Isaiah 18

LEB

NIV

1 Ah! land [of the] whirring of wings, which [is] beyond the rivers of Cush,
1 Woe to the land of whirring wingsalong the rivers of Cush,
2 that sends messengers by the sea and in vessels of papyrus on [the] surface of [the] waters! Go, swift messengers, to a {tall} and {smooth} nation, to a people feared {near and far}, a {mighty, mighty} and trampling nation, whose land rivers divide.
2 which sends envoys by sea in papyrus boats over the water. Go, swift messengers, to a people tall and smooth-skinned, to a people feared far and wide, an aggressive nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers.
3 All [you] inhabitants of [the] world and dwellers of [the] earth, {when a signal is raised on the} mountains, you must look, and {when a trumpet is blown}, you must listen!
3 All you people of the world, you who live on the earth, when a banner is raised on the mountains, you will see it, and when a trumpet sounds, you will hear it.
4 For Yahweh said this to me: "I will be quiet, and I will look from my dwelling place like {clear heat because of light},<note: The meaning of this phrase is uncertain; perhaps the "light" is sunlight> like a cloud of dew in [the] heat of harvest."
4 This is what the LORD says to me: “I will remain quiet and will look on from my dwelling place, like shimmering heat in the sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.”
5 For before [the] harvest, {when the blossom is complete} and a blossom becomes ripening fruit, and one cuts off the shoots with pruning hooks, and one removes, tears away the tendrils.
5 For, before the harvest, when the blossom is gone and the flower becomes a ripening grape, he will cut off the shoots with pruning knives, and cut down and take away the spreading branches.
6 They shall {all be left} for birds of prey of [the] mountains and for the animals of the earth. And the birds of prey will pass the summer on it, and every animal of the earth will winter on it.
6 They will all be left to the mountain birds of prey and to the wild animals; the birds will feed on them all summer, the wild animals all winter.
7 At that time, a gift will be brought to Yahweh of hosts [from] a {tall}<note: Literally "stretched out"> and {smooth}<note: Literally "peeled," "wiped clean," or "hairless"> people, and from a people feared near and far, a mighty, mighty and trampling nation, whose land [the] rivers divide, to the place of the name of Yahweh of hosts, the mountain of Zion.
7 At that time gifts will be brought to the LORD Almighty from a people tall and smooth-skinned, from a people feared far and wide, an aggressive nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers— the gifts will be brought to Mount Zion, the place of the Name of the LORD Almighty.
