Isaiah 57

CEB 1 The righteous person perishes, and no one takes it to heart. Loyal people are gathered together, and no one understands that because of evil the righteous one passed away. NIV 1 The righteous perish, and no one ponders it in his heart; devout men are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil. CEB 2 They will find peace; those who walk in straight paths will find rest on their burial beds. NIV 2 Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death. CEB 3 Come here, you children of sorcery, offspring of adultery and prostitution! NIV 3 "But you--come here, you sons of a sorceress, you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes! CEB 4 Whom are you mocking? Against whom do you open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue? Aren't you children of rebellion, offspring of lies, NIV 4 Whom are you mocking? At whom do you sneer and stick out your tongue? Are you not a brood of rebels, the offspring of liars? CEB 5 who console yourselves with idols under every green tree, who slaughter children in the valleys, under the rocky cliffs? NIV 5 You burn with lust among the oaks and under every spreading tree; you sacrifice your children in the ravines and under the overhanging crags. CEB 6 You belong with the smooth talkers in the valley; they, they are your lot. For them you poured out a drink offering, and presented a grain offering. Should I condone these things? NIV 6 [The idols] among the smooth stones of the ravines are your portion; they, they are your lot. Yes, to them you have poured out drink offerings and offered grain offerings. In the light of these things, should I relent? CEB 7 On a very high mountain you made your bed. You went up there to offer a sacrifice. NIV 7 You have made your bed on a high and lofty hill; there you went up to offer your sacrifices. CEB 8 Behind the door and the doorpost you placed your symbols. You abandoned me and lay down, making room in your bed and making deals for yourself with them. You loved their bed; you saw their nakedness. NIV 8 Behind your doors and your doorposts you have put your pagan symbols. Forsaking me, you uncovered your bed, you climbed into it and opened it wide; you made a pact with those whose beds you love, and you looked on their nakedness. CEB 9 You went down to Molech with oil, and you slathered on your ointments; you sent your messengers far away, sent them down to the underworld. NIV 9 You went to Molech with olive oil and increased your perfumes. You sent your ambassadors far away; you descended to the grave itself ! CEB 10 Worn out by all your efforts, yet you wouldn't say, "This is useless." You found new strength; therefore, you weren't tired. NIV 10 You were wearied by all your ways, but you would not say, 'It is hopeless.' You found renewal of your strength, and so you did not faint. CEB 11 Whom did you dread and fear so that you lied, didn't remember me or give me a thought? Isn't it because I was silent and closed my eyes that you stopped fearing me? NIV 11 "Whom have you so dreaded and feared that you have been false to me, and have neither remembered me nor pondered this in your hearts? Is it not because I have long been silent that you do not fear me? CEB 12 I will bring evidence about your righteousness and your actions; they won't help you. NIV 12 I will expose your righteousness and your works, and they will not benefit you. CEB 13 When you cry out, let those things you've gathered save you! The wind will lift them all; one breath will take them away. but those taking refuge in me will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain. NIV 13 When you cry out for help, let your collection [of idols] save you! The wind will carry all of them off, a mere breath will blow them away. But the man who makes me his refuge will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain." CEB 14 It will be said: "Survey, survey; build a road! Remove barriers from my people's road!" NIV 14 And it will be said: "Build up, build up, prepare the road! Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people." CEB 15 The one who is high and lifted up, who lives forever, whose name is holy, says: I live on high, in holiness, and also with the crushed and the lowly, reviving the spirit of the lowly, reviving the heart of those who have been crushed. NIV 15 For this is what the high and lofty One says-- he who lives forever, whose name is holy: "I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite. CEB 16 I won't always accuse, nor will I be enraged forever. It is my own doing that their spirit is exhausted— I gave them breath! NIV 16 I will not accuse forever, nor will I always be angry, for then the spirit of man would grow faint before me-- the breath of man that I have created. CEB 17 I was enraged about their illegal profits; I struck them; in rage I withdrew from them. Yet they went on wandering wherever they wanted. NIV 17 I was enraged by his sinful greed; I punished him, and hid my face in anger, yet he kept on in his willful ways. CEB 18 I have seen their ways, but I will heal them. I will guide them, and reward them with comfort. And for those who mourn, NIV 18 I have seen his ways, but I will heal him; I will guide him and restore comfort to him, CEB 19 I will create reason for praise: utter prosperity to those far and near, and I will heal them, says the LORD. NIV 19 creating praise on the lips of the mourners in Israel. Peace, peace, to those far and near," says the LORD. "And I will heal them." CEB 20 But the wicked are like the churning sea that can't keep still. They churn up from their waters muck and mud. NIV 20 But the wicked are like the tossing sea, which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mire and mud. CEB 21 There is no peace, says my God, for the wicked. NIV 21 "There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked."
