James 1:17-27

CEB 17 Every good gift, every perfect gift, comes from above. These gifts come down from the Father, the creator of the heavenly lights, in whose character there is no change at all. NRS 17 Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. CEB 18 He chose to give us birth by his true word, and here is the result: we are like the first crop from the harvest of everything he created. NRS 18 In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures. CEB 19 Know this, my dear brothers and sisters: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to grow angry. NRS 19 You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; CEB 20 This is because an angry person doesn't produce God's righteousness. NRS 20 for your anger does not produce God's righteousness. CEB 21 Therefore, with humility, set aside all moral filth and the growth of wickedness, and welcome the word planted deep inside you—the very word that is able to save you. NRS 21 Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. CEB 22 You must be doers of the word and not only hearers who mislead themselves. NRS 22 But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. CEB 23 Those who hear but don't do the word are like those who look at their faces in a mirror. NRS 23 For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; CEB 24 They look at themselves, walk away, and immediately forget what they were like. NRS 24 for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. CEB 25 But there are those who study the perfect law, the law of freedom, and continue to do it. They don't listen and then forget, but they put it into practice in their lives. They will be blessed in whatever they do. NRS 25 But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing. CEB 26 If those who claim devotion to God don't control what they say, they mislead themselves. Their devotion is worthless. NRS 26 If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. CEB 27 True devotion, the kind that is pure and faultless before God the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their difficulties and to keep the world from contaminating us. NRS 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
