Isaiah 24

ASV 1 Behold, Jehovah maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. NIV 1 See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants-- ASV 2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the creditor, so with the debtor; as with the taker of interest, so with the giver of interest to him. NIV 2 it will be the same for priest as for people, for master as for servant, for mistress as for maid, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor. ASV 3 The earth shall be utterly emptied, and utterly laid waste; for Jehovah hath spoken this word. NIV 3 The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word. ASV 4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the lofty people of the earth do languish. NIV 4 The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish. ASV 5 The earth also is polluted under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant. NIV 5 The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. ASV 6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are found guilty: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. NIV 6 Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth's inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left. ASV 7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merry-hearted do sigh. NIV 7 The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan. ASV 8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. NIV 8 The gaiety of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent. ASV 9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it. NIV 9 No longer do they drink wine with a song; the beer is bitter to its drinkers. ASV 10 The waste city is broken down; every house is shut up, that no man may come in. NIV 10 The ruined city lies desolate; the entrance to every house is barred. ASV 11 There is a crying in the streets because of the wine; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone. NIV 11 In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all gaiety is banished from the earth. ASV 12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction. NIV 12 The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pieces. ASV 13 For thus shall it be in the midst of the earth among the peoples, as the shaking of an olive-tree, as the gleanings when the vintage is done. NIV 13 So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest. ASV 14 These shall lift up their voice, they shall shout; for the majesty of Jehovah they cry aloud from the sea. NIV 14 They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the LORD's majesty. ASV 15 Wherefore glorify ye Jehovah in the east, even the name of Jehovah, the God of Israel, in the isles of the sea. NIV 15 Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea. ASV 16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs: Glory to the righteous. But I said, I pine away, I pine away, woe is me! the treacherous have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous have dealt very treacherously. NIV 16 From the ends of the earth we hear singing: "Glory to the Righteous One." But I said, "I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!" ASV 17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth. NIV 17 Terror and pit and snare await you, O people of the earth. ASV 18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows on high are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. NIV 18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake. ASV 19 The earth is utterly broken, the earth is rent asunder, the earth is shaken violently. NIV 19 The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is thoroughly shaken. ASV 20 The earth shall stagger like a drunken man, and shall sway to and fro like a hammock; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fall, and not rise again. NIV 20 The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls--never to rise again. ASV 21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that Jehovah will punish the host of the high ones on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. NIV 21 In that day the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below. ASV 22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison; and after many days shall they be visited. NIV 22 They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days. ASV 23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed; for Jehovah of hosts will reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem; and before his elders shall be glory. NIV 23 The moon will be abashed, the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders, gloriously.
