Job 35

CEB 1 Elihu continued: NIV 1 Then Elihu said: CEB 2 Do you think it right? You say, "I'm more just than God." NIV 2 "Do you think this is just? You say, 'I will be cleared by God. ' CEB 3 Yet you ask, "What does it benefit you? What have I gained by avoiding sin?" NIV 3 Yet you ask him, 'What profit is it to me, and what do I gain by not sinning?' CEB 4 I'll answer you, and your friends along with you. NIV 4 "I would like to reply to you and to your friends with you. CEB 5 Look at the heavens and see; scan the clouds high over you. NIV 5 Look up at the heavens and see; gaze at the clouds so high above you. CEB 6 If you've sinned, how have you affected God? Your offenses have multiplied; what have you done to him? NIV 6 If you sin, how does that affect him? If your sins are many, what does that do to him? CEB 7 If you are righteous, what do you give to him? Or what does he receive from your hand? NIV 7 If you are righteous, what do you give to him, or what does he receive from your hand? CEB 8 Your evil affects others like you, and your righteousness affects fellow human beings. NIV 8 Your wickedness affects only a man like yourself, and your righteousness only the sons of men. CEB 9 People cry out because of heavy oppression; shout under the power of the mighty. NIV 9 "Men cry out under a load of oppression; they plead for relief from the arm of the powerful. CEB 10 But no one says, "Where is God my maker; who gives songs in the night; NIV 10 But no one says, 'Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night, CEB 11 who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth, makes us wiser than the birds in the sky?" NIV 11 who teaches more to us than to the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of the air?' CEB 12 Then they cry out; but he doesn't answer, because of the pride of the wicked. NIV 12 He does not answer when men cry out because of the arrogance of the wicked. CEB 13 God certainly doesn't respond to a deceitful cry; the Almighty doesn't pay attention to it. NIV 13 Indeed, God does not listen to their empty plea; the Almighty pays no attention to it. CEB 14 Although you say that you don't see him, the case is before him; so wait anxiously for him. NIV 14 How much less, then, will he listen when you say that you do not see him, that your case is before him and you must wait for him, CEB 15 Even though his anger is now held back, a person doesn't know it's only delayed. NIV 15 and further, that his anger never punishes and he does not take the least notice of wickedness. CEB 16 So Job mouths emptiness; he piles up ignorant words. NIV 16 So Job opens his mouth with empty talk; without knowledge he multiplies words."
