Isaiah 26

NLT 1 In that day, everyone in the land of Judah will sing this song: Our city is strong! We are surrounded by the walls of God’s salvation. NIV 1 In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; God makes salvation its walls and ramparts. NLT 2 Open the gates to all who are righteous; allow the faithful to enter. NIV 2 Open the gates that the righteous nation may enter, the nation that keeps faith. NLT 3 You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! NIV 3 You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. NLT 4 Trust in the always, for the is the eternal Rock. NIV 4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal. NLT 5 He humbles the proud and brings down the arrogant city. He brings it down to the dust. NIV 5 He humbles those who dwell on high, he lays the lofty city low; he levels it to the ground and casts it down to the dust. NLT 6 The poor and oppressed trample it underfoot, and the needy walk all over it. NIV 6 Feet trample it down-- the feet of the oppressed, the footsteps of the poor. NLT 7 But for those who are righteous, the way is not steep and rough. You are a God who does what is right, and you smooth out the path ahead of them. NIV 7 The path of the righteous is level; O upright One, you make the way of the righteous smooth. NLT 8 , we show our trust in you by obeying your laws; our heart’s desire is to glorify your name. NIV 8 Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts. NLT 9 In the night I search for you; in the morning I earnestly seek you. For only when you come to judge the earth will people learn what is right. NIV 9 My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you. When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness. NLT 10 Your kindness to the wicked does not make them do good. Although others do right, the wicked keep doing wrong and take no notice of the ’s majesty. NIV 10 Though grace is shown to the wicked, they do not learn righteousness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil and regard not the majesty of the LORD. NLT 11 O , they pay no attention to your upraised fist. Show them your eagerness to defend your people. Then they will be ashamed. Let your fire consume your enemies. NIV 11 O LORD, your hand is lifted high, but they do not see it. Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame; let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them. NLT 12 , you will grant us peace; all we have accomplished is really from you. NIV 12 LORD, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us. NLT 13 O our God, others have ruled us, but you alone are the one we worship. NIV 13 O LORD, our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us, but your name alone do we honor. NLT 14 Those we served before are dead and gone. Their departed spirits will never return! You attacked them and destroyed them, and they are long forgotten. NIV 14 They are now dead, they live no more; those departed spirits do not rise. You punished them and brought them to ruin; you wiped out all memory of them. NLT 15 O , you have made our nation great; yes, you have made us great. You have extended our borders, and we give you the glory! NIV 15 You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; you have enlarged the nation. You have gained glory for yourself; you have extended all the borders of the land. NLT 16 , in distress we searched for you. We prayed beneath the burden of your discipline. NIV 16 LORD, they came to you in their distress; when you disciplined them, they could barely whisper a prayer. NLT 17 Just as a pregnant woman writhes and cries out in pain as she gives birth, so were we in your presence, . NIV 17 As a woman with child and about to give birth writhes and cries out in her pain, so were we in your presence, O LORD. NLT 18 We, too, writhe in agony, but nothing comes of our suffering. We have not given salvation to the earth, nor brought life into the world. NIV 18 We were with child, we writhed in pain, but we gave birth to wind. We have not brought salvation to the earth; we have not given birth to people of the world. NLT 19 But those who die in the will live; their bodies will rise again! Those who sleep in the earth will rise up and sing for joy! For your life-giving light will fall like dew on your people in the place of the dead! NIV 19 But your dead will live; their bodies will rise. You who dwell in the dust, wake up and shout for joy. Your dew is like the dew of the morning; the earth will give birth to her dead. NLT 20 Go home, my people, and lock your doors! Hide yourselves for a little while until the ’s anger has passed. NIV 20 Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut the doors behind you; hide yourselves for a little while until his wrath has passed by. NLT 21 Look! The is coming from heaven to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will no longer hide those who have been killed. They will be brought out for all to see. NIV 21 See, the LORD is coming out of his dwelling to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will disclose the blood shed upon her; she will conceal her slain no longer.
