James 1:19-27

NRS 19 You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; NIV 19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, NRS 20 for your anger does not produce God's righteousness. NIV 20 for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. NRS 21 Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. NIV 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. NRS 22 But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. NIV 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. NRS 23 For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; NIV 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror NRS 24 for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. NIV 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. NRS 25 But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing. NIV 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does. NRS 26 If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. NIV 26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. NRS 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world. NIV 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
