Isaiah 3

ESV 1 For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water; NIV 1 See now, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, is about to take from Jerusalem and Judah both supply and support: all supplies of food and all supplies of water, ESV 2 the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, NIV 2 the hero and warrior, the judge and prophet, the soothsayer and elder, ESV 3 the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms. NIV 3 the captain of fifty and man of rank, the counselor, skilled craftsman and clever enchanter. ESV 4 And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them. NIV 4 I will make boys their officials; mere children will govern them. ESV 5 And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable. NIV 5 People will oppress each other-- man against man, neighbor against neighbor. The young will rise up against the old, the base against the honorable. ESV 6 For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: "You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule"; NIV 6 A man will seize one of his brothers at his father's home, and say, "You have a cloak, you be our leader; take charge of this heap of ruins!" ESV 7 in that day he will speak out, saying: "I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people." NIV 7 But in that day he will cry out, "I have no remedy. I have no food or clothing in my house; do not make me the leader of the people." ESV 8 For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. NIV 8 Jerusalem staggers, Judah is falling; their words and deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. ESV 9 For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves. NIV 9 The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves. ESV 10 Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. NIV 10 Tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will enjoy the fruit of their deeds. ESV 11 Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him. NIV 11 Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them! They will be paid back for what their hands have done. ESV 12 My people--infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths. NIV 12 Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. O my people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path. ESV 13 The LORD has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples. NIV 13 The LORD takes his place in court; he rises to judge the people. ESV 14 The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: "It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses. NIV 14 The LORD enters into judgment against the elders and leaders of his people: "It is you who have ruined my vineyard; the plunder from the poor is in your houses. ESV 15 What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?" declares the Lord GOD of hosts. NIV 15 What do you mean by crushing my people and grinding the faces of the poor?" declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. ESV 16 The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet, NIV 16 The LORD says, "The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, tripping along with mincing steps, with ornaments jingling on their ankles. ESV 17 therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts. NIV 17 Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald." ESV 18 In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; NIV 18 In that day the Lord will snatch away their finery: the bangles and headbands and crescent necklaces, ESV 19 the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; NIV 19 the earrings and bracelets and veils, ESV 20 the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; NIV 20 the headdresses and ankle chains and sashes, the perfume bottles and charms, ESV 21 the signet rings and nose rings; NIV 21 the signet rings and nose rings, ESV 22 the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; NIV 22 the fine robes and the capes and cloaks, the purses ESV 23 the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils. NIV 23 and mirrors, and the linen garments and tiaras and shawls. ESV 24 Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. NIV 24 Instead of fragrance there will be a stench; instead of a sash, a rope; instead of well-dressed hair, baldness; instead of fine clothing, sackcloth; instead of beauty, branding. ESV 25 Your men shall fall by the sword and your mighty men in battle. NIV 25 Your men will fall by the sword, your warriors in battle. ESV 26 And her gates shall lament and mourn; empty, she shall sit on the ground. NIV 26 The gates of Zion will lament and mourn; destitute, she will sit on the ground.
