Jeremiah 2

NCV 1 The Lord spoke his word to me, saying: NIV 1 The word of the LORD came to me: NCV 2 "Go and speak to the people of Jerusalem, saying: This is what the Lord says: 'I remember how faithful you were to me when you were a young nation. You loved me like a young bride. You followed me through the desert, a land that had never been planted. NIV 2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem: " 'I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the desert, through a land not sown. NCV 3 The people of Israel were holy to the Lord, like the first fruits from his harvest. Those who tried to hurt Israel were judged guilty. Disasters struck them,'" says the Lord. NIV 3 Israel was holy to the LORD, the firstfruits of his harvest; all who devoured her were held guilty, and disaster overtook them,' " declares the LORD. NCV 4 Hear the word of the Lord, family of Jacob, all you family groups of Israel. NIV 4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, all you clans of the house of Israel. NCV 5 This is what the Lord says: "I was fair to your ancestors, so why did they turn away from me? Your ancestors worshiped useless idols and became useless themselves. NIV 5 This is what the LORD says: "What fault did your fathers find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves. NCV 6 Your ancestors didn't say, 'Where is the Lord who brought us out of Egypt? He led us through the desert, through a dry and rocky land, through a dark and dangerous land. He led us where no one travels or lives.' NIV 6 They did not ask, 'Where is the LORD, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness, through a land of deserts and rifts, a land of drought and darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives?' NCV 7 I brought you into a fertile land so you could eat its fruit and produce. But you came and made my land unclean; you made it a hateful place. NIV 7 I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable. NCV 8 The priests didn't ask, 'Where is the Lord?' The people who know the teachings didn't know me. The leaders turned against me. and worshiped useless idols. NIV 8 The priests did not ask, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols. NCV 9 "So now I will again tell what I have against you," says the Lord. "And I will tell what I have against your grandchildren. NIV 9 "Therefore I bring charges against you again," declares the LORD. "And I will bring charges against your children's children. NCV 10 Go across the sea to the island of Cyprus and see. Send someone to the land of Kedar to look closely. See if there has ever been anything like this. NIV 10 Cross over to the coasts of Kittim and look, send to Kedar and observe closely; see if there has ever been anything like this: NCV 11 Has a nation ever exchanged its gods? (Of course, its gods are not really gods at all.) for idols worth nothing. NIV 11 Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols. NCV 12 Skies, be shocked at the things that have happened and shake with great fear!" says the Lord. NIV 12 Be appalled at this, O heavens, and shudder with great horror," declares the LORD. NCV 13 "My people have done two evils: They have turned away from me, the spring of living water. And they have dug their own wells, which are broken wells that cannot hold water. NIV 13 "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. NCV 14 Have the people of Israel become slaves? Have they become like someone who was born a slave? Why were they taken captive? NIV 14 Is Israel a servant, a slave by birth? Why then has he become plunder? NCV 15 Enemies have roared like lions at Israel; they have growled at Israel. They have destroyed the land of Israel. The cities of Israel lie in ruins, and all the people have left. NIV 15 Lions have roared; they have growled at him. They have laid waste his land; his towns are burned and deserted. NCV 16 The men from the cities of Memphis and Tahpanhes have disgraced you by shaving the top of your head. NIV 16 Also, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have shaved the crown of your head. NCV 17 Haven't you brought this on yourselves by turning away from the Lord your God when he was leading you in the right way? NIV 17 Have you not brought this on yourselves by forsaking the LORD your God when he led you in the way? NCV 18 It did not help to go to Egypt and drink from the Shihor River. and drink from the Euphrates River. NIV 18 Now why go to Egypt to drink water from the Shihor ? And why go to Assyria to drink water from the River ? NCV 19 Your evil will bring punishment to you, and the wrong you have done will teach you a lesson. Think about it and understand that it is a terrible evil to turn away from the Lord your God. It is wrong not to fear me," says the Lord God All-Powerful. NIV 19 Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the LORD your God and have no awe of me," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. NCV 20 "Long ago you refused to obey me as an ox breaks its yoke. You broke the ropes I used to hold you and said, 'I will not serve you!' In fact, on every high hill and under every green tree you lay down as a prostitute. NIV 20 "Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your bonds; you said, 'I will not serve you!' Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute. NCV 21 But I planted you as a special vine, as a very good seed. How then did you turn into a wild vine that grows bad fruit? NIV 21 I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine? NCV 22 Although you wash yourself with cleanser and use much soap, I can still see the stain of your guilt," says the Lord God. NIV 22 Although you wash yourself with soda and use an abundance of soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me," declares the Sovereign LORD. NCV 23 "How can you say to me, 'I am not guilty. Look at the things you did in the valley. Think about what you have done. You are like a she-camel in mating season that runs from place to place. NIV 23 "How can you say, 'I am not defiled; I have not run after the Baals'? See how you behaved in the valley; consider what you have done. You are a swift she-camel running here and there, NCV 24 You are like a wild donkey that lives in the desert and sniffs the wind at mating time. At that time who can hold her back? Any male who chases her will easily catch her; at mating time, it is easy to find her. NIV 24 a wild donkey accustomed to the desert, sniffing the wind in her craving-- in her heat who can restrain her? Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves; at mating time they will find her. NCV 25 Don't run until your feet are bare or until your throat is dry. But you say, 'It's no use! I love those other gods, and I must chase them!' NIV 25 Do not run until your feet are bare and your throat is dry. But you said, 'It's no use! I love foreign gods, and I must go after them.' NCV 26 "A thief is ashamed when someone catches him stealing. In the same way, the family of Israel is ashamed -- they, their kings, their officers, their priests, and their prophets. NIV 26 "As a thief is disgraced when he is caught, so the house of Israel is disgraced-- they, their kings and their officials, their priests and their prophets. NCV 27 They say to things of wood, 'You are my father,' and to idols of stone, 'You gave birth to me.' Those people won't look at me; they have turned their backs to me. But when they get into trouble, they say, 'Come and save us!' NIV 27 They say to wood, 'You are my father,' and to stone, 'You gave me birth.' They have turned their backs to me and not their faces; yet when they are in trouble, they say, 'Come and save us!' NCV 28 Where are the idols you made for yourselves? Let them come and save you when you are in trouble! People of Judah, you have as many idols as you have towns! NIV 28 Where then are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble! For you have as many gods as you have towns, O Judah. NCV 29 "Why do you complain to me? All of you have turned against me," says the Lord. NIV 29 "Why do you bring charges against me? You have all rebelled against me," declares the LORD. NCV 30 "I punished your people, but it did not help. They didn't come back when they were punished. With your swords you killed your prophets like a hungry lion. NIV 30 "In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravening lion. NCV 31 "People of Judah, pay attention to the word of the Lord: or like a dark and dangerous land? Why do my people say, 'We are free to wander. We won't come to you anymore'? NIV 31 "You of this generation, consider the word of the LORD: "Have I been a desert to Israel or a land of great darkness? Why do my people say, 'We are free to roam; we will come to you no more'? NCV 32 A young woman does not forget her jewelry, and a bride does not forget the decorations for her dress. But my people have forgotten me for more days than can be counted. NIV 32 Does a maiden forget her jewelry, a bride her wedding ornaments? Yet my people have forgotten me, days without number. NCV 33 You really know how to chase after love. Even the worst women can learn evil ways from you. NIV 33 How skilled you are at pursuing love! Even the worst of women can learn from your ways. NCV 34 Even on your clothes you have the blood of poor and innocent people, but they weren't thieves you caught breaking in. You do all these things, NIV 34 On your clothes men find the lifeblood of the innocent poor, though you did not catch them breaking in. Yet in spite of all this NCV 35 but you say, 'I am innocent. God is not angry with me.' But I will judge you guilty of lying, because you say, 'I have not sinned.' NIV 35 you say, 'I am innocent; he is not angry with me.' But I will pass judgment on you because you say, 'I have not sinned.' NCV 36 It is so easy for you to change your mind. Even Egypt will let you down, as Assyria let you down. NIV 36 Why do you go about so much, changing your ways? You will be disappointed by Egypt as you were by Assyria. NCV 37 You will eventually leave that place with your hands on your head, like captives. You trusted those countries, but you will not be helped by them, because the Lord has rejected them. NIV 37 You will also leave that place with your hands on your head, for the LORD has rejected those you trust; you will not be helped by them.
