Isaiah 11

NCV 1 A new branch will grow from a stump of a tree; so a new king will come from the family of Jesse. NIV 1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. NCV 2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon that king. The Spirit will give him wisdom and understanding, guidance and power. the Lord. NIV 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him-- the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD-- NCV 3 This king will be glad to obey the Lord. He will not judge by the way things look or decide by what he hears. NIV 3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; NCV 4 But he will judge the poor honestly; he will be fair in his decisions for the poor people of the land. At his command evil people will be punished, and by his words the wicked will be put to death. NIV 4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked. NCV 5 Goodness and fairness will give him strength, like a belt around his waist. NIV 5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist. NCV 6 Then wolves will live in peace with lambs, and leopards will lie down to rest with goats. Calves, lions, and young bulls will eat together, and a little child will lead them. NIV 6 The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. NCV 7 Cows and bears will eat together in peace. Their young will lie down to rest together. Lions will eat hay as oxen do. NIV 7 The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. NCV 8 A baby will be able to play near a cobra's hole, and a child will be able to put his hand into the nest of a poisonous snake. NIV 8 The infant will play near the hole of the cobra, and the young child put his hand into the viper's nest. NCV 9 They will not hurt or destroy each other on all my holy mountain, because the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the sea is full of water. NIV 9 They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. NCV 10 At that time the new king from the family of Jesse will stand as a banner for all peoples. The nations will come together around him, and the place where he lives will be filled with glory. NIV 10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his place of rest will be glorious. NCV 11 At that time the Lord will again reach out and take his people who are left alive in Assyria, North Egypt, South Egypt, Cush, Elam, Babylonia, Hamath, and all the islands of the sea. NIV 11 In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the remnant that is left of his people from Assyria, from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt, from Cush, from Elam, from Babylonia, from Hamath and from the islands of the sea. NCV 12 God will raise a banner as a sign for all nations, and he will gather the people of Israel who were forced from their country. from all parts of the earth. NIV 12 He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth. NCV 13 At that time Israel will not be jealous anymore, and Judah will have no more enemies. Israel will not be jealous of Judah, and Judah will not hate Israel. NIV 13 Ephraim's jealousy will vanish, and Judah's enemies will be cut off; Ephraim will not be jealous of Judah, nor Judah hostile toward Ephraim. NCV 14 But Israel and Judah will attack the Philistines on the west. Together they will take the riches from the people of the east. They will conquer Edom and Moab, and the people of Ammon will be under their control. NIV 14 They will swoop down on the slopes of Philistia to the west; together they will plunder the people to the east. They will lay hands on Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites will be subject to them. NCV 15 The Lord will dry up the Red Sea of Egypt. and dry it up with a scorching wind. He will divide it into seven small rivers so that people can walk across them with their sandals on. NIV 15 The LORD will dry up the gulf of the Egyptian sea; with a scorching wind he will sweep his hand over the Euphrates River. He will break it up into seven streams so that men can cross over in sandals. NCV 16 So God's people who are left alive will have a way to leave Assyria, just like the time the Israelites came out of Egypt. NIV 16 There will be a highway for the remnant of his people that is left from Assyria, as there was for Israel when they came up from Egypt.
