, pero tú no pudiste encontrarla. Si regresamos a buscarla, seremos el hazmerreír del pueblo.

Then Judah said, “Let her keep what she has, or we will become a laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you didn’t find her.”
24 Unos tres meses después, le dijeron a Judá:<br />—Tu nuera Tamar se ha comportado como una prostituta y ahora, como consecuencia, está embarazada.<br />—¡Sáquenla y quémenla! —ordenó Judá.

About three months later Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of prostitution, and as a result she is now pregnant.” Judah said, “Bring her out and have her burned to death!”
25 Pero cuando la sacaban para matarla, ella envió el siguiente mensaje a su suegro: «El dueño de estas cosas fue quien me dejó embarazada. Fíjese bien. ¿De quién son este sello, este cordón y este bastón?».

As she was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. “I am pregnant by the man who owns these,” she said. And she added, “See if you recognize whose seal and cord and staff these are.”
26 Judá los reconoció enseguida y dijo:<br />—Ella es más justa que yo, porque no arreglé que ella se casara con mi hijo Sela.<br />Y Judá nunca más volvió a acostarse con Tamar.

Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I wouldn’t give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not sleep with her again.
27 Cuando llegó el tiempo de que Tamar diera a luz, se descubrió que esperaba gemelos.

When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb.
28 Durante el parto, uno de los niños sacó la mano, entonces la partera le ató un hilo rojo en la muñeca y anunció: «Este salió primero».

As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand; so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said, “This one came out first.”
29 Pero luego el niño metió la mano de vuelta, ¡y salió primero su hermano! Entonces la partera exclamó: «¡Vaya! ¿Cómo hiciste para abrirte brecha y salir primero?». Y lo llamaron Fares.

But when he drew back his hand, his brother came out, and she said, “So this is how you have broken out!” And he was named Perez.
30 Luego nació el niño que llevaba el hilo rojo en la muñeca, y lo llamaron Zera.

Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out. And he was named Zerah.
