Job 16

DBY 1 And Job answered and said, NIV 1 Then Job replied: DBY 2 I have heard many such things: grievous comforters are ye all. NIV 2 "I have heard many things like these; miserable comforters are you all! DBY 3 Shall words of wind have an end? or what provoketh thee that thou answerest? NIV 3 Will your long-winded speeches never end? What ails you that you keep on arguing? DBY 4 I also could speak as ye: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could join together words against you, and shake my head at you; NIV 4 I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could make fine speeches against you and shake my head at you. DBY 5 [But] I would encourage you with my mouth, and the solace of my lips should assuage [your pain]. NIV 5 But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief. DBY 6 If I speak, my pain is not assuaged; and if I forbear, what am I eased? NIV 6 "Yet if I speak, my pain is not relieved; and if I refrain, it does not go away. DBY 7 But now he hath made me weary; ... thou hast made desolate all my family; NIV 7 Surely, O God, you have worn me out; you have devastated my entire household. DBY 8 Thou hast shrivelled me up! it is become a witness; and my leanness riseth up against me, it beareth witness to my face. NIV 8 You have bound me--and it has become a witness; my gauntness rises up and testifies against me. DBY 9 His anger teareth and pursueth me; he gnasheth with his teeth against me; [as] mine adversary he sharpeneth his eyes at me. NIV 9 God assails me and tears me in his anger and gnashes his teeth at me; my opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes. DBY 10 They gape upon me with their mouth; they smite my cheeks reproachfully; they range themselves together against me. NIV 10 Men open their mouths to jeer at me; they strike my cheek in scorn and unite together against me. DBY 11 God hath delivered me over to the iniquitous man, and hurled me into the hands of the wicked. NIV 11 God has turned me over to evil men and thrown me into the clutches of the wicked. DBY 12 I was at rest, but he hath shattered me; he hath taken me by the neck and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. NIV 12 All was well with me, but he shattered me; he seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target; DBY 13 His arrows encompass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground. NIV 13 his archers surround me. Without pity, he pierces my kidneys and spills my gall on the ground. DBY 14 He breaketh me with breach upon breach; he runneth upon me like a mighty man. NIV 14 Again and again he bursts upon me; he rushes at me like a warrior. DBY 15 I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and rolled my horn in the dust. NIV 15 "I have sewed sackcloth over my skin and buried my brow in the dust. DBY 16 My face is red with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death; NIV 16 My face is red with weeping, deep shadows ring my eyes; DBY 17 Although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure. NIV 17 yet my hands have been free of violence and my prayer is pure. DBY 18 O earth, cover not my blood, and let there be no place for my cry! NIV 18 "O earth, do not cover my blood; may my cry never be laid to rest! DBY 19 Even now, behold, my Witness is in the heavens, and he that voucheth for me is in the heights. NIV 19 Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. DBY 20 My friends are my mockers; mine eye poureth out tears unto God. NIV 20 My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; DBY 21 Oh that there were arbitration for a man with God, as a son of man for his friend! NIV 21 on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend. DBY 22 For years [few] in number shall pass, -- and I shall go the way [whence] I shall not return. NIV 22 "Only a few years will pass before I go on the journey of no return.
