Jeremiah 25

CSB 1 [This is] the word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah (which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon). NIV 1 The word came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. CSB 2 The prophet Jeremiah spoke concerning all the people of Judah and all the residents of Jerusalem as follows: NIV 2 So Jeremiah the prophet said to all the people of Judah and to all those living in Jerusalem: CSB 3 "From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, until this very day-23 years-the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken to you time and time again, but you have not obeyed. NIV 3 For twenty-three years--from the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah until this very day--the word of the LORD has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again, but you have not listened. CSB 4 The Lord sent all His servants the prophets to you time and time again, but you have not obeyed or even paid attention. NIV 4 And though the LORD has sent all his servants the prophets to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention. CSB 5 He announced, 'Turn, each of you, from your evil way of life and from your evil deeds. Live in the land the Lord gave to you and your ancestors forever and ever. NIV 5 They said, "Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land the LORD gave to you and your fathers for ever and ever. CSB 6 Do not follow other gods to serve them and to worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger by the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm. NIV 6 Do not follow other gods to serve and worship them; do not provoke me to anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you." CSB 7 " 'But you would not obey Me'-[this is] the Lord's declaration-'in order that you might provoke Me to anger by the work of your hands and bring disaster on yourselves.' NIV 7 "But you did not listen to me," declares the LORD, "and you have provoked me with what your hands have made, and you have brought harm to yourselves." CSB 8 "Therefore, this is what the Lord of Hosts says: 'Because you have not obeyed My words, NIV 8 Therefore the LORD Almighty says this: "Because you have not listened to my words, CSB 9 I am going to send for all the families of the north'-[this is] the Lord's declaration-'and [send for] My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will bring them against this land, against its residents, and against all these surrounding nations, and I will completely destroy them and make them a desolation, a derision, and ruins forever. NIV 9 I will summon all the peoples of the north and my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon," declares the LORD, "and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroy them and make them an object of horror and scorn, and an everlasting ruin. CSB 10 I will eliminate the sound of joy and gladness from them-the voice of the bridegroom and the bride, the sound of the millstones and the light of the lamp. NIV 10 I will banish from them the sounds of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom, the sound of millstones and the light of the lamp. CSB 11 This whole land will become a desolate ruin, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for 70 years. NIV 11 This whole country will become a desolate wasteland, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years. CSB 12 When the 70 years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation'-[this is] the Lord's declaration-'the land of the Chaldeans, for their guilt, and I will make it a ruin forever. NIV 12 "But when the seventy years are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation, the land of the Babylonians, for their guilt," declares the LORD, "and will make it desolate forever. CSB 13 I will bring on that land all My words I have spoken against it, all that is written in this book that Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. NIV 13 I will bring upon that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations. CSB 14 For many nations and great kings will enslave them, and I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.' " NIV 14 They themselves will be enslaved by many nations and great kings; I will repay them according to their deeds and the work of their hands." CSB 15 This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: "Take this cup of the wine of wrath from My hand and make all the nations I am sending you to drink from it. NIV 15 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: "Take from my hand this cup filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. CSB 16 They will drink, stagger, and go out of their minds because of the sword I am sending among them." NIV 16 When they drink it, they will stagger and go mad because of the sword I will send among them." CSB 17 So I took the cup from the Lord's hand and made all the nations drink [from it], everyone the Lord sent me to. NIV 17 So I took the cup from the LORD's hand and made all the nations to whom he sent me drink it: CSB 18 [These included:] Jerusalem and the [other] cities of Judah, its kings and its officials, to make them a desolate ruin, an object of scorn and cursing-as it is today; NIV 18 Jerusalem and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin and an object of horror and scorn and cursing, as they are today; CSB 19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his officers, his leaders, all his people, NIV 19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, his attendants, his officials