Isaiah 24

GNT 1 The Lord is going to devastate the earth and leave it desolate. He will twist the earth's surface and scatter its people. NIV 1 See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants-- GNT 2 Everyone will meet the same fate - the priests and the people, slaves and masters, buyers and sellers, lenders and borrowers, rich and poor. NIV 2 it will be the same for priest as for people, for master as for servant, for mistress as for maid, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor. GNT 3 The earth will lie shattered and ruined. The Lord has spoken and it will be done. NIV 3 The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word. GNT 4 The earth dries up and withers; the whole world grows weak; both earth and sky decay. NIV 4 The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish. GNT 5 The people have defiled the earth by breaking God's laws and by violating the covenant he made to last forever. NIV 5 The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. GNT 6 So God has pronounced a curse on the earth. Its people are paying for what they have done. Fewer and fewer remain alive. NIV 6 Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth's inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left. GNT 7 The grapevines wither, and wine is becoming scarce. Everyone who was once happy is now sad, NIV 7 The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan. GNT 8 and the joyful music of their harps and drums has ceased. NIV 8 The gaiety of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent. GNT 9 There is no more happy singing over wine; no one enjoys its taste any more. NIV 9 No longer do they drink wine with a song; the beer is bitter to its drinkers. GNT 10 In the city everything is in chaos, and people lock themselves in their houses for safety. NIV 10 The ruined city lies desolate; the entrance to every house is barred. GNT 11 People shout in the streets because there is no more wine. Happiness is gone forever; it has been banished from the land. NIV 11 In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all gaiety is banished from the earth. GNT 12 The city is in ruins, and its gates have been broken down. NIV 12 The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pieces. GNT 13 This is what will happen in every nation all over the world. It will be like the end of harvest, when the olives have been beaten off every tree and the last grapes picked from the vines. NIV 13 So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest. GNT 14 Those who survive will sing for joy. Those in the West will tell how great the Lord is, NIV 14 They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the LORD's majesty. GNT 15 and those in the East will praise him. The people who live along the sea will praise the Lord, the God of Israel. NIV 15 Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea. GNT 16 From the most distant parts of the world we will hear songs in praise of Israel, the righteous nation. But there is no hope for me! I am wasting away! Traitors continue to betray, and their treachery grows worse and worse. NIV 16 From the ends of the earth we hear singing: "Glory to the Righteous One." But I said, "I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!" GNT 17 Listen to me, everyone! There are terrors, pits, and traps waiting for you. NIV 17 Terror and pit and snare await you, O people of the earth. GNT 18 Anyone who tries to escape from the terror will fall in a pit, and anyone who escapes from the pit will be caught in a trap. Torrents of rain will pour from the sky, and earth's foundations will shake. NIV 18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake. GNT 19 The earth will crack and shatter and split open. NIV 19 The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is thoroughly shaken. GNT 20 The earth itself will stagger like a drunk, sway like a hut in a storm. The world is weighed down by its sins; it will collapse and never rise again. NIV 20 The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls--never to rise again. GNT 21 A time is coming when the Lord will punish the powers above and the rulers of the earth. NIV 21 In that day the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below. GNT 22 God will crowd kings together like prisoners in a pit. He will shut them in prison until the time of their punishment comes. NIV 22 They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days. GNT 23 The moon will grow dark, and the sun will no longer shine, for the Lord Almighty will be king. He will rule in Jerusalem on Mount Zion, and the leaders of the people will see his glory. NIV 23 The moon will be abashed, the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders, gloriously.
