RSV 1 Then Eli'phaz the Te'manite answered: NIV 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: RSV 2 "Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself. NIV 2 "Can a man be of benefit to God? Can even a wise man benefit him? RSV 3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, or is it gain to him if you make your ways blameless? NIV 3 What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous? What would he gain if your ways were blameless? RSV 4 Is it for your fear of him that he reproves you, and enters into judgment with you? NIV 4 "Is it for your piety that he rebukes you and brings charges against you? RSV 5 Is not your wickedness great? There is no end to your iniquities. NIV 5 Is not your wickedness great? Are not your sins endless? RSV 6 For you have exacted pledges of your brothers for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing. NIV 6 You demanded security from your brothers for no reason; you stripped men of their clothing, leaving them naked. RSV 7 You have given no water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry. NIV 7 You gave no water to the weary and you withheld food from the hungry, RSV 8 The man with power possessed the land, and the favored man dwelt in it. NIV 8 though you were a powerful man, owning land-- an honored man, living on it. RSV 9 You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless were crushed. NIV 9 And you sent widows away empty-handed and broke the strength of the fatherless. RSV 10 Therefore snares are round about you, and sudden terror overwhelms you; NIV 10 That is why snares are all around you, why sudden peril terrifies you, RSV 11 your light is darkened, so that you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you. NIV 11 why it is so dark you cannot see, and why a flood of water covers you. RSV 12 "Is not God high in the heavens? See the highest stars, how lofty they are! NIV 12 "Is not God in the heights of heaven? And see how lofty are the highest stars! RSV 13 Therefore you say, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the deep darkness? NIV 13 Yet you say, 'What does God know? Does he judge through such darkness? RSV 14 Thick clouds enwrap him, so that he does not see, and he walks on the vault of heaven.' NIV 14 Thick clouds veil him, so he does not see us as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.' RSV 15 Will you keep to the old way which wicked men have trod? NIV 15 Will you keep to the old path that evil men have trod? RSV 16 They were snatched away before their time; their foundation was washed away. NIV 16 They were carried off before their time, their foundations washed away by a flood. RSV 17 They said to God, 'Depart from us,' and 'What can the Almighty do to us?' NIV 17 They said to God, 'Leave us alone! What can the Almighty do to us?' RSV 18 Yet he filled their houses with good things--but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. NIV 18 Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things, so I stand aloof from the counsel of the wicked. RSV 19 The righteous see it and are glad; the innocent laugh them to scorn, NIV 19 "The righteous see their ruin and rejoice; the innocent mock them, saying, RSV 20 saying, 'Surely our adversaries are cut off, and what they left the fire has consumed.' NIV 20 'Surely our foes are destroyed, and fire devours their wealth.' RSV 21 "Agree with God, and be at peace; thereby good will come to you. NIV 21 "Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you. RSV 22 Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. NIV 22 Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart. RSV 23 If you return to the Almighty and humble yourself, if you remove unrighteousness far from your tents, NIV 23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored: If you remove wickedness far from your tent RSV 24 if you lay gold in the dust, and gold of Ophir among the stones of the torrent bed, NIV 24 and assign your nuggets to the dust, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines, RSV 25 and if the Almighty is your gold, and your precious silver; NIV 25 then the Almighty will be your gold, the choicest silver for you. RSV 26 then you will delight yourself in the Almighty, and lift up your face to God. NIV 26 Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God. RSV 27 You will make your prayer to him, and he will hear you; and you will pay your vows. NIV 27 You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows. RSV 28 You will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways. NIV 28 What you decide on will be done, and light will shine on your ways. RSV 29 For God abases the proud, but he saves the lowly. NIV 29 When men are brought low and you say, 'Lift them up!' then he will save the downcast. RSV 30 He delivers the innocent man; you will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands." NIV 30 He will deliver even one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands."
