Jeremiah 5

LEB 1 "Roam about through the streets of Jerusalem, and look please, and take note, and search at its public squares, if you can find a person [who] does justice, [who] seeks honesty, so that I may forgive it. NIV 1 "Go up and down the streets of Jerusalem, look around and consider, search through her squares. If you can find but one person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I will forgive this city. LEB 2 And though they say, '{As Yahweh lives},' {therefore} they swear falsely." NIV 2 Although they say, 'As surely as the LORD lives,' still they are swearing falsely." LEB 3 [O] Yahweh, do not your eyes [look] for honesty? You have struck them, but they felt no pain, you have destroyed them, they refused to take discipline. They have hardened their faces more than rock, they have refused to turn back. NIV 3 O LORD, do not your eyes look for truth? You struck them, but they felt no pain; you crushed them, but they refused correction. They made their faces harder than stone and refused to repent. LEB 4 Then I said, "[They are] just simple people, they are foolish, for they know not the way of Yahweh, the law of their God. NIV 4 I thought, "These are only the poor; they are foolish, for they do not know the way of the LORD, the requirements of their God. LEB 5 Let me go to the great, and let me speak with them, for they know the way of Yahweh, the law of their God." However, they together have broken [the] yoke, they have torn to pieces [the] bonds. NIV 5 So I will go to the leaders and speak to them; surely they know the way of the LORD, the requirements of their God." But with one accord they too had broken off the yoke and torn off the bonds. LEB 6 Therefore a lion from [the] forest will kill them, A wolf [from the] desert plains will devastate them. A leopard [is] watching their cities, everyone [who] goes out from there will be torn, because their transgressions are many, their apostasies are numerous. NIV 6 Therefore a lion from the forest will attack them, a wolf from the desert will ravage them, a leopard will lie in wait near their towns to tear to pieces any who venture out, for their rebellion is great and their backslidings many. LEB 7 "{How} can I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me, and they have sworn by [those who are] not gods. But I fed them to the full, and they committed adultery, and flocked [to] the house of a prostitute. NIV 7 "Why should I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me and sworn by gods that are not gods. I supplied all their needs, yet they committed adultery and thronged to the houses of prostitutes. LEB 8 They were well-fed lusty horses, they neighed each to the wife of his neighbor. NIV 8 They are well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing for another man's wife. LEB 9 Because of these [things] shall I not punish?" {declares} Yahweh, "and on a nation who [is] like this, shall I not take revenge? NIV 9 Should I not punish them for this?" declares the LORD. "Should I not avenge myself on such a nation as this? LEB 10 Go up through her vineyards and destroy, but you must not make complete destruction. Remove her branches, for they [are] not to Yahweh. NIV 10 "Go through her vineyards and ravage them, but do not destroy them completely. Strip off her branches, for these people do not belong to the LORD. LEB 11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt utterly treacherously with me," {declares} Yahweh. NIV 11 The house of Israel and the house of Judah have been utterly unfaithful to me," declares the LORD. LEB 12 "They have denied Yahweh, and have said, 'Not he, {for} evil will not come on us, we will see neither sword nor famine. NIV 12 They have lied about the LORD; they said, "He will do nothing! No harm will come to us; we will never see sword or famine. LEB 13 And the prophets are like wind, and the word [is] not in them.' Thus it will be done to them." NIV 13 The prophets are but wind and the word is not in them; so let what they say be done to them." LEB 14 {Therefore} thus says Yahweh, the God of hosts, "Because you have spoken this word, look, I [am] making my words in your mouth like a fire, and this people wood, and it will devour them. NIV 14 Therefore this is what the LORD God Almighty says: "Because the people have spoken these words, I will make my words in your mouth a fire and these people the wood it consumes. LEB 15 Look, I [am] about to bring on you a nation from afar, [O] house of Israel," {declares} Yahweh. "It [is] an enduring nation, it [is] {an ancient nation}. A nation whose language you do not know, and you cannot understand what they speak. NIV 15 O house of Israel," declares the LORD, "I am bringing a