Isaiah 1

HNV 1 The vision of Yesha`yahu the son of Amotz, which he saw concerning Yehudah and Yerushalayim, in the days of `Uzziyah, Yotam, Achaz, and Hizkiyahu, kings of Yehudah. NIV 1 The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. HNV 2 Hear, heavens, And listen, eretz; for the LORD has spoken: I have nourished and brought up children, And they have rebelled against me. NIV 2 Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the LORD has spoken: "I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. HNV 3 The ox knows his owner, And the donkey his master's crib; But Yisra'el doesn't know, My people don't consider. NIV 3 The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner's manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand." HNV 4 Ah sinful nation, A people laden with iniquity, A seed of evil-doers, Children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the LORD. They have despised the Holy One of Yisra'el. They are estranged and backward. NIV 4 Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him. HNV 5 Why should you be beaten more, That you revolt more and more? The whole head is sick, And the whole heart faint. NIV 5 Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted. HNV 6 From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it: Wounds, welts, and open sores. They haven't been closed, neither bandaged, neither soothed with oil. NIV 6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness-- only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil. HNV 7 Your country is desolate. Your cities are burned with fire. Strangers devour your land in your presence, And it is desolate, As overthrown by strangers. NIV 7 Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers. HNV 8 The daughter of Tziyon is left like a shelter in a vineyard, Like a hut in a field of melons, Like a besieged city. NIV 8 The Daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a city under siege. HNV 9 Unless the LORD of hosts had left to us a very small remnant, We would have been as Sedom; We would have been like `Amorah. NIV 9 Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah. HNV 10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sedom! Listen to the law of our God, you people of `Amorah! NIV 10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah! HNV 11 "What are the multitude of your sacrifices to me?," says the LORD. "I have had enough of the burnt offerings of rams, And the fat of fed animals. I don't delight in the blood of bulls, Or of lambs, Or of male goats. NIV 11 "The multitude of your sacrifices-- what are they to me?" says the LORD. "I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats. HNV 12 When you come to appear before me, Who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts? NIV 12 When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts? HNV 13 Bring no more vain offerings. Incense is an abomination to me; New moons, Shabbatot, and convocations: I can't bear with evil assemblies. NIV 13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations-- I cannot bear your evil assemblies. HNV 14 My soul hates your New Moons and your appointed feasts; They are a burden to me. I am weary of bearing them. NIV 14 Your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts my soul hates. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. HNV 15 When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood. NIV 15 When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood; HNV 16 Wash yourselves, make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; Cease to do evil. NIV 16 wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong, HNV 17 Learn to do well. Seek justice, Relieve the oppressed, Judge the fatherless, Plead for the widow." NIV 17 learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow. HNV 18 "Come now, and let us reason together," says the LORD: "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. NIV 18 "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. HNV 19 If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land; NIV 19 If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land; HNV 20 But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured with the sword; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken it." NIV 20 but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. HNV 21 How the faithful city has become a prostitute! She was full of justice; righteousness lodged in her, But now murderers. NIV 21 See how the faithful city has become a harlot! She once was full of justice; righteousness used to dwell in her-- but now murderers! HNV 22 Your silver has become dross, Your wine mixed with water. NIV 22 Your silver has become dross, your choice wine is diluted with water. HNV 23 Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves. Everyone loves bribes, and follows after rewards. They don't judge the fatherless, Neither does the cause of the widow come to them. NIV 23 Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow's case does not come before them. HNV 24 Therefore the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, The Mighty One of Yisra'el, says: "Ah, I will get relief from my adversaries, And avenge myself of my enemies; NIV 24 Therefore the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: "Ah, I will get relief from my foes and avenge myself on my enemies. HNV 25 And I will turn my hand on you, Thoroughly purge away your dross, And will take away all your tin. NIV 25 I will turn my hand against you; I will thoroughly purge away your dross and remove all your impurities. HNV 26 I will restore your judges as at the first, And your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called 'The city of righteousness, A faithful town.' NIV 26 I will restore your judges as in days of old, your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City." HNV 27 Tziyon shall be redeemed with justice, And her converts with righteousness. NIV 27 Zion will be redeemed with justice, her penitent ones with righteousness. HNV 28 But the destruction of transgressors and sinners shall be together, And those who forsake the LORD shall be consumed. NIV 28 But rebels and sinners will both be broken, and those who forsake the LORD will perish. HNV 29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which you have desired, And you shall be confounded for the gardens that you have chosen. NIV 29 "You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen. HNV 30 For you shall be as an oak whose leaf fades, And as a garden that has no water. NIV 30 You will be like an oak with fading leaves, like a garden without water. HNV 31 The strong will be like tinder, And his work like a spark. They will both burn together, And no one will quench them." NIV 31 The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire."
