Isaiah 24

WBT 1 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad its inhabitants. NIV 1 See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; he will ruin its face and scatter its inhabitants-- WBT 2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of interest, so with the giver of interest to him. NIV 2 it will be the same for priest as for people, for master as for servant, for mistress as for maid, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor. WBT 3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word. NIV 3 The earth will be completely laid waste and totally plundered. The LORD has spoken this word. WBT 4 The earth mourneth [and] fadeth away, the world languisheth [and] fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. NIV 4 The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish. WBT 5 The earth also is defiled under its inhabitants; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. NIV 5 The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes and broken the everlasting covenant. WBT 6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell in it are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. NIV 6 Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth's inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left. WBT 7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merry-hearted do sigh. NIV 7 The new wine dries up and the vine withers; all the merrymakers groan. WBT 8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. NIV 8 The gaiety of the tambourines is stilled, the noise of the revelers has stopped, the joyful harp is silent. WBT 9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it. NIV 9 No longer do they drink wine with a song; the beer is bitter to its drinkers. WBT 10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may enter. NIV 10 The ruined city lies desolate; the entrance to every house is barred. WBT 11 [There] is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone. NIV 11 In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy turns to gloom, all gaiety is banished from the earth. WBT 12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction. NIV 12 The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pieces. WBT 13 When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, [there shall be] as the shaking of an olive-tree, [and] as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done. NIV 13 So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest. WBT 14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea. NIV 14 They raise their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the LORD's majesty. WBT 15 Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, [even] the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea. NIV 15 Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea. WBT 16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, [even] glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe to me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yes, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously. NIV 16 From the ends of the earth we hear singing: "Glory to the Righteous One." But I said, "I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!" WBT 17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, [are] upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth. NIV 17 Terror and pit and snare await you, O people of the earth. WBT 18 And it shall come to pass, [that] he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. NIV 18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake. WBT 19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is entirely dissolved, the earth is exceedingly moved. NIV 19 The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is thoroughly shaken. WBT 20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression of it shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. NIV 20 The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls--never to rise again. WBT 21 And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones [that are] on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. NIV 21 In that day the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings on the earth below. WBT 22 And they shall be gathered, [as] prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited. NIV 22 They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be shut up in prison and be punished after many days. WBT 23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign on mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously. NIV 23 The moon will be abashed, the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before its elders, gloriously.