distant nation against you-- an ancient and enduring nation, a people whose language you do not know, whose speech you do not understand. LEB 16 Their quiver [is] like an open tomb, all of them [are] warriors. NIV 16 Their quivers are like an open grave; all of them are mighty warriors. LEB 17 And they will eat your harvest and your food, they will eat your sons and your daughters, they will eat your flock and your herd, they will eat your vine and your fig tree, they will smash with the sword {your fortified cities}, in which you trust. NIV 17 They will devour your harvests and food, devour your sons and daughters; they will devour your flocks and herds, devour your vines and fig trees. With the sword they will destroy the fortified cities in which you trust. LEB 18 "But even in those days," {declares} Yahweh, "I will not make you a complete destruction. NIV 18 "Yet even in those days," declares the LORD, "I will not destroy you completely. LEB 19 {And then}, when you [people] say, 'Why has Yahweh our God done all of these [things] to us?' Then you will say to them, 'As you have forsaken me and have served gods of a foreign land in your land, so will you serve strangers in {a land that does not belong to you}.' NIV 19 And when the people ask, 'Why has the LORD our God done all this to us?' you will tell them, 'As you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your own land, so now you will serve foreigners in a land not your own.' LEB 20 "Declare this in the house of Jacob, and proclaim it in Judah, saying, NIV 20 "Announce this to the house of Jacob and proclaim it in Judah: LEB 21 'Hear this please, [O] foolish and {senseless} people, {who have eyes} but do not see, {who have ears} but do not hear.' NIV 21 Hear this, you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear: LEB 22 Do you not revere me?" {declares} Yahweh, "Do you not tremble {before me}? For I have placed [the] sand [as] a boundary for the sea, {as an everlasting limit}, and it cannot pass over it, and they rise and fall loudly, but they cannot prevail, and its waves roar, but they cannot pass over it. NIV 22 Should you not fear me?" declares the LORD. "Should you not tremble in my presence? I made the sand a boundary for the sea, an everlasting barrier it cannot cross. The waves may roll, but they cannot prevail; they may roar, but they cannot cross it. LEB 23 But for this people is a stubborn and rebellious heart, they have turned aside and have gone [away]. NIV 23 But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts; they have turned aside and gone away. LEB 24 And they do not say in their hearts, 'Let us fear please Yahweh our God, the [one who] gives [the] autumn rain and [the] spring rain in its season, {the set times of the harvest} he keeps for us.' NIV 24 They do not say to themselves, 'Let us fear the LORD our God, who gives autumn and spring rains in season, who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.' LEB 25 Your iniquities have disturbed these, and your sins have kept away the good from you. NIV 25 Your wrongdoings have kept these away; your sins have deprived you of good. LEB 26 For wicked people are found among my people, they lie in wait like the hiding of fowlers, they set up a trap, they catch humans. NIV 26 "Among my people are wicked men who lie in wait like men who snare birds and like those who set traps to catch men. LEB 27 Like a cage full of birds, so their houses [are] full of fraud. {Therefore} they have become great, and they have become rich. NIV 27 Like cages full of birds, their houses are full of deceit; they have become rich and powerful LEB 28 They have grown fat, they have grown sleek, also, {their evil deeds have no limit}. They do not judge [with] justice, [the] legal cause of [the] orphan, or allow it to succeed, and [the] legal case of [the] poor, they do not defend. NIV 28 and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit; they do not plead the case of the fatherless to win it, they do not defend the rights of the poor. LEB 29 Because of these [things] shall I not punish?" {declares} Yahweh, "and on a nation who [is] like this, shall I not take revenge? NIV 29 Should I not punish them for this?" declares the LORD. "Should I not avenge myself on such a nation as this? LEB 30 A horrific event and something horrible has happened in the land. NIV 30 "A horrible and shocking thing has happened in the land: LEB 31 The prophets prophesy {falsely}, and the priests rule {by their own authority}, and my people love [it] so much. But what will you do {when the end comes}? NIV 31 The prophets prophesy lies, the priests rule by their own authority, and my people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?
