Jeremiah 6

CEB 1 Escape, people of Benjamin, get out of Jerusalem! Blow the trumpet in Tekoa, sound the alarm in Beth-haccherem; for disaster looms from the north, massive devastation. NIV 1 "Flee for safety, people of Benjamin! Flee from Jerusalem! Sound the trumpet in Tekoa! Raise the signal over Beth Hakkerem! For disaster looms out of the north, even terrible destruction. CEB 2 You are like a lovely pasture, Daughter Zion. NIV 2 I will destroy the Daughter of Zion, so beautiful and delicate. CEB 3 Shepherds come to her with their flocks. They pitch their tents around her and graze in their place. NIV 3 Shepherds with their flocks will come against her; they will pitch their tents around her, each tending his own portion." CEB 4 "Prepare for battle against her; get ready; let's attack by noon! Oh, no! Daylight is fading, and the evening shadows lengthen. NIV 4 "Prepare for battle against her! Arise, let us attack at noon! But, alas, the daylight is fading, and the shadows of evening grow long. CEB 5 Get ready, let's attack by night and destroy her fortresses!" NIV 5 So arise, let us attack at night and destroy her fortresses!" CEB 6 The LORD of heavenly forces proclaims: Cut down her trees, and build siege ramps against Jerusalem. This city must be held accountable, for there's nothing but oppression in her midst. NIV 6 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Cut down the trees and build siege ramps against Jerusalem. This city must be punished; it is filled with oppression. CEB 7 As a well brings forth fresh water, she brings forth evil. Violence and destruction are heard within her; injury and wounds are ever before me. NIV 7 As a well pours out its water, so she pours out her wickedness. Violence and destruction resound in her; her sickness and wounds are ever before me. CEB 8 Hear me out, Jerusalem, or else I'll turn away from you and reduce you to ruins, a land unfit to live in. NIV 8 Take warning, O Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you and make your land desolate so no one can live in it." CEB 9 This is what the LORD of heavenly forces says: From top to bottom, let them harvest the remaining few in Israel. Pick clean every last grape on the vine! NIV 9 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Let them glean the remnant of Israel as thoroughly as a vine; pass your hand over the branches again, like one gathering grapes." CEB 10 To whom can I speak and warn? How can I get someone's attention? Their ears are shut tight, so they won't hear. They are ashamed of the LORD's word and take no pleasure in it. NIV 10 To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the LORD is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it. CEB 11 But I'm filled with the LORD's rage and am tired of holding it in. Pour it out on the children in the streets and on the youths gathered together; husband with wife will be trapped, as will those old and gray. NIV 11 But I am full of the wrath of the LORD, and I cannot hold it in. "Pour it out on the children in the street and on the young men gathered together; both husband and wife will be caught in it, and the old, those weighed down with years. CEB 12 Their homes will be turned over to others, their fields and wives as well. I will stretch out my hand against the people of this land, declares the LORD. NIV 12 Their houses will be turned over to others, together with their fields and their wives, when I stretch out my hand against those who live in the land," declares the LORD. CEB 13 From the least to the greatest, each is eager to profit; from prophet to priest, each trades in dishonesty. NIV 13 "From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit. CEB 14 They treat the wound of my people as if it were nothing: "All is well, all is well," they insist, when in fact nothing is well. NIV 14 They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. 'Peace, peace,' they say, when there is no peace. CEB 15 They should be ashamed of their detestable practices, but they have no shame; they don't even blush! Therefore, they will fall among the fallen and stumble when I bring disaster, declares the LORD. NIV 15 Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when I punish them," says the LORD. CEB 16 The LORD proclaims: Stop at the crossroads and look around; ask for the ancient paths. Where is the good way? Then walk in it and find a resting place for yourselves. But you said, "We won't go!" NIV 16 This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, 'We will not walk in it.' CEB 17 Still, I have appointed watchmen to warn you. But you said, "We won't listen!" NIV 17 I appointed watchmen over you and said, 'Listen to the sound of the trumpet!' But you said, 'We will not listen.' CEB 18 Therefore, pay attention, nations; take notice, assembly, what is ahead of them. NIV 18 Therefore hear, O nations; observe, O witnesses, what will happen to them. CEB 19 Pay attention, earth: I'm bringing disaster upon my people, the fruit of their own devices, because they have ignored my words and they have rejected my teaching. NIV 19 Hear, O earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their schemes, because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law. CEB 20 What use to me is incense from Sheba or sweet cane from a faraway land? Your entirely burned offerings won't buy your pardon; your sacrifices won't appease me. NIV 20 What do I care about incense from Sheba or sweet calamus from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable; your sacrifices do not please me." CEB 21 Therefore, the LORD proclaims: I'm putting obstacles before this people, and both parents and children will stumble over them; neighbor and friend alike will perish. NIV 21 Therefore this is what the LORD says: "I will put obstacles before this people. Fathers and sons alike will stumble over them; neighbors and friends will perish." CEB 22 The LORD proclaims: An army is on the move from the northern regions; a great nation is roused from the ends of the earth. NIV 22 This is what the LORD says: "Look, an army is coming from the land of the north; a great nation is being stirred up from the ends of the earth. CEB 23 Equipped with bow and spear, they are cruel; they show no mercy. Their horsemen sound like the roaring sea, arrayed in battle formation against you, Daughter Zion. NIV 23 They are armed with bow and spear; they are cruel and show no mercy. They sound like the roaring sea as they ride on their horses; they come like men in battle formation to attack you, O Daughter of Zion." CEB 24 We have heard reports of them and are panic-stricken; distress overwhelms us, pain like that of a woman in labor. NIV 24 We have heard reports about them, and our hands hang limp. Anguish has gripped us, pain like that of a woman in labor. CEB 25 Don't go out into the field! Don't walk on the road! The enemies' sword terrorizes at every turn. NIV 25 Do not go out to the fields or walk on the roads, for the enemy has a sword, and there is terror on every side. CEB 26 My people, put on funeral clothes and roll in ashes; weep and wail as for an only child, because the destroyer will suddenly descend upon us. NIV 26 O my people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes; mourn with bitter wailing as for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us. CEB 27 I have made you a tester of metals, to examine my people to know and prove their ways. NIV 27 "I have made you a tester of metals and my people the ore, that you may observe and test their ways. CEB 28 They are tin and iron; they are headstrong and rebellious. They live to slander. They act corruptly—every last one! NIV 28 They are all hardened rebels, going about to slander. They are bronze and iron; they all act corruptly. CEB 29 The bellows roar; the lead is consumed. Yet the refining fails; the impurities remain. NIV 29 The bellows blow fiercely to burn away the lead with fire, but the refining goes on in vain; the wicked are not purged out. CEB 30 They are called "rejected silver," for the LORD has rejected them. NIV 30 They are called rejected silver, because the LORD has rejected them."
