Hebrews 10

NRS 1 Since the law has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered year after year, make perfect those who approach. NIV 1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming--not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. NRS 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased being offered, since the worshipers, cleansed once for all, would no longer have any consciousness of sin? NIV 2 If it could, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. NRS 3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sin year after year. NIV 3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, NRS 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. NIV 4 because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. NRS 5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, "Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me; NIV 5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; NRS 6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. NIV 6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. NRS 7 Then I said, "See, God, I have come to do your will, O God' (in the scroll of the book it is written of me)." NIV 7 Then I said, 'Here I am--it is written about me in the scroll-- I have come to do your will, O God.' " NRS 8 When he said above, "You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings" (these are offered according to the law), NIV 8 First he said, "Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them" (although the law required them to be made). NRS 9 then he added, "See, I have come to do your will." He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. NIV 9 Then he said, "Here I am, I have come to do your will." He sets aside the first to establish the second. NRS 10 And it is by God's will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. NIV 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. NRS 11 And every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. NIV 11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. NRS 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God," NIV 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. NRS 13 and since then has been waiting "until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet." NIV 13 Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, NRS 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. NIV 14 because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. NRS 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, NIV 15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: NRS 16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds," NIV 16 "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds." NRS 17 he also adds, "I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more." NIV 17 Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more." NRS 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. NIV 18 And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin. NRS 19 Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, NIV 19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, NRS 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), NIV 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, NRS 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, NIV 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, NRS 22 let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. NIV 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. NRS 23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. NIV 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. NRS 24 And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, NIV 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. NRS 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. NIV 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching. NRS 26 For if we willfully persist in sin after having received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, NIV 26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, NRS 27 but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. NIV 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. NRS 28 Anyone who has violated the law of Moses dies without mercy "on the testimony of two or three witnesses." NIV 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. NRS 29 How much worse punishment do you think will be deserved by those who have spurned the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant by which they were sanctified, and outraged the Spirit of grace? NIV 29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? NRS 30 For we know the one who said, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay." And again, "The Lord will judge his people." NIV 30 For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge his people." NRS 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. NIV 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. NRS 32 But recall those earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, NIV 32 Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering. NRS 33 sometimes being publicly exposed to abuse and persecution, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. NIV 33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. NRS 34 For you had compassion for those who were in prison, and you cheerfully accepted the plundering of your possessions, knowing that you yourselves possessed something better and more lasting. NIV 34 You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions. NRS 35 Do not, therefore, abandon that confidence of yours; it brings a great reward. NIV 35 So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. NRS 36 For you need endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised. NIV 36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. NRS 37 For yet "in a very little while, the one who is coming will come and will not delay; NIV 37 For in just a very little while, "He who is coming will come and will not delay. NRS 38 but my righteous one will live by faith. My soul takes no pleasure in anyone who shrinks back." NIV 38 But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him." NRS 39 But we are not among those who shrink back and so are lost, but among those who have faith and so are saved. NIV 39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.
