Isaiah 48

ASV 1 Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah; who swear by the name of Jehovah, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness NIV 1 "Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel and come from the line of Judah, you who take oaths in the name of the LORD and invoke the God of Israel-- but not in truth or righteousness-- ASV 2 (for they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; Jehovah of hosts is his name): NIV 2 you who call yourselves citizens of the holy city and rely on the God of Israel-- the LORD Almighty is his name: ASV 3 I have declared the former things from of old; yea, they went forth out of my mouth, and I showed them: suddenly I did them, and they came to pass. NIV 3 I foretold the former things long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them known; then suddenly I acted, and they came to pass. ASV 4 Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass; NIV 4 For I knew how stubborn you were; the sinews of your neck were iron, your forehead was bronze. ASV 5 therefore I have declared it to thee from of old; before it came to pass I showed it thee; lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them. NIV 5 Therefore I told you these things long ago; before they happened I announced them to you so that you could not say, 'My idols did them; my wooden image and metal god ordained them.' ASV 6 Thou hast heard it; behold all this; and ye, will ye not declare it? I have showed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, which thou hast not known. NIV 6 You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not admit them? "From now on I will tell you of new things, of hidden things unknown to you. ASV 7 They are created now, and not from of old; and before this day thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them. NIV 7 They are created now, and not long ago; you have not heard of them before today. So you cannot say, 'Yes, I knew of them.' ASV 8 Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from of old thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou didst deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb. NIV 8 You have neither heard nor understood; from of old your ear has not been open. Well do I know how treacherous you are; you were called a rebel from birth. ASV 9 For my name's sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off. NIV 9 For my own name's sake I delay my wrath; for the sake of my praise I hold it back from you, so as not to cut you off. ASV 10 Behold, I have refined thee, but not as silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. NIV 10 See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. ASV 11 For mine own sake, for mine own sake, will I do it; for how should [my name] be profaned? and my glory will I not give to another. NIV 11 For my own sake, for my own sake, I do this. How can I let myself be defamed? I will not yield my glory to another. ASV 12 Hearken unto me, O Jacob, and Israel my called: I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. NIV 12 "Listen to me, O Jacob, Israel, whom I have called: I am he; I am the first and I am the last. ASV 13 Yea, my hand hath laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand hath spread out the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together. NIV 13 My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they all stand up together. ASV 14 Assemble yourselves, all ye, and hear; who among them hath declared these things? He whom Jehovah loveth shall perform his pleasure on Babylon, and his arm [shall be on] the Chaldeans. NIV 14 "Come together, all of you, and listen: Which of [the idols] has foretold these things? The LORD's chosen ally will carry out his purpose against Babylon; his arm will be against the Babylonians. ASV 15 I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him; I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous. NIV 15 I, even I, have spoken; yes, I have called him. I will bring him, and he will succeed in his mission. ASV 16 Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; from the beginning I have not spoken in secret; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord Jehovah hath sent me, and his Spirit. NIV 16 "Come near me and listen to this: "From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret; at the time it happens, I am there." And now the Sovereign LORD has sent me, with his Spirit. ASV 17 Thus saith Jehovah, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am Jehovah thy God, who teacheth thee to profit, who leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go. NIV 17 This is what the LORD says-- your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. ASV 18 Oh that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea: NIV 18 If only you had paid attention to my commands, your peace would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the sea. ASV 19 thy seed also had been as the sand, and the offspring of thy bowels like the grains thereof: his name would not be cut off nor destroyed from before me. NIV 19 Your descendants would have been like the sand, your children like its numberless grains; their name would never be cut off nor destroyed from before me." ASV 20 Go ye forth from Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans; with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it even to the end of the earth: say ye, Jehovah hath redeemed his servant Jacob. NIV 20 Leave Babylon, flee from the Babylonians! Announce this with shouts of joy and proclaim it. Send it out to the ends of the earth; say, "The LORD has redeemed his servant Jacob." ASV 21 And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts; he caused the waters to flow out of the rock for them; he clave the rock also, and the waters gushed out. NIV 21 They did not thirst when he led them through the deserts; he made water flow for them from the rock; he split the rock and water gushed out. ASV 22 There is no peace, saith Jehovah, to the wicked. NIV 22 "There is no peace," says the LORD, "for the wicked."
