Job 15

HNV 1 Then Elifaz the Temanite answered, NIV 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: HNV 2 "Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, And fill himself with the east wind? NIV 2 "Would a wise man answer with empty notions or fill his belly with the hot east wind? HNV 3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk, Or with speeches with which he can do no good? NIV 3 Would he argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value? HNV 4 Yes, you do away with fear, And hinder devotion before God. NIV 4 But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God. HNV 5 For your iniquity teaches your mouth, And you choose the language of the crafty. NIV 5 Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty. HNV 6 Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; Yes, your own lips testify against you. NIV 6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you. HNV 7 "Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought forth before the hills? NIV 7 "Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? HNV 8 Have you heard the secret counsel of God? Do you limit wisdom to yourself? NIV 8 Do you listen in on God's council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself ? HNV 9 What do you know, that we don't know? What do you understand, which is not in us? NIV 9 What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have? HNV 10 With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, Much elder than your father. NIV 10 The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father. HNV 11 Are the consolations of God too small for you, Even the word that is gentle toward you? NIV 11 Are God's consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you? HNV 12 Why does your heart carry you away? Why do your eyes flash, NIV 12 Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, HNV 13 That you turn your spirit against God, And let such words go out of your mouth? NIV 13 so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth? HNV 14 What is man, that he should be clean? He who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? NIV 14 "What is man, that he could be pure, or one born of woman, that he could be righteous? HNV 15 Behold, he puts no trust in his holy ones; Yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight: NIV 15 If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, HNV 16 How much less one who is abominable and corrupt, A man who drinks iniquity like water! NIV 16 how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil like water! HNV 17 "I will show you, listen to me; That which I have seen I will declare: NIV 17 "Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen, HNV 18 (Which wise men have told From their fathers, and have not hidden it; NIV 18 what wise men have declared, hiding nothing received from their fathers HNV 19 To whom alone the land was given, And no stranger passed among them): NIV 19 (to whom alone the land was given when no alien passed among them): HNV 20 The wicked man travails with pain all his days, Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor. NIV 20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless through all the years stored up for him. HNV 21 A sound of terrors is in his ears; In prosperity the destroyer shall come on him. NIV 21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him. HNV 22 He doesn't believe that he shall return out of darkness, He is waited for by the sword. NIV 22 He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword. HNV 23 He wanders abroad for bread, saying, 'Where is it?' He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. NIV 23 He wanders about--food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at hand. HNV 24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. NIV 24 Distress and anguish fill him with terror; they overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack, HNV 25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God, And behaves himself proudly against Shaddai; NIV 25 because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty, HNV 26 He runs at him with a stiff neck, With the thick shields of his bucklers; NIV 26 defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield. HNV 27 Because he has covered his face with his fatness, And gathered fat on his loins. NIV 27 "Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh, HNV 28 He has lived in desolate cities, In houses which no one inhabited, Which were ready to become heaps. NIV 28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. HNV 29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, Neither shall their possessions be extended on the eretz. NIV 29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. HNV 30 He shall not depart out of darkness; The flame shall dry up his branches, By the breath of God's mouth shall he go away. NIV 30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. HNV 31 Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; For emptiness shall be his reward. NIV 31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return. HNV 32 It shall be accomplished before his time. His branch shall not be green. NIV 32 Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. HNV 33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, And shall cast off his flower as the olive tree. NIV 33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. HNV 34 For the company of the godless shall be barren, And fire shall consume the tents of bribery. NIV 34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. HNV 35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. Their heart prepares deceit." NIV 35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit."
