Jeremiah 6

WBT 1 O ye children of Benjamin, gather yourselves to flee out of the midst of Jerusalem, and blow the trumpet in Tekoa, and set up a sign of fire in Beth-haccerem: for evil appeareth out of the north, and great destruction. NIV 1 "Flee for safety, people of Benjamin! Flee from Jerusalem! Sound the trumpet in Tekoa! Raise the signal over Beth Hakkerem! For disaster looms out of the north, even terrible destruction. WBT 2 I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate [woman]. NIV 2 I will destroy the Daughter of Zion, so beautiful and delicate. WBT 3 The shepherds with their flocks shall come to her; they shall pitch [their] tents against her on every side; they shall feed every one in his place. NIV 3 Shepherds with their flocks will come against her; they will pitch their tents around her, each tending his own portion." WBT 4 Prepare ye war against her; arise, and let us go up at noon. Woe to us! for the day departeth, for the shadows of the evening are lengthened. NIV 4 "Prepare for battle against her! Arise, let us attack at noon! But, alas, the daylight is fading, and the shadows of evening grow long. WBT 5 Arise, and let us go by night, and let us destroy her palaces. NIV 5 So arise, let us attack at night and destroy her fortresses!" WBT 6 For thus hath the LORD of hosts said, Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount against Jerusalem: this [is] the city to be visited; she [is] wholly oppression in the midst of her. NIV 6 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Cut down the trees and build siege ramps against Jerusalem. This city must be punished; it is filled with oppression. WBT 7 As a fountain casteth out her waters, so she casteth out her wickedness: violence and devastation is heard in her; before me continually [are] grief and wounds. NIV 7 As a well pours out its water, so she pours out her wickedness. Violence and destruction resound in her; her sickness and wounds are ever before me. WBT 8 Be thou instructed, O Jerusalem, lest my soul depart from thee; lest I make thee desolate, a land not inhabited. NIV 8 Take warning, O Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you and make your land desolate so no one can live in it." WBT 9 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall thoroughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine: turn back thy hand as a grape-gatherer into the baskets. NIV 9 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Let them glean the remnant of Israel as thoroughly as a vine; pass your hand over the branches again, like one gathering grapes." WBT 10 To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ear [is] uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is to them a reproach; they have no delight in it. NIV 10 To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the LORD is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it. WBT 11 Therefore I am full of the fury of the LORD; I am weary with holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with [him that is] full of days. NIV 11 But I am full of the wrath of the LORD, and I cannot hold it in. "Pour it out on the children in the street and on the young men gathered together; both husband and wife will be caught in it, and the old, those weighed down with years. WBT 12 And their houses shall be turned to others, [with their] fields and wives together: for I will stretch out my hand upon the inhabitants of the land, saith the LORD. NIV 12 Their houses will be turned over to others, together with their fields and their wives, when I stretch out my hand against those who live in the land," declares the LORD. WBT 13 For from the least of them even to the greatest of them every one [is] given to covetousness; and from the prophet even to the priest every one dealeth falsely. NIV 13 "From the least to the greatest, all are greedy for gain; prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit. WBT 14 They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when [there is] no peace. NIV 14 They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. 'Peace, peace,' they say, when there is no peace. WBT 15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? no, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time [that] I visit them they shall be cast down, saith the LORD. NIV 15 Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when I punish them," says the LORD. WBT 16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where [is] the good way, and walk in it, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk [in it]. NIV 16 This is what the LORD says: "Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, 'We will not walk in it.' WBT 17 Also I set watchmen over you, [saying], Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken. NIV 17 I appointed watchmen over you and said, 'Listen to the sound of the trumpet!' But you said, 'We will not listen.' WBT 18 Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what [is] among them. NIV 18 Therefore hear, O nations; observe, O witnesses, what will happen to them. WBT 19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, [even] the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened to my words, nor to my law, but have rejected it. NIV 19 Hear, O earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their schemes, because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law. WBT 20 To what purpose cometh there to me incense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a distant country? your burnt-offerings [are] not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet to me. NIV 20 What do I care about incense from Sheba or sweet calamus from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable; your sacrifices do not please me." WBT 21 Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumbling-blocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbor and his friend shall perish. NIV 21 Therefore this is what the LORD says: "I will put obstacles before this people. Fathers and sons alike will stumble over them; neighbors and friends will perish." WBT 22 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, a people cometh from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth. NIV 22 This is what the LORD says: "Look, an army is coming from the land of the north; a great nation is being stirred up from the ends of the earth. WBT 23 They shall lay hold on bow and spear; they [are] cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, set in array as men for war against thee, O daughter of Zion. NIV 23 They are armed with bow and spear; they are cruel and show no mercy. They sound like the roaring sea as they ride on their horses; they come like men in battle formation to attack you, O Daughter of Zion." WBT 24 We have heard the fame of it: our hands become feeble: anguish hath taken hold of us, [and] pain, as of a woman in travail. NIV 24 We have heard reports about them, and our hands hang limp. Anguish has gripped us, pain like that of a woman in labor. WBT 25 Go not forth into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy [and] fear [is] on every side. NIV 25 Do not go out to the fields or walk on the roads, for the enemy has a sword, and there is terror on every side. WBT 26 O daughter of my people, gird [thee] with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning, [as for] an only son, most bitter lamentation: for the spoiler shall suddenly come upon us. NIV 26 O my people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes; mourn with bitter wailing as for an only son, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us. WBT 27 I have set thee [for] a tower [and] a fortress among my people, that thou mayest know and try their way. NIV 27 "I have made you a tester of metals and my people the ore, that you may observe and test their ways. WBT 28 They [are] all grievous revolters, walking with slanders: [they are] brass and iron; they [are] all corrupters. NIV 28 They are all hardened rebels, going about to slander. They are bronze and iron; they all act corruptly. WBT 29 The bellows is burned, the lead is consumed by the fire; the founder melteth in vain: for the wicked are not plucked away. NIV 29 The bellows blow fiercely to burn away the lead with fire, but the refining goes on in vain; the wicked are not purged out. WBT 30 Reprobate silver shall [men] call them, because the LORD hath rejected them. NIV 30 They are called rejected silver, because the LORD has rejected them."
