James 5:7-20

ESV 7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. NIV 7 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. ESV 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. NIV 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near. ESV 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. NIV 9 Don't grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! ESV 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. NIV 10 Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. ESV 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. NIV 11 As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. ESV 12 But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your "yes" be yes and your "no" be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. NIV 12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear--not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your "Yes" be yes, and your "No," no, or you will be condemned. ESV 13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. NIV 13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. ESV 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. NIV 14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. ESV 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. NIV 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. ESV 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. NIV 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. ESV 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. NIV 17 Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. ESV 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. NIV 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. ESV 19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, NIV 19 My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, ESV 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. NIV 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
