Job 41

GNT 1 Can you catch Leviathan with a fishhook or tie his tongue down with a rope? NIV 1 "Can you pull in the leviathan with a fishhook or tie down his tongue with a rope? GNT 2 Can you put a rope through his snout or put a hook through his jaws? NIV 2 Can you put a cord through his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook? GNT 3 Will he beg you to let him go? Will he plead with you for mercy? NIV 3 Will he keep begging you for mercy? Will he speak to you with gentle words? GNT 4 Will he make an agreement with you and promise to serve you forever? NIV 4 Will he make an agreement with you for you to take him as your slave for life? GNT 5 Will you tie him like a pet bird, like something to amuse your servant women? NIV 5 Can you make a pet of him like a bird or put him on a leash for your girls? GNT 6 Will fishermen bargain over him? Will merchants cut him up to sell? NIV 6 Will traders barter for him? Will they divide him up among the merchants? GNT 7 Can you fill his hide with fishing spears or pierce his head with a harpoon? NIV 7 Can you fill his hide with harpoons or his head with fishing spears? GNT 8 Touch him once and you'll never try it again; you'll never forget the fight! NIV 8 If you lay a hand on him, you will remember the struggle and never do it again! GNT 9 Anyone who sees Leviathan loses courage and falls to the ground. NIV 9 Any hope of subduing him is false; the mere sight of him is overpowering. GNT 10 When he is aroused, he is fierce; no one would dare to stand before him. NIV 10 No one is fierce enough to rouse him. Who then is able to stand against me? GNT 11 Who can attack him and still be safe? No one in all the world can do it. NIV 11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me. GNT 12 Let me tell you about Leviathan's legs and describe how great and strong he is. NIV 12 "I will not fail to speak of his limbs, his strength and his graceful form. GNT 13 No one can tear off his outer coat or pierce the armor he wears. NIV 13 Who can strip off his outer coat? Who would approach him with a bridle? GNT 14 Who can make him open his jaws, ringed with those terrifying teeth? NIV 14 Who dares open the doors of his mouth, ringed about with his fearsome teeth? GNT 15 His back is made of rows of shields, fastened together and hard as stone. NIV 15 His back has rows of shields tightly sealed together; GNT 16 Each one is joined so tight to the next, not even a breath can come between. NIV 16 each is so close to the next that no air can pass between. GNT 17 They all are fastened so firmly together that nothing can ever pull them apart. NIV 17 They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted. GNT 18 Light flashes when he sneezes, and his eyes glow like the rising sun. NIV 18 His snorting throws out flashes of light; his eyes are like the rays of dawn. GNT 19 Flames blaze from his mouth, and streams of sparks fly out. NIV 19 Firebrands stream from his mouth; sparks of fire shoot out. GNT 20 Smoke comes pouring out of his nose, like smoke from weeds burning under a pot. NIV 20 Smoke pours from his nostrils as from a boiling pot over a fire of reeds. GNT 21 His breath starts fires burning; flames leap out of his mouth. NIV 21 His breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from his mouth. GNT 22 His neck is so powerful that all who meet him are terrified. NIV 22 Strength resides in his neck; dismay goes before him. GNT 23 There is not a weak spot in his skin; it is as hard and unyielding as iron. NIV 23 The folds of his flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable. GNT 24 His stony heart is without fear, as unyielding and hard as a millstone. NIV 24 His chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone. GNT 25 When he rises up, even the strongest are frightened; they are helpless with fear. NIV 25 When he rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before his thrashing. GNT 26 There is no sword that can wound him; no spear or arrow or lance that can harm him. NIV 26 The sword that reaches him has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin. GNT 27 For him iron is as flimsy as straw, and bronze as soft as rotten wood. NIV 27 Iron he treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood. GNT 28 There is no arrow that can make him run; rocks thrown at him are like bits of straw. NIV 28 Arrows do not make him flee; slingstones are like chaff to him. GNT 29 To him a club is a piece of straw, and he laughs when men throw spears. NIV 29 A club seems to him but a piece of straw; he laughs at the rattling of the lance. GNT 30 The scales on his belly are like jagged pieces of pottery; they tear up the muddy ground like a threshing sledge. NIV 30 His undersides are jagged potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge. GNT 31 He churns up the sea like boiling water and makes it bubble like a pot of oil. NIV 31 He makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment. GNT 32 He leaves a shining path behind him and turns the sea to white foam. NIV 32 Behind him he leaves a glistening wake; one would think the deep had white hair. GNT 33 There is nothing on earth to compare with him; he is a creature that has no fear. NIV 33 Nothing on earth is his equal-- a creature without fear. GNT 34 He looks down on even the proudest animals; he is king of all wild beasts. NIV 34 He looks down on all that are haughty; he is king over all that are proud."
