Jeremiah 2

RHE 1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying: NIV 1 The word of the LORD came to me: RHE 2 Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying: Thus saith the Lord: I have remembered thee, pitying thy youth, and the love of thy espousals, when thou followedst me in the desert, in a land that is not sown. NIV 2 "Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem: " 'I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the desert, through a land not sown. RHE 3 Israel is holy to the Lord, the firstfruits of his increase: all they that devour him offend: evils shall come upon them, saith the Lord. NIV 3 Israel was holy to the LORD, the firstfruits of his harvest; all who devoured her were held guilty, and disaster overtook them,' " declares the LORD. RHE 4 Hear ye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all ye families of the house of Israel: NIV 4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, all you clans of the house of Israel. RHE 5 Thus saith the Lord: What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain? NIV 5 This is what the LORD says: "What fault did your fathers find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves. RHE 6 And they have not said: Where is the Lord, that made us come up out of the land of Egypt? that led us through the desert, through a land uninhabited and unpassable, through a land of drought, and the image of death, through a land wherein no man walked, nor any man dwelt? NIV 6 They did not ask, 'Where is the LORD, who brought us up out of Egypt and led us through the barren wilderness, through a land of deserts and rifts, a land of drought and darkness, a land where no one travels and no one lives?' RHE 7 And I brought you into the land of Carmel, to eat the fruit thereof, and the best things thereof: and when ye entered in, you defiled my land and made my inheritance an abomination. NIV 7 I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable. RHE 8 The priests did not say: Where is the Lord? and they that held the law knew me not, and the pastors transgressed against me: and the prophets prophesied in Baal, and followed idols. NIV 8 The priests did not ask, 'Where is the LORD?' Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols. RHE 9 Therefore will I yet contend in judgment with you, saith the Lord, and I will plead with your children. NIV 9 "Therefore I bring charges against you again," declares the LORD. "And I will bring charges against your children's children. RHE 10 Pass over to the isles of Cethim, and see: and send into Cedar, and consider diligently: and see if there hath been done any thing like this. NIV 10 Cross over to the coasts of Kittim and look, send to Kedar and observe closely; see if there has ever been anything like this: RHE 11 If a nation hath changed their gods, and indeed they are not gods: but my people have changed their glory into an idol. NIV 11 Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols. RHE 12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and ye gates thereof, be very desolate, saith the Lord. NIV 12 Be appalled at this, O heavens, and shudder with great horror," declares the LORD. RHE 13 For my people have done two evils. They have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and have digged to themselves cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. NIV 13 "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water. RHE 14 Is Israel a bondman, or a homeborn slave? why then is he become a prey? NIV 14 Is Israel a servant, a slave by birth? Why then has he become plunder? RHE 15 The lions have roared upon him, and have made a noise, they have made his land a wilderness: his cities are burnt down, and there is none to dwell in them. NIV 15 Lions have roared; they have growled at him. They have laid waste his land; his towns are burned and deserted. RHE 16 The children also of Memphis, and of Taphnes have defloured thee, even to the crown of the head. NIV 16 Also, the men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have shaved the crown of your head. RHE 17 Hath not this been done to thee, because thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God at that time, when he led thee by the way? NIV 17 Have you not brought this on yourselves by forsaking the LORD your God when he led you in the way? RHE 18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the troubled water? And what hast thou to do with the way of the Assyrians, to drink the water of the river? NIV 18 Now why go to Egypt to drink water from the Shihor ? And why go to Assyria to drink water from the River ? RHE 19 Thy own wickedness shall reprove thee, and thy apostasy shall rebuke thee. Know thou, and see that it is an evil and a bitter thing for thee, to have left the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not with thee, saith the Lord the God of hosts. NIV 19 Your wickedness will punish you; your backsliding will rebuke you. Consider then and realize how evil and bitter it is for you when you forsake the LORD your God and have no awe of me," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. RHE 20 Of old time thou hast broken my yoke, thou hast burst my bands, and thou saidst: I will not serve. For on every high hill, and under every green tree thou didst prostitute thyself. NIV 20 "Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your