Isaiah 1

LEB 1 The vision of Isaiah son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, [and] Hezekiah, kings of Judah. NIV 1 The vision concerning Judah and Jerusalem that Isaiah son of Amoz saw during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. LEB 2 Hear, heavens, and listen, earth, for Yahweh has spoken: "I reared children and I brought [them] up, but they rebelled against me. NIV 2 Hear, O heavens! Listen, O earth! For the LORD has spoken: "I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me. LEB 3 An ox knows its owner and a donkey the manger of its master. Israel does not know; my people do not understand. NIV 3 The ox knows his master, the donkey his owner's manger, but Israel does not know, my people do not understand." LEB 4 Ah, sinful nation, a people heavy [with] iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly. They have forsaken Yahweh; they have despised the holy one of Israel. They are estranged [and gone] backward. NIV 4 Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! They have forsaken the LORD; they have spurned the Holy One of Israel and turned their backs on him. LEB 5 Why do you want to be beaten again? You continue [in] rebellion. [The] whole of [the] head [is] sick, and [the] whole of [the] heart [is] faint. NIV 5 Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted. LEB 6 From the sole of the foot and up to [the] head there is no health in it; bruise and sore and bleeding wound have not been cleansed, and they have not been bound up and not softened with the oil. NIV 6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness-- only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil. LEB 7 Your country [is] desolate, your cities [are] burned [with] fire; [As for] your land, aliens are devouring it in your presence, and [it is] desolate, like devastation [by] foreigners. NIV 7 Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers. LEB 8 And the daughter of Zion is left like a booth in a vineyard, like a shelter in a cucumber field, like a city that is besieged. NIV 8 The Daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a hut in a field of melons, like a city under siege. LEB 9 If Yahweh of hosts had not left us survivors, we would have been as few as Sodom, we would have become like Gomorrah. NIV 9 Unless the LORD Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah. LEB 10 Hear the word of Yahweh, rulers of Sodom! Listen [to] the teaching of our God, people of Gomorrah! NIV 10 Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah! LEB 11 What [is the] abundance of your sacrifices to me? says Yahweh. I have had enough [of] burnt offerings of rams and [the] fat [of] fattened animals and I do not delight in [the] blood of bulls and ram-lambs and goats. NIV 11 "The multitude of your sacrifices-- what are they to me?" says the LORD. "I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats. LEB 12 When you come to appear before me, who asked for this from your hand: you trampling my courts? NIV 12 When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts? LEB 13 You must not {continue} to bring offerings of futility, incense--it [is] an abomination to me; new moon and Sabbath, [the] calling of a convocation-- I cannot endure iniquity with [solemn] assembly. NIV 13 Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations-- I cannot bear your evil assemblies. LEB 14 Your new moons and your appointed festivals my soul hates; they have become to me like [a] burden, I am not able to bear [them]. NIV 14 Your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts my soul hates. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. LEB 15 And when you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I [will] not be listening. Your hands are full of blood. NIV 15 When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood; LEB 16 Wash! Make yourselves clean! Remove the evil of your doings from before my eyes! Cease to do evil! NIV 16 wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong, LEB 17 Learn to do good! Seek justice! Rescue [the] oppressed! Defend [the] orphan! Plead for [the] widow! NIV 17 learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow. LEB 18 "Come now, and let us argue," says Yahweh. "Even though your sins are like scarlet, they will be white like snow; even though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. NIV 18 "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. LEB 19 If you are willing and you are obedient, you shall eat the good of the land. NIV 19 If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land; LEB 20 But if you refuse and you rebel, you shall be devoured [by the] sword. For the mouth of Yahweh has spoken." NIV 20 but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." For the mouth of the LORD has spoken. LEB 21 How has a faithful city become like a whore? Full of justice, righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers. NIV 21 See how the faithful city has become a harlot! She once was full of justice; righteousness used to dwell in her-- but now murderers! LEB 22 Your silver has become [as] dross; Your wine [is] diluted with waters. NIV 22 Your silver has become dross, your choice wine is diluted with water. LEB 23 Your princes [are] rebels and companions of thieves. Every one loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not defend [the] orphan and [the] legal dispute of [the] widow does not come before them. NIV 23 Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow's case does not come before them. LEB 24 Therefore, the declaration of the Lord Yahweh of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: "Ah, I will be relieved of my enemies, and I will avenge myself on my foes. NIV 24 Therefore the Lord, the LORD Almighty, the Mighty One of Israel, declares: "Ah, I will get relief from my foes and avenge myself on my enemies. LEB 25 And I will turn my hand against you; I will purify your dross like lye, and I will remove all [of] your tin. NIV 25 I will turn my hand against you; I will thoroughly purge away your dross and remove all your impurities. LEB 26 And I will restore your judges, as at the first, and your counselors, as at the beginning. After this {you will be called} the city of righteousness, faithful city. NIV 26 I will restore your judges as in days of old, your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City." LEB 27 Zion will be redeemed by justice, and those of her who repent, by righteousness. NIV 27 Zion will be redeemed with justice, her penitent ones with righteousness. LEB 28 But [the] destruction [of] rebels and sinners [shall be] together, and those who forsake Yahweh will perish. NIV 28 But rebels and sinners will both be broken, and those who forsake the LORD will perish. LEB 29 For you will be ashamed of [the] oaks [in] which you delighted, and you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen. NIV 29 "You will be ashamed because of the sacred oaks in which you have delighted; you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen. LEB 30 For you shall be like an oak withering its leaves, and like a garden where there is no water for her. NIV 30 You will be like an oak with fading leaves, like a garden without water. LEB 31 And the strong [man] shall become like tinder, and his work like a spark. And both of them shall burn together, and there is not one to quench [them]." NIV 31 The mighty man will become tinder and his work a spark; both will burn together, with no one to quench the fire."
