Jeremiah 13:18-27

RSV 18 Say to the king and the queen mother: "Take a lowly seat, for your beautiful crown has come down from your head." NIV 18 Say to the king and to the queen mother, "Come down from your thrones, for your glorious crowns will fall from your heads." RSV 19 The cities of the Negeb are shut up, with none to open them; all Judah is taken into exile, wholly taken into exile. NIV 19 The cities in the Negev will be shut up, and there will be no one to open them. All Judah will be carried into exile, carried completely away. RSV 20 "Lift up your eyes and see those who come from the north. Where is the flock that was given you, your beautiful flock? NIV 20 Lift up your eyes and see those who are coming from the north. Where is the flock that was entrusted to you, the sheep of which you boasted? RSV 21 What will you say when they set as head over you those whom you yourself have taught to be friends to you? Will not pangs take hold of you, like those of a woman in travail? NIV 21 What will you say when [the LORD] sets over you those you cultivated as your special allies? Will not pain grip you like that of a woman in labor? RSV 22 And if you say in your heart, 'Why have these things come upon me?' it is for the greatness of your iniquity that your skirts are lifted up, and you suffer violence. NIV 22 And if you ask yourself, "Why has this happened to me?"-- it is because of your many sins that your skirts have been torn off and your body mistreated. RSV 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then also you can do good who are accustomed to do evil. NIV 23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil. RSV 24 I will scatter you like chaff driven by the wind from the desert. NIV 24 "I will scatter you like chaff driven by the desert wind. RSV 25 This is your lot, the portion I have measured out to you, says the LORD, because you have forgotten me and trusted in lies. NIV 25 This is your lot, the portion I have decreed for you," declares the LORD, "because you have forgotten me and trusted in false gods. RSV 26 I myself will lift up your skirts over your face, and your shame will be seen. NIV 26 I will pull up your skirts over your face that your shame may be seen-- RSV 27 I have seen your abominations, your adulteries and neighings, your lewd harlotries, on the hills in the field. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! How long will it be before you are made clean?" NIV 27 your adulteries and lustful neighings, your shameless prostitution! I have seen your detestable acts on the hills and in the fields. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! How long will you be unclean?"