bonds; you said, 'I will not serve you!' Indeed, on every high hill and under every spreading tree you lay down as a prostitute. RHE 21 Yet, I planted thee a chosen vineyard, all true seed: how then art thou turned unto me into that which is good for nothing, O strange vineyard? NIV 21 I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine? RHE 22 Though thou wash thyself with nitre, and multiply to thyself the herb borith, thou art stained in thy iniquity before me, saith the Lord God. NIV 22 Although you wash yourself with soda and use an abundance of soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me," declares the Sovereign LORD. RHE 23 How canst thou say: I am not polluted, I have not walked after Baalim? see thy ways in the valley, know what thou hast done: as a swift runner pursuing his course. NIV 23 "How can you say, 'I am not defiled; I have not run after the Baals'? See how you behaved in the valley; consider what you have done. You are a swift she-camel running here and there, RHE 24 A wild ass accustomed to the wilderness in the desire of his heart, snuffed up the wind of his love: none shall turn her away: all that seek her shall not fail: in her monthly filth they shall find her. NIV 24 a wild donkey accustomed to the desert, sniffing the wind in her craving-- in her heat who can restrain her? Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves; at mating time they will find her. RHE 25 Keep thy foot from being bare, and thy throat from thirst. But thou saidst: I have lost all hope, I will not do it: for I have loved strangers, and I will walk after them. NIV 25 Do not run until your feet are bare and your throat is dry. But you said, 'It's no use! I love foreign gods, and I must go after them.' RHE 26 As the thief is confounded when he is taken, so is the house of Israel confounded, they and their kings, their princes and their priests, and their prophets. NIV 26 "As a thief is disgraced when he is caught, so the house of Israel is disgraced-- they, their kings and their officials, their priests and their prophets. RHE 27 Saying to a stock: Thou art my father: and to a stone: Thou hast begotten me: they have turned their back to me, and not their face: and in the time of their affliction they will say: Arise, and deliver us. NIV 27 They say to wood, 'You are my father,' and to stone, 'You gave me birth.' They have turned their backs to me and not their faces; yet when they are in trouble, they say, 'Come and save us!' RHE 28 Where are the gods, whom thou hast made thee? let them arise and deliver thee in the time of thy affliction: for according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Juda. NIV 28 Where then are the gods you made for yourselves? Let them come if they can save you when you are in trouble! For you have as many gods as you have towns, O Judah. RHE 29 Why will you contend with me in judgment? you have all forsaken me, saith the Lord. NIV 29 "Why do you bring charges against me? You have all rebelled against me," declares the LORD. RHE 30 In vain have I struck your children, they have not received correction: your sword hath devoured your prophets, your generation is like a ravaging lion. NIV 30 "In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction. Your sword has devoured your prophets like a ravening lion. RHE 31 See ye the word of the Lord: Am I become a wilderness to Israel, or a lateward springing land? why then have my people said: We are revolted, we will come to thee no more? NIV 31 "You of this generation, consider the word of the LORD: "Have I been a desert to Israel or a land of great darkness? Why do my people say, 'We are free to roam; we will come to you no more'? RHE 32 Will a virgin forget her ornament, or a bride her stomacher? but my people hath forgotten me days without number. NIV 32 Does a maiden forget her jewelry, a bride her wedding ornaments? Yet my people have forgotten me, days without number. RHE 33 Why dost thou endeavour to shew thy way good to seek my love, thou who hast also taught thy malices to be thy ways, NIV 33 How skilled you are at pursuing love! Even the worst of women can learn from your ways. RHE 34 And in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor and innocent? not in ditches have I found them, but in all places, which I mentioned before. NIV 34 On your clothes men find the lifeblood of the innocent poor, though you did not catch them breaking in. Yet in spite of all this RHE 35 And thou hast said: I am without sin and am innocent: and therefore let thy anger be turned away from me. Behold, I will contend with thee in judgment, because thou hast said: I have not sinned. NIV 35 you say, 'I am innocent; he is not angry with me.' But I will pass judgment on you because you say, 'I have not sinned.' RHE 36 How exceeding base art thou become, going the same ways over again! and thou shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria. NIV 36 Why do you go about so much, changing your ways? You will be disappointed by Egypt as you were by Assyria. RHE 37 For from thence thou shalt go, and thy hand shall be upon thy head: for the Lord hath destroyed thy trust, and thou shalt have nothing prosperous therein. NIV 37 You will also leave that place with your hands on your head, for the LORD has rejected those you trust; you will not be helped by them.
