Job 5

NLT 1 "You may cry for help, but no one listens. You may turn to the angels, but they give you no help. NIV 1 "Call if you will, but who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn? NLT 2 Surely resentment destroys the fool, and jealousy kills the simple. NIV 2 Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple. NLT 3 From my experience, I know that fools who turn from God may be successful for the moment, but then comes sudden disaster. NIV 3 I myself have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house was cursed. NLT 4 Their children are abandoned far from help, with no one to defend them. NIV 4 His children are far from safety, crushed in court without a defender. NLT 5 Their harvests are stolen, and their wealth satisfies the thirst of many others, not themselves! NIV 5 The hungry consume his harvest, taking it even from among thorns, and the thirsty pant after his wealth. NLT 6 But evil does not spring from the soil, and trouble does not sprout from the earth. NIV 6 For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground. NLT 7 People are born for trouble as predictably as sparks fly upward from a fire." NIV 7 Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward. NLT 8 "My advice to you is this: Go to God and present your case to him. NIV 8 "But if it were I, I would appeal to God; I would lay my cause before him. NLT 9 For he does great works too marvelous to understand. He performs miracles without number. NIV 9 He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted. NLT 10 He gives rain for the earth. He sends water for the fields. NIV 10 He bestows rain on the earth; he sends water upon the countryside. NLT 11 He gives prosperity to the poor and humble, and he takes sufferers to safety. NIV 11 The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety. NLT 12 He frustrates the plans of the crafty, so their efforts will not succeed. NIV 12 He thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success. NLT 13 He catches those who think they are wise in their own cleverness, so that their cunning schemes are thwarted. NIV 13 He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are swept away. NLT 14 They grope in the daylight as though they were blind; they see no better in the daytime than at night. NIV 14 Darkness comes upon them in the daytime; at noon they grope as in the night. NLT 15 He rescues the poor from the cutting words of the strong. He saves them from the clutches of the powerful. NIV 15 He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from the clutches of the powerful. NLT 16 And so at last the poor have hope, and the fangs of the wicked are broken." NIV 16 So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth. NLT 17 "But consider the joy of those corrected by God! Do not despise the chastening of the Almighty when you sin. NIV 17 "Blessed is the man whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. NLT 18 For though he wounds, he also bandages. He strikes, but his hands also heal. NIV 18 For he wounds, but he also binds up; he injures, but his hands also heal. NLT 19 He will rescue you again and again so that no evil can touch you. NIV 19 From six calamities he will rescue you; in seven no harm will befall you. NLT 20 He will save you from death in time of famine, from the power of the sword in time of war. NIV 20 In famine he will ransom you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword. NLT 21 You will be safe from slander and will have no fear of destruction when it comes. NIV 21 You will be protected from the lash of the tongue, and need not fear when destruction comes. NLT 22 You will laugh at destruction and famine; wild animals will not terrify you. NIV 22 You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the beasts of the earth. NLT 23 You will be at peace with the stones of the field, and its wild animals will be at peace with you. NIV 23 For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you. NLT 24 You will know that your home is kept safe. When you visit your pastures, nothing will be missing. NIV 24 You will know that your tent is secure; you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing. NLT 25 Your children will be many; your descendants will be as plentiful as grass! NIV 25 You will know that your children will be many, and your descendants like the grass of the earth. NLT 26 You will live to a good old age. You will not be harvested until the proper time!" NIV 26 You will come to the grave in full vigor, like sheaves gathered in season. NLT 27 "We have found from experience that all this is true. Listen to my counsel, and apply it to yourself." NIV 27 "We have examined this, and it is true. So hear it and apply it to yourself."