and all his people, CSB 20 and all the mixed peoples; all the kings of the land of Uz; all the kings of the land of the Philistines-Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod; NIV 20 and all the foreign people there; all the kings of Uz; all the kings of the Philistines (those of Ashkelon, Gaza, Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod); CSB 21 Edom, Moab, and the Ammonites; NIV 21 Edom, Moab and Ammon; CSB 22 all the kings of Tyre, all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the coastlands across the sea; NIV 22 all the kings of Tyre and Sidon; the kings of the coastlands across the sea; CSB 23 Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all those who shave their temples; NIV 23 Dedan, Tema, Buz and all who are in distant places; CSB 24 all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mixed peoples who have settled in the desert; NIV 24 all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the foreign people who live in the desert; CSB 25 all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of Media; NIV 25 all the kings of Zimri, Elam and Media; CSB 26 all the kings of the north, both near and far from one another; that is, all the kingdoms of the world which are on the face of the earth. Finally, the king of Sheshach will drink after them. NIV 26 and all the kings of the north, near and far, one after the other--all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. And after all of them, the king of Sheshach will drink it too. CSB 27 "Then you are to say to them: This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk, and vomit. Fall down and never get up again, as a result of the sword I am sending among you. NIV 27 "Then tell them, 'This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Drink, get drunk and vomit, and fall to rise no more because of the sword I will send among you.' CSB 28 If they refuse to take the cup from you and drink, you are to say to them: This is what the Lord of Hosts says: You must drink! NIV 28 But if they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink, tell them, 'This is what the LORD Almighty says: You must drink it! CSB 29 For I am already bringing disaster on the city that bears My name, so how could you possibly go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth"-[this is] the declaration of the Lord of Hosts. NIV 29 See, I am beginning to bring disaster on the city that bears my Name, and will you indeed go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for I am calling down a sword upon all who live on the earth, declares the LORD Almighty.' CSB 30 "As for you, you are to prophesy all these things to them, and say to them: The Lord roars from on high; He raises His voice from His holy dwelling. He roars loudly over His grazing land; He calls out with a shout, like those who tread [grapes], against all the inhabitants of the earth. NIV 30 "Now prophesy all these words against them and say to them: " 'The LORD will roar from on high; he will thunder from his holy dwelling and roar mightily against his land. He will shout like those who tread the grapes, shout against all who live on the earth. CSB 31 The tumult reaches to the ends of the earth because the Lord brings a case against the nations. He enters into judgment with all flesh. As for the wicked, He hands them over to the sword- [This is] the Lord's declaration. NIV 31 The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth, for the LORD will bring charges against the nations; he will bring judgment on all mankind and put the wicked to the sword,' " declares the LORD. CSB 32 "This is what the Lord of Hosts says: Pay attention! Disaster goes forth from nation to nation. A great storm is stirred up from the ends of the earth." NIV 32 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Look! Disaster is spreading from nation to nation; a mighty storm is rising from the ends of the earth." CSB 33 Those slain by the Lord on that day will be [spread] from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned, gathered, or buried. They will be like manure on the surface of the ground. NIV 33 At that time those slain by the LORD will be everywhere--from one end of the earth to the other. They will not be mourned or gathered up or buried, but will be like refuse lying on the ground. CSB 34 Wail, you shepherds, and cry out. Roll [in the dust],you leaders of the flock. Because the days of your slaughter have come, you will fall and become shattered like a precious vase. NIV 34 Weep and wail, you shepherds; roll in the dust, you leaders of the flock. For your time to be slaughtered has come; you will fall and be shattered like fine pottery. CSB 35 Flight will be impossible for the shepherds, and escape, for the leaders of the flock. NIV 35 The shepherds will have nowhere to flee, the leaders of the flock no place to escape. CSB 36 [Hear] the sound of the shepherds' cry, the wail of the leaders of the flock, for the Lord is destroying their pasture. NIV 36 Hear the cry of the shepherds, the wailing of the leaders of the flock, for the LORD is destroying their pasture. CSB 37 Peaceful grazing land will become lifeless because of the Lord's burning anger. NIV 37 The peaceful meadows will be laid waste because of the fierce anger of the LORD. CSB 38 He has left His den like a lion, for their land has become a desolation because of the sword of the oppressor, because of His burning anger. NIV 38 Like a lion he will leave his lair, and their land will become desolate because of the sword of the oppressor and because of the LORD's fierce anger.
