Jeremiah 22

CJB 1 ADONAI said, "Go down to the house of the king of Y'hudah and there speak this word: NIV 1 This is what the LORD says: "Go down to the palace of the king of Judah and proclaim this message there: CJB 2 'King of Y'hudah occupying David's throne, hear the word of ADONAI - you, your servants and your people who enter through these gates. NIV 2 'Hear the word of the LORD, O king of Judah, you who sit on David's throne--you, your officials and your people who come through these gates. CJB 3 This is what ADONAI says: "Do what is right and just; rescue the wronged from their oppressors; do nothing wrong or violent to the stranger, orphan or widow; don't shed innocent blood in this place. NIV 3 This is what the LORD says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of his oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the alien, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place. CJB 4 "'"If you are careful to do this, then future kings occupying David's throne will enter these palace gates riding in chariots and on horses - he, his servants and his people. NIV 4 For if you are careful to carry out these commands, then kings who sit on David's throne will come through the gates of this palace, riding in chariots and on horses, accompanied by their officials and their people. CJB 5 But if you will not pay attention to these words, then I swear by myself," says ADONAI, "that this palace will become a ruin."' NIV 5 But if you do not obey these commands, declares the LORD, I swear by myself that this palace will become a ruin.' " CJB 6 "For here is what ADONAI says concerning the palace of the king of Y'hudah: 'You are like Gil'ad to me, like the peak of the L'vanon; yet I will turn you into a desert, uninhabited cities. NIV 6 For this is what the LORD says about the palace of the king of Judah: "Though you are like Gilead to me, like the summit of Lebanon, I will surely make you like a desert, like towns not inhabited. CJB 7 I will designate men to destroy you, each one with his weapons; they will chop down your choice cedars and throw them in the fire.' NIV 7 I will send destroyers against you, each man with his weapons, and they will cut up your fine cedar beams and throw them into the fire. CJB 8 "Many nations will pass by this city, and they will say to one another, 'Why has ADONAI done such a thing to this great city?' NIV 8 "People from many nations will pass by this city and will ask one another, 'Why has the LORD done such a thing to this great city?' CJB 9 The answer will be, 'Because they abandoned the covenant of ADONAI their God and worshipped other gods, serving them.'" NIV 9 And the answer will be: 'Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD their God and have worshiped and served other gods.' " CJB 10 Do not weep for [the king] who has died, do not mourn for him [Yoshiyahu]. But weep for him who departs [to Egypt], for he will never return or see his native land again. NIV 10 Do not weep for the dead [king ] or mourn his loss; rather, weep bitterly for him who is exiled, because he will never return nor see his native land again. CJB 11 For this is what ADONAI says about Shalum the son of Yoshiyahu, king of Y'hudah, who succeeded Yoshiyahu his father as king: "He has left this place, never to return; NIV 11 For this is what the LORD says about Shallum son of Josiah, who succeeded his father as king of Judah but has gone from this place: "He will never return. CJB 12 but he will die in the place where they have led him captive, without seeing this land again. NIV 12 He will die in the place where they have led him captive; he will not see this land again." CJB 13 "Woe to him who builds his palace unfairly, its upper rooms by injustice; who makes his neighbor work for free and will not give him his wages; NIV 13 "Woe to him who builds his palace by unrighteousness, his upper rooms by injustice, making his countrymen work for nothing, not paying them for their labor. CJB 14 who says, 'I will build me a spacious palace with airy upper rooms,' then makes windows and cedar panels painted with vermilion! NIV 14 He says, 'I will build myself a great palace with spacious upper rooms.' So he makes large windows in it, panels it with cedar and decorates it in red. CJB 15 Your cedar may be excellent, but that doesn't make you a better king. True, your father ate and drank, but he also did what was right and just, so things went well with him. NIV 15 "Does it make you a king to have more and more cedar? Did not your father have food and drink? He did what was right and just, so all went well with him. CJB 16 He upheld the cause of the poor and the weak, so everything went well. Isn't that what knowing me is all about?" says ADONAI. NIV 16 He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?" declares the LORD. CJB 17 "In contrast, your eyes and heart are controlled entirely by your greed, your desire for shedding innocent blood, oppressing and extorting." NIV 17 "But your eyes and your heart are set only on dishonest gain, on shedding innocent blood and on oppression and extortion." CJB 18 Therefore here is what ADONAI says concerning Y'hoyakim the son of Yoshiyahu, king of Y'hudah: "There will be no one to mourn for him, 'Oh! My brother!' or 'Oh! My sister!' There will be no one to mourn for him, 'Oh! My master!' or 'Oh! His glory!' NIV 18 Therefore this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: "They will not mourn for him: 'Alas, my brother! Alas, my sister!' They will not mourn for him: 'Alas, my master! Alas, his splendor!' CJB 19 He will be given a donkey's 'burial' - dragged out the gates of Yerushalayim and thrown away [to rot]. NIV 19 He will have the burial of a donkey-- dragged away and thrown outside the gates of Jerusalem." CJB 20 Climb up to the L'vanon and cry out, raise your voice in Bashan, cry out from 'Avarim, for all your lovers are broken. NIV 20 "Go up to Lebanon and cry out, let your voice be heard in Bashan, cry out from Abarim, for all your allies are crushed. CJB 21 I spoke to you in your times of prosperity, but you said, 'I won't listen.' This has been your pattern since you were young - you pay no attention to what I say. NIV 21 I warned you when you felt secure, but you said, 'I will not listen!' This has been your way from your youth; you have not obeyed me. CJB 22 The wind will shepherd all your shepherds away, and your lovers will go into captivity. Then you will be ashamed and disgraced for all your wicked deeds. NIV 22 The wind will drive all your shepherds away, and your allies will go into exile. Then you will be ashamed and disgraced because of all your wickedness. CJB 23 You who live in the L'vanon, nesting in the cedars, how gracious will you be when pains come on you like a woman in labor? NIV 23 You who live in 'Lebanon,' who are nestled in cedar buildings, how you will groan when pangs come upon you, pain like that of a woman in labor! CJB 24 "As I live," says ADONAI, "even if Koniyahu the son of Y'hoyakim king of Y'hudah were the signet ring on my right hand, I would pull you off NIV 24 "As surely as I live," declares the LORD, "even if you, Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, were a signet ring on my right hand, I would still pull you off. CJB 25 and hand you over to those who seek your life, to those you fear, N'vukhadretzar king of Bavel and the Kasdim. NIV 25 I will hand you over to those who seek your life, those you fear--to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and to the Babylonians. CJB 26 I will hurl you and the mother who gave birth to you into a country different from the one you were born in, and you will die there. NIV 26 I will hurl you and the mother who gave you birth into another country, where neither of you was born, and there you both will die. CJB 27 They will not return to the country to which they long to return." NIV 27 You will never come back to the land you long to return to." CJB 28 Is this man Koniyahu a despised, broken pot, an instrument nobody wants? Why are they being thrown out? Why are he and his offspring thrown out into a country they do not know? NIV 28 Is this man Jehoiachin a despised, broken pot, an object no one wants? Why will he and his children be hurled out, cast into a land they do not know? CJB 29 Oh, land, land, land! Hear the word of ADONAI! NIV 29 O land, land, land, hear the word of the LORD! CJB 30 This what ADONAI says: "List this man as childless; he is a lifetime failure - none of his offspring will succeed, none will sit on David's throne or rule again in Y'hudah." NIV 30 This is what the LORD says: "Record this man as if childless, a man who will not prosper in his lifetime, for none of his offspring will prosper, none will sit on the throne of David or rule anymore in Judah."
