Job 33

NRS 1 "But now, hear my speech, O Job, and listen to all my words. NIV 1 "But now, Job, listen to my words; pay attention to everything I say. NRS 2 See, I open my mouth; the tongue in my mouth speaks. NIV 2 I am about to open my mouth; my words are on the tip of my tongue. NRS 3 My words declare the uprightness of my heart, and what my lips know they speak sincerely. NIV 3 My words come from an upright heart; my lips sincerely speak what I know. NRS 4 The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. NIV 4 The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life. NRS 5 Answer me, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand. NIV 5 Answer me then, if you can; prepare yourself and confront me. NRS 6 See, before God I am as you are; I too was formed from a piece of clay. NIV 6 I am just like you before God; I too have been taken from clay. NRS 7 No fear of me need terrify you; my pressure will not be heavy on you. NIV 7 No fear of me should alarm you, nor should my hand be heavy upon you. NRS 8 "Surely, you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the sound of your words. NIV 8 "But you have said in my hearing-- I heard the very words-- NRS 9 You say, "I am clean, without transgression; I am pure, and there is no iniquity in me. NIV 9 'I am pure and without sin; I am clean and free from guilt. NRS 10 Look, he finds occasions against me, he counts me as his enemy; NIV 10 Yet God has found fault with me; he considers me his enemy. NRS 11 he puts my feet in the stocks, and watches all my paths.' NIV 11 He fastens my feet in shackles; he keeps close watch on all my paths.' NRS 12 "But in this you are not right. I will answer you: God is greater than any mortal. NIV 12 "But I tell you, in this you are not right, for God is greater than man. NRS 13 Why do you contend against him, saying, "He will answer none of my words'? NIV 13 Why do you complain to him that he answers none of man's words ? NRS 14 For God speaks in one way, and in two, though people do not perceive it. NIV 14 For God does speak--now one way, now another-- though man may not perceive it. NRS 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on mortals, while they slumber on their beds, NIV 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men as they slumber in their beds, NRS 16 then he opens their ears, and terrifies them with warnings, NIV 16 he may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings, NRS 17 that he may turn them aside from their deeds, and keep them from pride, NIV 17 to turn man from wrongdoing and keep him from pride, NRS 18 to spare their souls from the Pit, their lives from traversing the River. NIV 18 to preserve his soul from the pit, his life from perishing by the sword. NRS 19 They are also chastened with pain upon their beds, and with continual strife in their bones, NIV 19 Or a man may be chastened on a bed of pain with constant distress in his bones, NRS 20 so that their lives loathe bread, and their appetites dainty food. NIV 20 so that his very being finds food repulsive and his soul loathes the choicest meal. NRS 21 Their flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen; and their bones, once invisible, now stick out. NIV 21 His flesh wastes away to nothing, and his bones, once hidden, now stick out. NRS 22 Their souls draw near the Pit, and their lives to those who bring death. NIV 22 His soul draws near to the pit, and his life to the messengers of death. NRS 23 Then, if there should be for one of them an angel, a mediator, one of a thousand, one who declares a person upright, NIV 23 "Yet if there is an angel on his side as a mediator, one out of a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him, NRS 24 and he is gracious to that person, and says, "Deliver him from going down into the Pit; I have found a ransom; NIV 24 to be gracious to him and say, 'Spare him from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for him'-- NRS 25 let his flesh become fresh with youth; let him return to the days of his youthful vigor'; NIV 25 then his flesh is renewed like a child's; it is restored as in the days of his youth. NRS 26 then he prays to God, and is accepted by him, he comes into his presence with joy, and God repays him for his righteousness. NIV 26 He prays to God and finds favor with him, he sees God's face and shouts for joy; he is restored by God to his righteous state. NRS 27 That person sings to others and says, "I sinned, and perverted what was right, and it was not paid back to me. NIV 27 Then he comes to men and says, 'I sinned, and perverted what was right, but I did not get what I deserved. NRS 28 He has redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit, and my life shall see the light.' NIV 28 He redeemed my soul from going down to the pit, and I will live to enjoy the light.' NRS 29 "God indeed does all these things, twice, three times, with mortals, NIV 29 "God does all these things to a man-- twice, even three times-- NRS 30 to bring back their souls from the Pit, so that they may see the light of life. NIV 30 to turn back his soul from the pit, that the light of life may shine on him. NRS 31 Pay heed, Job, listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. NIV 31 "Pay attention, Job, and listen to me; be silent, and I will speak. NRS 32 If you have anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you. NIV 32 If you have anything to say, answer me; speak up, for I want you to be cleared. NRS 33 If not, listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom." NIV 33 But if not, then listen to me; be silent, and I will teach you wisdom."
