Job 15

LEB 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, NIV 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: LEB 2 "Should [the] wise answer [with] windy knowledge, and should he fill his stomach [with the] east wind? NIV 2 "Would a wise man answer with empty notions or fill his belly with the hot east wind? LEB 3 Should he argue in talk [that] is not profitable or [in] words with which he cannot do good? NIV 3 Would he argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value? LEB 4 "{What is worse}, you yourself are doing away with fear, and you are lessening meditation {before} God. NIV 4 But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God. LEB 5 For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose [the] tongue of [the] crafty. NIV 5 Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty. LEB 6 Your mouth condemns you, and not I; and your lips testify against you. NIV 6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you. LEB 7 "Were you born the firstborn of the human race? And were you brought forth {before} [the] hills? NIV 7 "Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? LEB 8 Have you listened in God's confidential discussion? And do you limit wisdom to yourself? NIV 8 Do you listen in on God's council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself ? LEB 9 What do you know that we do not know? [What] do you understand that [is] not clear to us? NIV 9 What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have? LEB 10 Both [the] gray-haired and [the] old [are] among us-- {those older than your father}. NIV 10 The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father. LEB 11 "Are the consolations of God too small for you, a word [spoken] gently with you? NIV 11 Are God's consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you? LEB 12 Why does your heart carry you away? And why do your eyes flash, NIV 12 Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, LEB 13 that you turn your spirit against God, and you let [such] words go out of your mouth? NIV 13 so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth? LEB 14 "What [is] a human being, that he can be clean, or that [one] born of a woman can be righteous? NIV 14 "What is man, that he could be pure, or one born of woman, that he could be righteous? LEB 15 Look, he does not trust his holy ones, and [the] heavens are not clean in his eyes. NIV 15 If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, LEB 16 {How much less} he who is abominable and corrupt, a man drinking wickedness like water. NIV 16 how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil like water! LEB 17 "I will show you, listen to me; and what I have seen, I will tell-- NIV 17 "Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen, LEB 18 what wise men have told, and they have not hidden [that which is] from their ancestors, NIV 18 what wise men have declared, hiding nothing received from their fathers LEB 19 {to whom alone} the land was given, and no stranger passed through their midst. NIV 19 (to whom alone the land was given when no alien passed among them): LEB 20 "All of the wicked [one's] days he is writhing, even [through] the number of years that are laid up for the tyrant. NIV 20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless through all the years stored up for him. LEB 21 Sounds of terror [are] in his ears; in prosperity [the] destroyer will come [against] him. NIV 21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him. LEB 22 {He cannot trust that he will return} from darkness, and he himself is destined for [the] sword. NIV 22 He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword. LEB 23 "He is wandering for bread, [saying], 'Where [is it]?' He knows that a day of darkness [is] ready {at hand}. NIV 23 He wanders about--food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at hand. LEB 24 Anguish and distress terrify him; they overpower him like a king ready for the battle. NIV 24 Distress and anguish fill him with terror; they overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack, LEB 25 Because he stretched out his hand against God, and he was arrogant to Shaddai; NIV 25 because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty, LEB 26 he {stubbornly} runs against him {with his thick-bossed shield}. NIV 26 defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield. LEB 27 "Because he has covered his face with his fat and has gathered fat upon [his] loins, NIV 27 "Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh, LEB 28 {he will dwell} [in] desolate cities, in houses that they should not inhabit, which are destined for rubble. NIV 28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. LEB 29 He will not become rich, and his wealth will not endure, and their possessions will not stretch across the earth. NIV 29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. LEB 30 "He will not escape from darkness; a flame will dry up his new shoot, and by the wind of his mouth he shall be removed. NIV 30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. LEB 31 Let him not trust in emptiness--he will be deceiving himself-- for worthlessness will be his recompense. NIV 31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return. LEB 32 It will be paid in full {before his time}, and his branch will not flourish. NIV 32 Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. LEB 33 "He will shake off his unripe fruit like the vine, and he will cast off his blossom like the olive tree; NIV 33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. LEB 34 for [the] company of [the] godless [is] barren, and fire consumes the tents of those who accept bribes. NIV 34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. LEB 35 [They] conceive trouble and bring forth mischief, and their womb prepares deceit." NIV 35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit."
