RSV 1 Then Eli'phaz the Te'manite answered: NIV 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: RSV 2 "If one ventures a word with you, will you be offended? Yet who can keep from speaking? NIV 2 "If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking? RSV 3 Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. NIV 3 Think how you have instructed many, how you have strengthened feeble hands. RSV 4 Your words have upheld him who was stumbling, and you have made firm the feeble knees. NIV 4 Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees. RSV 5 But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed. NIV 5 But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed. RSV 6 Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope? NIV 6 Should not your piety be your confidence and your blameless ways your hope? RSV 7 "Think now, who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off? NIV 7 "Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed? RSV 8 As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same. NIV 8 As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it. RSV 9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed. NIV 9 At the breath of God they are destroyed; at the blast of his anger they perish. RSV 10 The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions, are broken. NIV 10 The lions may roar and growl, yet the teeth of the great lions are broken. RSV 11 The strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered. NIV 11 The lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered. RSV 12 "Now a word was brought to me stealthily, my ear received the whisper of it. A form stood before my eyes, and I heard a hushed voice: RSV 17 'Can mortal man be righteous before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker? NIV 17 'Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can a man be more pure than his Maker? RSV 18 Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error; NIV 18 If God places no trust in his servants, if he charges his angels with error, RSV 19 how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth. NIV 19 how much more those who live in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who are crushed more readily than a moth! RSV 20 Between morning and evening they are destroyed; they perish for ever without any regarding it. NIV 20 Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces; unnoticed, they perish forever. RSV 21 If their tent-cord is plucked up within them, do they not die, and that without wisdom?' NIV 21 Are not the cords of their tent pulled up, so that they die without wisdom?'
