Jeremiah 5

CJB 1 "Roam the streets of Yerushalayim look around, observe and ask in its open spaces: if you can find anyone (if there is anyone!) who acts with justice and seeks the truth, I will pardon her. NIV 1 "Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem, look around and consider, search through her squares. If you can find but one person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I will forgive this city. CJB 2 And though they say, 'As ADONAI lives,' the fact is that they are swearing falsely." NIV 2 Although they say, 'As surely as the LORD lives,' still they are swearing falsely." CJB 3 ADONAI, your eyes look for truth. You struck them, but they weren't affected; you [nearly] destroyed them, but they refused correction. They made their faces harder than rock, refusing to repent. NIV 3 O LORD, do not your eyes look for truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain; you crushed them, but they refused correction. They made their faces harder than stone and refused to repent. CJB 4 My reaction was, "These must be the poor, the foolish, not knowing the way of ADONAI or the rulings of their God. NIV 4 I thought, "These are only the poor; they are foolish, for they do not know the way of the LORD, the requirements of their God. CJB 5 I will go to the prominent men, and I will speak to them; for they know the way of ADONAI and the rulings of their God." But these had completely broken the yoke and torn the harness off. NIV 5 So I will go to the leaders and speak to them; surely they know the way of the LORD, the requirements of their God." But with one accord they too had broken off the yoke and torn off the bonds. CJB 6 This is why a forest lion kills them, why a desert wolf can plunder them, why a leopard guards their cities - all who leave are torn to pieces - because their crimes are many, their backslidings keep increasing. NIV 6 Therefore a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the desert will ravage them, a leopard will lie in wait near their towns to tear to pieces any who venture out, for their rebellion is great and their backslidings many. CJB 7 "Why should I forgive you? Your people have abandoned me and sworn by non-gods. When I fed them to the full, they committed adultery, thronging to the brothels. NIV 7 "Why should I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me and sworn by gods that are not gods. I supplied all their needs, yet they committed adultery and thronged to the houses of prostitutes. CJB 8 They have become like well-fed horses, lusty stallions, each one neighing after his neighbor's wife. NIV 8 They are well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for another man's wife. CJB 9 Should I not punish for this?" asks ADONAI. "Should I not be avenged on a nation like this?" NIV 9 Should I not punish them for this?" declares the LORD. "Should I not avenge myself on such a nation as this? CJB 10 Go through her rows [of vines], and destroy them (but don't destroy them completely): strip away her branches, they do not belong to ADONAI. NIV 10 "Go through her vineyards and ravage them, but do not destroy them completely. Strip off her branches, for these people do not belong to the LORD. CJB 11 "For the house of Isra'el and the house of Y'hudah have thoroughly betrayed me," says ADONAI. NIV 11 The house of Israel and the house of Judah have been utterly unfaithful to me," declares the LORD. CJB 12 They have denied ADONAI, they have said, "He won't do anything, calamity will not strike us, we will see neither sword nor famine. NIV 12 They have lied about the LORD; they said, "He will do nothing! No harm will come to us; we will never see sword or famine. CJB 13 The prophets are merely wind, they do not have the word; the things that they are predicting will happen only to them." NIV 13 The prophets are but wind and the word is not in them; so let what they say be done to them." CJB 14 Therefore ADONAI Elohei-Tzva'ot says: "Because you people speak this way, I will make my words fire in your mouth, [Yirmeyahu,] and this people wood; so that it will devour them. NIV 14 Therefore this is what the LORD God Almighty says: "Because the people have spoken these words, I will make my words in your mouth a fire and these people the wood it consumes. CJB 15 I will bring on you, house of Isra'el, a distant nation," says ADONAI, "an enduring nation, an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know - you will not understand what they are saying. NIV 15 O house of Israel," declares the LORD, "I am bringing a distant nation against you-- an ancient and enduring nation, a people whose language you do not know, whose speech you do not understand. CJB 16 Their quiver is like an open grave, they are all mighty warriors. NIV 16 Their quivers are like an open grave; all of them are mighty warriors. CJB 17 They will eat up your harvest and your bread, they will eat up your sons and your daughters, they will eat up your flocks and your herds, they will eat up your vines and your fig trees; with the sword they will beat down your fortified cities, in which you trust. NIV 17 They will devour your harvests and food, devour your sons and daughters; they will devour your flocks and herds, devour your vines and fig trees. With the sword they will destroy the fortified cities in which you trust. CJB 18 But even in those days," says ADONAI, "I will not completely destroy you. NIV 18 "Yet even in those days," declares the LORD, "I will not destroy you completely. CJB 19 And when your people ask, 'Why has ADONAI our God done all these things to us?' you are to give them this answer: 'Just as you abandoned me and served strange gods in your own land, so likewise you will serve strangers in a land that is not your own.' NIV 19 And when the people ask, 'Why has the LORD our God done all this to us?' you will tell them, 'As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your own land, so now you will serve foreigners in a land not your own.' CJB 20 Announce this in the house of Ya'akov, proclaim it in Y'hudah; say: NIV 20 "Announce this to the house of Jacob and proclaim it in Judah: CJB 21 'Hear this, stupid, brainless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear: NIV 21 Hear this, you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear: CJB 22 Don't you fear me? - says ADONAI. Won't you tremble at my presence? I made the shore the limit for the sea; by eternal decree it cannot pass. Its waves may toss, but to no avail; although they roar, they cannot cross it. NIV 22 Should you not fear me?" declares the LORD. "Should you not tremble in my presence? I made the sand a boundary for the sea, an everlasting barrier it cannot cross. The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail; they may roar, but they cannot cross it. CJB 23 But this people has a rebellious, defiant heart; they have rebelled and gone! NIV 23 But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts; they have turned aside and gone away. CJB 24 They don't say to themselves, "Let's fear ADONAI our God, who gives the fall and spring rains in season, who reserves us the weeks assigned for harvest." NIV 24 They do not say to themselves, 'Let us fear the LORD our God, who gives autumn and spring rains in season, who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.' CJB 25 Your crimes have overturned nature's rules, your sins have kept back good from you.' NIV 25 Your wrongdoings have kept these away; your sins have deprived you of good. CJB 26 "For among my people there are wicked men, who, like fowlers, lie in wait and set traps to catch their fellow human beings. NIV 26 "Among my people are wicked men who lie in wait like men who snare birds and like those who set traps to catch men. CJB 27 Their houses are as full of fraud as a cage full of birds. They grow rich and great, NIV 27 Like cages full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; they have become rich and powerful CJB 28 sleek and bloated; they excel in acts of wickedness but do not plead on behalf of the orphan, thus enabling his cause to succeed; nor do they judge in favor of the poor. NIV 28 and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit; they do not plead the case of the fatherless to win it, they do not defend the rights of the poor. CJB 29 "Should I not punish for this?" asks ADONAI. "Should I not be avenged on a nation like this? NIV 29 Should I not punish them for this?" declares the LORD. "Should I not avenge myself on such a nation as this? CJB 30 A shocking and horrifying thing has happened in the land: NIV 30 "A horrible and shocking thing has happened in the land: CJB 31 The prophets prophesy lies, the cohanim obey the prophets, and my people love it that way. But what will you do at the end of it all? NIV 31 The prophets prophesy lies, the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?
