Jeremiah 23:13-40

NRS 13 In the prophets of Samaria I saw a disgusting thing: they prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray. NIV 13 "Among the prophets of Samaria I saw this repulsive thing: They prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray. NRS 14 But in the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen a more shocking thing: they commit adultery and walk in lies; they strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from wickedness; all of them have become like Sodom to me, and its inhabitants like Gomorrah NIV 14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah." NRS 15 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets: "I am going to make them eat wormwood, and give them poisoned water to drink; for from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land." NIV 15 Therefore, this is what the LORD Almighty says concerning the prophets: "I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned water, because from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land." NRS 16 Thus says the Lord of hosts: Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you; they are deluding you. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. NIV 16 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you; they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD. NRS 17 They keep saying to those who despise the word of the Lord, "It shall be well with you"; and to all who stubbornly follow their own stubborn hearts, they say, "No calamity shall come upon you." NIV 17 They keep saying to those who despise me, 'The LORD says: You will have peace.' And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts they say, 'No harm will come to you.' NRS 18 For who has stood in the council of the Lord so as to see and to hear his word? Who has given heed to his word so as to proclaim it? NIV 18 But which of them has stood in the council of the LORD to see or to hear his word? Who has listened and heard his word? NRS 19 Look, the storm of the Lord! Wrath has gone forth, a whirling tempest; it will burst upon the head of the wicked NIV 19 See, the storm of the LORD will burst out in wrath, a whirlwind swirling down on the heads of the wicked NRS 20 The anger of the Lord will not turn back until he has executed and accomplished the intents of his mind. In the latter days you will understand it clearly. NIV 20 The anger of the LORD will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of his heart. In days to come you will understand it clearly. NRS 21 I did not send the prophets, yet they ran; I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied NIV 21 I did not send these prophets, yet they have run with their message; I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied NRS 22 But if they had stood in my council, then they would have proclaimed my words to my people, and they would have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings. NIV 22 But if they had stood in my council, they would have proclaimed my words to my people and would have turned them from their evil ways and from their evil deeds. NRS 23 Am I a God near by, says the Lord, and not a God far off? NIV 23 "Am I only a God nearby," declares the LORD, "and not a God far away? NRS 24 Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? says the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord. NIV 24 Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?" declares the LORD. "Do not I fill heaven and earth?" declares the LORD. NRS 25 I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, "I have dreamed, I have dreamed!" NIV 25 "I have heard what the prophets say who prophesy lies in my name. They say, 'I had a dream! I had a dream!' NRS 26 How long? Will the hearts of the prophets ever turn back—those who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart? NIV 26 How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds? NRS 27 They plan to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, just as their ancestors forgot my name for Baal. NIV 27 They think the dreams they tell one another will make my people forget my name, just as their fathers forgot my name through Baal worship. NRS 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let the one who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? says the Lord. NIV 28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell his dream, but let the one who has my word speak it faithfully. For what has straw to do with grain?" declares the LORD. NRS 29 Is not my word like fire, says the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces? NIV 29 "Is not my word like fire," declares the LORD, "and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces? NRS 30 See, therefore, I am against the prophets, says the Lord, who steal my words from one another. NIV 30 "Therefore," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets who steal from one another words supposedly from me. NRS 31 See, I am against the prophets, says the Lord, who use their own tongues and say, "Says the Lord." NIV 31 Yes," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, 'The LORD declares.' NRS 32 See, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, says the Lord, and who tell them, and who lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when I did not send them or appoint them; so they do not profit this people at all, says the Lord. NIV 32 Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams," declares the LORD. "They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not send or appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least," declares the LORD. NRS 33 When this people, or a prophet, or a priest asks you, "What is the burden of the Lord?" you shall say to them, "You are the burden, and I will cast you off, says the Lord." NIV 33 "When these people, or a prophet or a priest, ask you, 'What is the oracle of the LORD?' say to them, 'What oracle? I will forsake you, declares the LORD.' NRS 34 And as for the prophet, priest, or the people who say, "The burden of the Lord," I will punish them and their households. NIV 34 If a prophet or a priest or anyone else claims, 'This is the oracle of the LORD,' I will punish that man and his household. NRS 35 Thus shall you say to one another, among yourselves, "What has the Lord answered?" or "What has the Lord spoken?" NIV 35 This is what each of you keeps on saying to his friend or relative: 'What is the LORD's answer?' or 'What has the LORD spoken?' NRS 36 But "the burden of the Lord" you shall mention no more, for the burden is everyone's own word, and so you pervert the words of the living God, the Lord of hosts, our God NIV 36 But you must not mention 'the oracle of the LORD' again, because every man's own word becomes his oracle and so you distort the words of the living God, the LORD Almighty, our God NRS 37 Thus you shall ask the prophet, "What has the Lord answered you?" or "What has the Lord spoken?" NIV 37 This is what you keep saying to a prophet: 'What is the LORD's answer to you?' or 'What has the LORD spoken?' NRS 38 But if you say, "the burden of the Lord," thus says the Lord: Because you have said these words, "the burden of the Lord," when I sent to you, saying, You shall not say, "the burden of the Lord, NIV 38 Although you claim, 'This is the oracle of the LORD,' this is what the LORD says: You used the words, 'This is the oracle of the LORD,' even though I told you that you must not claim, 'This is the oracle of the LORD. NRS 39 therefore, I will surely lift you up and cast you away from my presence, you and the city that I gave to you and your ancestors. NIV 39 Therefore, I will surely forget you and cast you out of my presence along with the city I gave to you and your fathers. NRS 40 And I will bring upon you everlasting disgrace and perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten. NIV 40 I will bring upon you everlasting disgrace--everlasting shame that will not be forgotten."
