Isaiah 40

WEB 1 Comfort you, comfort you my people, says your God. NIV 1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. WEB 2 Speak comfortably to Jerusalem; and cry to her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received of Yahweh's hand double for all her sins. NIV 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins. WEB 3 The voice of one who cries, Prepare you in the wilderness the way of Yahweh; make level in the desert a highway for our God. NIV 3 A voice of one calling: "In the desert prepare the way for the LORD ; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. WEB 4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the uneven shall be made level, and the rough places a plain: NIV 4 Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. WEB 5 and the glory of Yahweh shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken it. NIV 5 And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken." WEB 6 The voice of one saying, Cry. One said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the glory of it is as the flower of the field. NIV 6 A voice says, "Cry out." And I said, "What shall I cry?" "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field. WEB 7 The grass withers, the flower fades, because the breath of Yahweh blows on it; surely the people is grass. NIV 7 The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the LORD blows on them. Surely the people are grass. WEB 8 The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God shall stand forever. NIV 8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever." WEB 9 You who tell good news to Zion, go up on a high mountain; you who tell good news to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with strength; lift it up, don't be afraid; say to the cities of Judah, Behold, your God! NIV 9 You who bring good tidings to Zion, go up on a high mountain. You who bring good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout, lift it up, do not be afraid; say to the towns of Judah, "Here is your God!" WEB 10 Behold, the Lord Yahweh will come as a mighty one, and his arm will rule for him: Behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. NIV 10 See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power, and his arm rules for him. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. WEB 11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom, [and] will gently lead those who have their young. NIV 11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. WEB 12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out the sky with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? NIV 12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? WEB 13 Who has directed the Spirit of Yahweh, or being his counselor has taught him? NIV 13 Who has understood the mind of the LORD, or instructed him as his counselor? WEB 14 With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and shown to him the way of understanding? NIV 14 Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge or showed him the path of understanding? WEB 15 Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are accounted as the small dust of the balance: Behold, he takes up the isles as a very little thing. NIV 15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust. WEB 16 Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the animals of it sufficient for a burnt offering. NIV 16 Lebanon is not sufficient for altar fires, nor its animals enough for burnt offerings. WEB 17 All the nations are as nothing before him; they are accounted by him as less than nothing, and vanity. NIV 17 Before him all the nations are as nothing; they are regarded by him as worthless and less than nothing. WEB 18 To whom then will you liken God? or what likeness will you compare to him? NIV 18 To whom, then, will you compare God? What image will you compare him to? WEB 19 The image, a workman has cast [it], and the goldsmith overlays it with gold, and casts [for it] silver chains. NIV 19 As for an idol, a craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it. WEB 20 He who is too impoverished for [such] an offering chooses a tree that will not rot; he seeks to him a skillful workman to set up an engraved image, that shall not be moved. NIV 20 A man too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot. He looks for a skilled craftsman to set up an idol that will not topple. WEB 21 Have you not known? have yet not heard? has it not been told you from the beginning? have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? NIV 21 Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? WEB 22 [It is] he who sits above the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants of it are as grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in; NIV 22 He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. WEB 23 who brings princes to nothing; who makes the judges of the earth as vanity. NIV 23 He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. WEB 24 Yes, they have not been planted; yes, they have not been sown; yes, their stock has not taken root in the earth: moreover he blows on them, and they wither, and the whirlwind takes them away as stubble. NIV 24 No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff. WEB 25 To whom then will you liken me, that I should be equal [to him]? says the Holy One. NIV 25 "To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One. WEB 26 Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these, who brings out their host by number; he calls them all by name; by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power, not one is lacking. NIV 26 Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. WEB 27 Why say you, Jacob, and speak, Israel, My way is hid from Yahweh, and the justice [due] to me is passed away from my God? NIV 27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God"? WEB 28 Have you not known? have you not heard? The everlasting God, Yahweh, the Creator of the ends of the earth, doesn't faint, neither is weary; there is no searching of his understanding. NIV 28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. WEB 29 He gives power to the faint; and to him who has no might he increases strength. NIV 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. WEB 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: NIV 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; WEB 31 but those who wait for Yahweh shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint. NIV 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
