Isaiah 8

CJB 1 ADONAI said to me, "Take a large tablet, and write on it in easily readable letters; 'Maher shalal, hash baz [the spoil hurries, the prey speeds along].'" NIV 1 The LORD said to me, "Take a large scroll and write on it with an ordinary pen: Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. CJB 2 I had it witnessed for me by reliable witnesses - Uriyah the cohen and Z'kharyahu the son of Y'verekhyahu. NIV 2 And I will call in Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberekiah as reliable witnesses for me." CJB 3 Then I had sexual relations with my wife; she became pregnant and gave birth to a son; and ADONAI said to me, "Name him Maher Shalal Hash Baz; NIV 3 Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and gave birth to a son. And the LORD said to me, "Name him Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. CJB 4 because before the child knows how to cry, 'Abba!' and 'Eema!', the riches of Dammesek and the spoil of Shomron will be carried off and given to the king of Ashur." NIV 4 Before the boy knows how to say 'My father' or 'My mother,' the wealth of Damascus and the plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria." CJB 5 ADONAI went on speaking and said more to me: NIV 5 The LORD spoke to me again: CJB 6 "Since this people has rejected the gently flowing waters from Shilo'ach and takes joy in Retzin and the son of Remalyah; NIV 6 "Because this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and rejoices over Rezin and the son of Remaliah, CJB 7 now Adonai will bring upon them the mighty floodwaters of the [Euphrates] River - that is, the king of Ashur and his power. It will rise above all its channels and overflow all its banks. NIV 7 therefore the Lord is about to bring against them the mighty floodwaters of the River-- the king of Assyria with all his pomp. It will overflow all its channels, run over all its banks CJB 8 It will sweep through Y'hudah, flooding everything and passing on. It will reach even up to the neck, and its outspread wings will fill the whole expanse of the land." God is with us! [Hebrew: 'immanu El] NIV 8 and sweep on into Judah, swirling over it, passing through it and reaching up to the neck. Its outspread wings will cover the breadth of your land, O Immanuel !" CJB 9 You may make an uproar, peoples; but you will be shattered. Listen, all of you from distant lands: arm yourselves, but you will be shattered; yes, arm yourselves, but you will be shattered; NIV 9 Raise the war cry, you nations, and be shattered! Listen, all you distant lands. Prepare for battle, and be shattered! Prepare for battle, and be shattered! CJB 10 devise a plan, but it will come to nothing; say anything you like, but it won't happen; because God is with us [Hebrew: 'immanu El]. NIV 10 Devise your strategy, but it will be thwarted; propose your plan, but it will not stand, for God is with us. CJB 11 For this is what ADONAI said to me, speaking with a strong hand, warning me not to live the way this people does: NIV 11 The LORD spoke to me with his strong hand upon me, warning me not to follow the way of this people. He said: CJB 12 "Don't regard as alliance what this people calls alliance, and don't fear what they fear or be awestruck by it; NIV 12 "Do not call conspiracy everything that these people call conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not dread it. CJB 13 but ADONAI-Tzva'ot - consecrate him! Let him be the object of your fear and awe! NIV 13 The LORD Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy, he is the one you are to fear, he is the one you are to dread, CJB 14 He is there to be a sanctuary. But for both the houses of Isra'el he will be a stone to stumble over, a rock obstructing their way; a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Yerushalayim. NIV 14 and he will be a sanctuary; but for both houses of Israel he will be a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be a trap and a snare. CJB 15 Many of them will stumble and fall, be broken and trapped and captured. NIV 15 Many of them will stumble; they will fall and be broken, they will be snared and captured." CJB 16 Wrap up this document, and confine its teaching to those I have instructed." NIV 16 Bind up the testimony and seal up the law among my disciples. CJB 17 I will wait for ADONAI, who is hiding his face from the house of Ya'akov; yes, I will look for him. NIV 17 I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob. I will put my trust in him. CJB 18 Meanwhile, I and the children whom ADONAI has given me will become for Isra'el signs and wonders from ADONAI-Tzva'ot living on Mount Tziyon. YESHA'YAHU (ISAIAH) 819 NIV 18 Here am I, and the children the LORD has given me. We are signs and symbols in Israel from the LORD Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion. CJB 19 So when they tell you to consult those squeaking, squawking mediums and fortune-tellers; [you are to answer], "Shouldn't a people seek their God? Must the living ask the dead NIV 19 When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? CJB 20 for teaching and instruction?" For they will indeed give you this unenlightened suggestion. NIV 20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn. CJB 21 Distressed and hungry they will pass through the land; and because of their hunger they will grow angry and curse by their king and by their God. But whether they look up [to God] NIV 21 Distressed and hungry, they will roam through the land; when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God. CJB 22 or [down] at the earth, they will see only trouble and darkness, anguished gloom and pervasive darkness. NIV 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom, and they will be thrust into utter darkness.
