Jeremiah 35

NLT 1 This is the message the gave Jeremiah when Jehoiakim son of Josiah was king of Judah: NIV 1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD during the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah: NLT 2 “Go to the settlement where the families of the Recabites live, and invite them to the ’s Temple. Take them into one of the inner rooms, and offer them some wine.” NIV 2 "Go to the Recabite family and invite them to come to one of the side rooms of the house of the LORD and give them wine to drink." NLT 3 So I went to see Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah and grandson of Habazziniah and all his brothers and sons—representing all the Recabite families. NIV 3 So I went to get Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons--the whole family of the Recabites. NLT 4 I took them to the Temple, and we went into the room assigned to the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, a man of God. This room was located next to the one used by the Temple officials, directly above the room of Maaseiah son of Shallum, the Temple gatekeeper. NIV 4 I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the room of the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah the man of God. It was next to the room of the officials, which was over that of Maaseiah son of Shallum the doorkeeper. NLT 5 I set cups and jugs of wine before them and invited them to have a drink, NIV 5 Then I set bowls full of wine and some cups before the men of the Recabite family and said to them, "Drink some wine." NLT 6 but they refused. “No,” they said, “we don’t drink wine, because our ancestor Jehonadab son of Recab gave us this command: ‘You and your descendants must never drink wine. NIV 6 But they replied, "We do not drink wine, because our forefather Jonadab son of Recab gave us this command: 'Neither you nor your descendants must ever drink wine. NLT 7 And do not build houses or plant crops or vineyards, but always live in tents. If you follow these commands, you will live long, good lives in the land.’ NIV 7 Also you must never build houses, sow seed or plant vineyards; you must never have any of these things, but must always live in tents. Then you will live a long time in the land where you are nomads.' NLT 8 So we have obeyed him in all these things. We have never had a drink of wine to this day, nor have our wives, our sons, or our daughters. NIV 8 We have obeyed everything our forefather Jonadab son of Recab commanded us. Neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters have ever drunk wine NLT 9 We haven’t built houses or owned vineyards or farms or planted crops. NIV 9 or built houses to live in or had vineyards, fields or crops. NLT 10 We have lived in tents and have fully obeyed all the commands of Jehonadab, our ancestor. NIV 10 We have lived in tents and have fully obeyed everything our forefather Jonadab commanded us. NLT 11 But when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon attacked this country, we were afraid of the Babylonian and Syrian armies. So we decided to move to Jerusalem. That is why we are here.” NIV 11 But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded this land, we said, 'Come, we must go to Jerusalem to escape the Babylonian and Aramean armies.' So we have remained in Jerusalem." NLT 12 Then the gave this message to Jeremiah: NIV 12 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying: NLT 13 “This is what the of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: Go and say to the people in Judah and Jerusalem, ‘Come and learn a lesson about how to obey me. NIV 13 "This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem, 'Will you not learn a lesson and obey my words?' declares the LORD. NLT 14 The Recabites do not drink wine to this day because their ancestor Jehonadab told them not to. But I have spoken to you again and again, and you refuse to obey me. NIV 14 'Jonadab son of Recab ordered his sons not to drink wine and this command has been kept. To this day they do not drink wine, because they obey their forefather's command. But I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not obeyed me. NLT 15 Time after time I sent you prophets, who told you, “Turn from your wicked ways, and start doing things right. Stop worshiping other gods so that you might live in peace here in the land I have given to you and your ancestors.” But you would not listen to me or obey me. NIV 15 Again and again I sent all my servants the prophets to you. They said, "Each of you must turn from your wicked ways and reform your actions; do not follow other gods to serve them. Then you will live in the land I have given to you and your fathers." But you have not paid attention or listened to me. NLT 16 The descendants of Jehonadab son of Recab have obeyed their ancestor completely, but you have refused to listen to me.’ NIV 16 The descendants of Jonadab son of Recab have carried out the command their forefather gave them, but these people have not obeyed me.' NLT 17 “Therefore, this is what the God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Because you refuse to listen or answer when I call, I will send upon Judah and Jerusalem all the disasters I have threatened.’” NIV 17 "Therefore, this is what the LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'Listen! I am going to bring on Judah and on everyone living in Jerusalem every disaster I pronounced against them. I spoke to them, but they did not listen; I called to them, but they did not answer.' " NLT 18 Then Jeremiah turned to the Recabites and said, “This is what the of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘You have obeyed your ancestor Jehonadab in every respect, following all his instructions.’ NIV 18 Then Jeremiah said to the family of the Recabites, "This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'You have obeyed the command of your forefather Jonadab and have followed all his instructions and have done everything he ordered.' NLT 19 Therefore, this is what the of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Jehonadab son of Recab will always have descendants who serve me.’” NIV 19 Therefore, this is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'Jonadab son of Recab will never fail to have a man to serve me.'
