Isaiah 26

RHE 1 In that day shall this canticle be sung in the land of Juda. Sion the city of our strength a saviour, a wall and a bulwark shall be set therein. NIV 1 In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; God makes salvation its walls and ramparts. RHE 2 Open ye the gates, and let the just nation, that keepeth the truth, enter in. NIV 2 Open the gates that the righteous nation may enter, the nation that keeps faith. RHE 3 The old error is passed away: thou wilt keep peace: peace, because we have hoped in thee. NIV 3 You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. RHE 4 You have hoped in the Lord for evermore, in the Lord God mighty for ever. NIV 4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal. RHE 5 For he shall bring down them that dwell on high, the high city he shall lay low. He shall bring it down even to the ground, he shall pull it down even to the dust. NIV 5 He humbles those who dwell on high, he lays the lofty city low; he levels it to the ground and casts it down to the dust. RHE 6 The foot shall tread it down, the feet of the poor, the steps of the needy. NIV 6 Feet trample it down-- the feet of the oppressed, the footsteps of the poor. RHE 7 The way of the just is right, the path of the just is right to walk in. NIV 7 The path of the righteous is level; O upright One, you make the way of the righteous smooth. RHE 8 And in the way of thy judgments, O Lord, we have patiently waited for thee: thy name, and thy remembrance are the desire of the soul. NIV 8 Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts. RHE 9 My soul hath desired thee in the night: yea, and with my spirit within me in the morning early I will watch to thee. When thou shalt do thy judgments on the earth, the inhabitants of the world shall learn justice. NIV 9 My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you. When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness. RHE 10 Let us have pity on the wicked, but he will not learn justice: in the land of the saints he hath done wicked things, and he shall not see the glory of the Lord. NIV 10 Though grace is shown to the wicked, they do not learn righteousness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil and regard not the majesty of the LORD. RHE 11 Lord, let thy hand be exalted, and let them not see: let the envious people see, and be confounded: and let fire devour thy enemies. NIV 11 O LORD, your hand is lifted high, but they do not see it. Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame; let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them. RHE 12 Lord, thou wilt give us peace: for thou hast wrought all our works for us. NIV 12 LORD, you establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished you have done for us. RHE 13 O Lord our God, other lords besides thee have had dominion over us, only in thee let us remember thy name. NIV 13 O LORD, our God, other lords besides you have ruled over us, but your name alone do we honor. RHE 14 Let not the dead live, let not the giants rise again: therefore hast visited and destroyed them, and hast destroyed all their memory. NIV 14 They are now dead, they live no more; those departed spirits do not rise. You punished them and brought them to ruin; you wiped out all memory of them. RHE 15 Thou hast been favourable to the nation, O Lord, thou hast been favourable to the nation: art thou glorified? thou hast removed all the ends of the earth far off. NIV 15 You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; you have enlarged the nation. You have gained glory for yourself; you have extended all the borders of the land. RHE 16 Lord, they have sought after thee in distress, in the tribulation of murmuring thy instruction was with them. NIV 16 LORD, they came to you in their distress; when you disciplined them, they could barely whisper a prayer. RHE 17 As a woman with child, when she draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs: so are we become in thy presence, O Lord. NIV 17 As a woman with child and about to give birth writhes and cries out in her pain, so were we in your presence, O LORD. RHE 18 We have conceived, and been as it were in labour, and have brought forth wind: we have not wrought salvation on the earth, therefore the inhabitants of the earth have not fallen. NIV 18 We were with child, we writhed in pain, but we gave birth to wind. We have not brought salvation to the earth; we have not given birth to people of the world. RHE 19 Thy dead men shall live, my slain shall rise again: awake, and give praise, ye that dwell in the dust: for thy dew is the dew of the light: and the land of the giants thou shalt pull down into ruin. NIV 19 But your dead will live; their bodies will rise. You who dwell in the dust, wake up and shout for joy. Your dew is like the dew of the morning; the earth will give birth to her dead. RHE 20 Go, my people, enter into thy chambers, shut thy doors upon thee, hide thyself a little for a moment, until the indignation pass away. NIV 20 Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut the doors behind you; hide yourselves for a little while until his wrath has passed by. RHE 21 For behold the Lord will come out of his place, to visit the iniquity of the inhabitant of the earth against him: and the earth shall disclose her blood, and shall cover her slain no more. NIV 21 See, the LORD is coming out of his dwelling to punish the people of the earth for their sins. The earth will disclose the blood shed upon her; she will conceal her slain no longer.
