Job 34

CEB 1 Elihu continued: NIV 1 Then Elihu said: CEB 2 Hear my words, wise ones; knowledgeable ones, listen to me, NIV 2 "Hear my words, you wise men; listen to me, you men of learning. CEB 3 for the ear tests words like the palate tastes food. NIV 3 For the ear tests words as the tongue tastes food. CEB 4 Let's choose for us what's right; let's determine among ourselves what's good; NIV 4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn together what is good. CEB 5 for Job has said, "I'm innocent; God has denied my just cause; NIV 5 "Job says, 'I am innocent, but God denies me justice. CEB 6 because of my cause I'm thought a liar; my wound from an arrow is incurable, even though I didn't rebel." NIV 6 Although I am right, I am considered a liar; although I am guiltless, his arrow inflicts an incurable wound.' CEB 7 Who is a man like Job? He drinks mockery like water NIV 7 What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water? CEB 8 and travels a path with wrongdoers, walking with evil persons. NIV 8 He keeps company with evildoers; he associates with wicked men. CEB 9 Indeed he said, "No one is rewarded for delighting in God." NIV 9 For he says, 'It profits a man nothing when he tries to please God.' CEB 10 Therefore, intelligent ones, hear me; far be it from God to do evil and the Almighty to sin, NIV 10 "So listen to me, you men of understanding. Far be it from God to do evil, from the Almighty to do wrong. CEB 11 for he repays people based on what they do, paying back everyone according to their ways. NIV 11 He repays a man for what he has done; he brings upon him what his conduct deserves. CEB 12 Surely God doesn't act wickedly; the Almighty doesn't distort justice. NIV 12 It is unthinkable that God would do wrong, that the Almighty would pervert justice. CEB 13 Who placed earth in his care, and who gave him dominion over the entire world? NIV 13 Who appointed him over the earth? Who put him in charge of the whole world? CEB 14 If he were to decide to do it— to gather his spirit and breath back to himself— NIV 14 If it were his intention and he withdrew his spirit and breath, CEB 15 all flesh would die together, and humans would return to dust. NIV 15 all mankind would perish together and man would return to the dust. CEB 16 But if you have understanding, hear this; pay attention to the sound of my words. NIV 16 "If you have understanding, hear this; listen to what I say. CEB 17 Will one who hates justice rule; will you condemn the most righteous one? NIV 17 Can he who hates justice govern? Will you condemn the just and mighty One? CEB 18 Will you say to a king, "Worthless!" to royalty, "Evil!" NIV 18 Is he not the One who says to kings, 'You are worthless,' and to nobles, 'You are wicked,' CEB 19 Who shows no favor to princes nor regards the rich over the poor, for they are all the work of God's hands? NIV 19 who shows no partiality to princes and does not favor the rich over the poor, for they are all the work of his hands? CEB 20 In the middle of the night they suddenly die; people are shaken and pass away. The mighty are removed, not by a human hand. NIV 20 They die in an instant, in the middle of the night; the people are shaken and they pass away; the mighty are removed without human hand. CEB 21 God's eyes are on human ways, and he sees all their steps. NIV 21 "His eyes are on the ways of men; he sees their every step. CEB 22 There's no darkness, no deep darkness, where evildoers can hide themselves; NIV 22 There is no dark place, no deep shadow, where evildoers can hide. CEB 23 surely no time is set for a person to appear before God in judgment. NIV 23 God has no need to examine men further, that they should come before him for judgment. CEB 24 He shatters the mighty without examining them; makes others take their place. NIV 24 Without inquiry he shatters the mighty and sets up others in their place. CEB 25 Thus he regards their deeds, overturns them at night, and they are crushed. NIV 25 Because he takes note of their deeds, he overthrows them in the night and they are crushed. CEB 26 He strikes them because of their wickedness at a place where people can see it. NIV 26 He punishes them for their wickedness where everyone can see them, CEB 27 Because they turned from following him and didn't value all his ways, NIV 27 because they turned from following him and had no regard for any of his ways. CEB 28 causing the cry of the poor to reach him, he hears the cry of the afflicted. NIV 28 They caused the cry of the poor to come before him, so that he heard the cry of the needy. CEB 29 Still, if he remains quiet, who can condemn; if he hides his face, who can see him? NIV 29 But if he remains silent, who can condemn him? If he hides his face, who can see him? Yet he is over man and nation alike, CEB 30 He prevents a lawless person from ruling, from capturing people. NIV 30 to keep a godless man from ruling, from laying snares for the people. CEB 31 Has Job said to God, "I have borne punishment; I won't sin again? NIV 31 "Suppose a man says to God, 'I am guilty but will offend no more. CEB 32 You teach me what I can't see; if I've sinned, I won't do it again." NIV 32 Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do so again.' CEB 33 Will he repay you because you reject sin, for you must choose, not I; declare what you know. NIV 33 Should God then reward you on your terms, when you refuse to repent? You must decide, not I; so tell me what you know. CEB 34 Smart people say to me, the wise who hear me, NIV 34 "Men of understanding declare, wise men who hear me say to me, CEB 35 "Job speaks without knowledge; his words aren't astute." NIV 35 'Job speaks without knowledge; his words lack insight.' CEB 36 I wish Job would be tested to the limit because he responds like evil people. NIV 36 Oh, that Job might be tested to the utmost for answering like a wicked man! CEB 37 He adds rebellion to his sin; mocks us openly and adds to his words against God. NIV 37 To his sin he adds rebellion; scornfully he claps his hands among us and multiplies his words against God."
