James 1:19-27

RSV 19 Know this, my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger, NIV 19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, RSV 20 for the anger of man does not work the righteousness of God. NIV 20 for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. RSV 21 Therefore put away all filthiness and rank growth of wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. NIV 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. RSV 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. NIV 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. RSV 23 For if any one is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who observes his natural face in a mirror; NIV 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror RSV 24 for he observes himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. NIV 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. RSV 25 But he who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer that forgets but a doer that acts, he shall be blessed in his doing. NIV 25 But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does. RSV 26 If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this man's religion is vain. NIV 26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. RSV 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. NIV 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
