Isaiah 28

RHE 1 Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower the glory his joy, who were on the head of the fat valley, staggering with wine. NIV 1 Woe to that wreath, the pride of Ephraim's drunkards, to the fading flower, his glorious beauty, set on the head of a fertile valley-- to that city, the pride of those laid low by wine! RHE 2 Behold the Lord is mighty and strong, as a storm of hail: a destroying whirlwind, as the violence of many waters overflowing, and sent forth upon a spacious land. NIV 2 See, the Lord has one who is powerful and strong. Like a hailstorm and a destructive wind, like a driving rain and a flooding downpour, he will throw it forcefully to the ground. RHE 3 The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under feet. NIV 3 That wreath, the pride of Ephraim's drunkards, will be trampled underfoot. RHE 4 And the fading tower the glory of his joy, who is on the head of the fat valley, shall be as a hasty fruit before the ripeness of autumn: which when he that seeth it shall behold, as soon he taketh it in his hand, he will eat it up. NIV 4 That fading flower, his glorious beauty, set on the head of a fertile valley, will be like a fig ripe before harvest-- as soon as someone sees it and takes it in his hand, he swallows it. RHE 5 In that day the Lord of hosts shall be a crown of glory, and a garland of joy to the residue of his people: NIV 5 In that day the LORD Almighty will be a glorious crown, a beautiful wreath for the remnant of his people. RHE 6 And a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and strength to them that return out of the battle to the gate. NIV 6 He will be a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, a source of strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate. RHE 7 But these also have been ignorant through wine, and through drunkenness have erred: the priest and the prophet have been ignorant through drunkenness, they are swallowed up with wine, they have gone astray in drunkenness, they have not known him that seeth, they have been ignorant of judgment. NIV 7 And these also stagger from wine and reel from beer: Priests and prophets stagger from beer and are befuddled with wine; they reel from beer, they stagger when seeing visions, they stumble when rendering decisions. RHE 8 For all the tables were full of vomit and filth, so that there was no more place. NIV 8 All the tables are covered with vomit and there is not a spot without filth. RHE 9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand the hearing? them that are weaned from the milk, that are drawn away from the breasts. NIV 9 "Who is it he is trying to teach? To whom is he explaining his message? To children weaned from their milk, to those just taken from the breast? RHE 10 For command, command again; command, command again; expect, expect again; a little there, a little there. NIV 10 For it is: Do and do, do and do, rule on rule, rule on rule; a little here, a little there." RHE 11 For with the speech of lips, and with another tongue he will speak to this people. NIV 11 Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people, RHE 12 To whom he said: This is my rest, refresh the weary, and this is my refreshing: and they would not hear. NIV 12 to whom he said, "This is the resting place, let the weary rest"; and, "This is the place of repose"-- but they would not listen. RHE 13 And the word of the Lord shall be to them: Command, command again; command, command again; expect, expect again; a little there, a little there: that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. NIV 13 So then, the word of the LORD to them will become: Do and do, do and do, rule on rule, rule on rule; a little here, a little there-- so that they will go and fall backward, be injured and snared and captured. RHE 14 Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, who rule over my people that is in Jerusalem. NIV 14 Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem. RHE 15 For you have said: We have entered into a league with death, and we have made a covenant with hell. When the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come upon us: for we have placed our hope in lies, and by falsehood we are protected. NIV 15 You boast, "We have entered into a covenant with death, with the grave we have made an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie our refuge and falsehood our hiding place." RHE 16 Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Behold I will lay a stone in the foundations of Sion, a tried stone, a corner stone, a precious stone, founded in the foundation. He that believeth, let him not hasten. NIV 16 So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed. RHE 17 And I will set judgment in weight, and justice in measure: and hail shall overturn the hope of falsehood: and waters shall overflow its protection. NIV 17 I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line; hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie, and water will overflow your hiding place. RHE 18 And your league with death shall be abolished, and your covenant with hell shall not stand: when the overflowing scourge shall pass, you shall be trodden down by it. NIV 18 Your covenant with death will be annulled; your agreement with the grave will not stand. When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by, you will be beaten down by it. RHE 19 Whensoever it shall pass through, it shall take you away: because in the morning early it shall pass through, in the day and in the night, and vexation alone shall make you understand what you hear. NIV 19 As often as it comes it will carry you away; morning after morning, by day and by night, it will sweep through." The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror. RHE 20 For the bed is straitened, so that one must fall out, and a short covering cannot cover both. NIV 20 The bed is too short to stretch out on, the blanket too narrow to wrap around you. RHE 21 For the Lord shall stand up as in the mountain of divisions: he shall be angry as in the valley which is in Gabaon: that he may do his work, his strange work: that he may perform his work, his work is strange to him. NIV 21 The LORD will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim, he will rouse himself as in the Valley of Gibeon-- to do his work, his strange work, and perform his task, his alien task. RHE 22 And now do not mock, lest your bonds be tied strait. For I have heard of the Lord the God of hosts a consumption and a cutting short upon all the earth. NIV 22 Now stop your mocking, or your chains will become heavier; the Lord, the LORD Almighty, has told me of the destruction decreed against the whole land. RHE 23 Give ear, and hear my voice, hearken, and hear my speech. NIV 23 Listen and hear my voice; pay attention and hear what I say. RHE 24 Shall the ploughman plough all the day to sow, shall he open and harrow his ground? NIV 24 When a farmer plows for planting, does he plow continually? Does he keep on breaking up and harrowing the soil? RHE 25 Will he not, when he hath made plain the surface thereof, soweth, and scatter cummin, and put wheat in order, and barley, and millet, and vetches in their bounds? NIV 25 When he has leveled the surface, does he not sow caraway and scatter cummin? Does he not plant wheat in its place, barley in its plot, and spelt in its field? RHE 26 For he will instruct him in judgment: his God will teach him. NIV 26 His God instructs him and teaches him the right way. RHE 27 For gith shall not be thrashed with saws, neither shall the cart wheel turn about upon cummin: but gith shall be beaten out with a rod, and cumin with a staff. NIV 27 Caraway is not threshed with a sledge, nor is a cartwheel rolled over cummin; caraway is beaten out with a rod, and cummin with a stick. RHE 28 But breadcorn shall be broken small: but the thrasher shall not thrash it for ever, neither shall the cart wheel hurt it, nor break it with its teeth. NIV 28 Grain must be ground to make bread; so one does not go on threshing it forever. Though he drives the wheels of his threshing cart over it, his horses do not grind it. RHE 29 This also is come forth from the Lord God of hosts, to make his counsel wonderful, and magnify justice. NIV 29 All this also comes from the LORD Almighty, wonderful in counsel and magnificent in wisdom.
