Jeremiah 10

CSB 1 Hear the word that the Lord has spoken to you, house of Israel. NIV 1 Hear what the LORD says to you, O house of Israel. CSB 2 This is what the Lord says: Do not learn the way of the nations or be terrified by signs in the heavens, although the nations are terrified by them, NIV 2 This is what the LORD says: "Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the sky, though the nations are terrified by them. CSB 3 for the customs of the peoples are worthless. Someone cuts down a tree from the forest; [it is] worked by the hands of a craftsman with a chisel. NIV 3 For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. CSB 4 He decorates it with silver and gold. It is fastened with hammer and nails, so it won't totter. NIV 4 They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. CSB 5 Like scarecrows in a cucumber patch, their idols cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them for they can do no harm- and they cannot do any good. NIV 5 Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good." CSB 6 Lord, there is no one like You. You are great; Your name is great in power. NIV 6 No one is like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power. CSB 7 Who should not fear You, King of the nations? It is what You deserve. For among all the wise people of the nations and among all their kingdoms, there is no one like You. NIV 7 Who should not revere you, O King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you. CSB 8 They are both senseless and foolish, instructed by worthless idols [made of] wood! NIV 8 They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols. CSB 9 Beaten silver is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz from the hands of a goldsmith, the work of a craftsman. Their clothing is blue and purple, all the work of skilled artisans. NIV 9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple-- all made by skilled workers. CSB 10 But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and eternal King. The earth quakes at His wrath, and the nations cannot endure His rage. NIV 10 But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath. CSB 11 You are to say this to them: The gods that did not make the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth and from under these heavens. NIV 11 "Tell them this: 'These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.' " CSB 12 He made the earth by His power, established the world by His wisdom, and spread out the heavens by His understanding. NIV 12 But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. CSB 13 When He thunders, the waters in the heavens are in turmoil, and He causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain and brings the wind from His storehouses. NIV 13 When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses. CSB 14 Everyone is stupid and ignorant. Every goldsmith is put to shame by [his] carved image, for his cast images are a lie; there is no breath in them. NIV 14 Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. His images are a fraud; they have no breath in them. CSB 15 They are worthless, a work to be mocked. At the time of their punishment they will be destroyed. NIV 15 They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish. CSB 16 Jacob's Portion is not like these because He is the One who formed all things. Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; the Lord of Hosts is His name. NIV 16 He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the tribe of his inheritance-- the LORD Almighty is his name. CSB 17 Gather up your belongings from the ground, you who live under siege. NIV 17 Gather up your belongings to leave the land, you who live under siege. CSB 18 For this is what the Lord says: Look, I am slinging out the land's residents at this time and bringing them such distress that they will feel it. NIV 18 For this is what the LORD says: "At this time I will hurl out those who live in this land; I will bring distress on them so that they may be captured." CSB 19 Woe to me because of my brokenness- I am severely wounded! I exclaimed, "This is my intense suffering, but I must bear it." NIV 19 Woe to me because of my injury! My wound is incurable! Yet I said to myself, "This is my sickness, and I must endure it." CSB 20 My tent is destroyed; all my tent cords are snapped. My sons have departed from me and are no more. [I have] no one to pitch my tent again or to hang up my curtains. NIV 20 My tent is destroyed; all its ropes are snapped. My sons are gone from me and are no more; no one is left now to pitch my tent or to set up my shelter. CSB 21 For the shepherds are stupid: they don't seek the Lord. Therefore they have not prospered, and their whole flock is scattered. NIV 21 The shepherds are senseless and do not inquire of the LORD; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered. CSB 22 Listen! A noise-it is coming- a great commotion from the land to the north. The cities of Judah will be made desolate, a jackals' den. NIV 22 Listen! The report is coming-- a great commotion from the land of the north! It will make the towns of Judah desolate, a haunt of jackals. CSB 23 I know, Lord, that a man's way of life is not his own; no one who walks determines his own steps. NIV 23 I know, O LORD, that a man's life is not his own; it is not for man to direct his steps. CSB 24 Discipline me, Lord, but with justice- not in Your anger, or You will reduce me to nothing. NIV 24 Correct me, LORD, but only with justice-- not in your anger, lest you reduce me to nothing. CSB 25 Pour out Your wrath on the nations that don't recognize You and on the families that don't call on Your name, for they have consumed Jacob; they have consumed him and finished him off and made his homeland desolate. NIV 25 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the peoples who do not call on your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him completely and destroyed his homeland.
