1 Y respondió Job, y dijo:

Then Job replied:
2 Ciertamente yo conozco que es así; ¿y cómo se justificará el hombre con Dios?

“Indeed, I know that this is true. But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?
3 Si quisiere contender con él, no le podrá responder a una <I>cosa</I> de mil.

Though they wished to dispute with him, they could not answer him one time out of a thousand.
4 El es sabio de corazón, y fuerte en fuerza, ¿quién se endureció contra él, y quedó en paz?

His wisdom is profound, his power is vast. Who has resisted him and come out unscathed?
5 Que arranca los montes con su furor, y no conocen quién los trastornó;

He moves mountains without their knowing it and overturns them in his anger.
6 que remueve la tierra de su lugar, y hace temblar sus columnas;

He shakes the earth from its place and makes its pillars tremble.
7 que manda al sol, y no sale; y sella las estrellas.

He speaks to the sun and it does not shine; he seals off the light of the stars.
8 El solo extiende los cielos, y anda sobre las alturas del mar.

He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.
9 El que hizo la Osa, y el Orión, y las Pléyades, y los lugares secretos del mediodía;

He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south.
10 el que hace cosas grandes e incomprensibles, y maravillosas, sin número.

He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.
11 He aquí que él pasará delante de mí, y yo no lo veré; y pasará, y no lo entenderé.

When he passes me, I cannot see him; when he goes by, I cannot perceive him.
12 He aquí, arrebatará; ¿quién le hará restituir? ¿Quién le dirá: Qué haces?

If he snatches away, who can stop him? Who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’
13 Dios no tornará atrás su ira, y debajo de él se encorvan los que ayudan a la soberbia.

God does not restrain his anger; even the cohorts of Rahab cowered at his feet.
14 ¿Cuánto menos le responderé yo, y eligiré mis palabras con él?

“How then can I dispute with him? How can I find words to argue with him?
15 Que aunque yo sea justo, no responderé; <I>antes</I> habré de rogar a mi juez.

Though I were innocent, I could not answer him; I could only plead with my Judge for mercy.
16 Que si yo le invocase, y él me respondiese, aún no creeré que haya escuchado mi voz.

Even if I summoned him and he responded, I do not believe he would give me a hearing.
17 Porque me ha quebrado con tempestad, y ha aumentado mis heridas sin causa.

He would crush me with a storm and multiply my wounds for no reason.
18 <I>Que aún</I> no me ha concedido que tome mi aliento; mas me ha llenado de amarguras.

He would not let me catch my breath but would overwhelm me with misery.
19 Si <I>habláramos</I> de <I>su</I> potencia, fuerte por cierto es; si de <I>su</I> juicio, ¿quién me emplazará?

If it is a matter of strength, he is mighty! And if it is a matter of justice, who can challenge him ?
20 Si yo me justificare, me condenará mi boca; <I>si me predicare</I> perfecto, él me hará inicuo.

Even if I were innocent, my mouth would condemn me; if I were blameless, it would pronounce me guilty.
21 <I>Si yo me predicare</I> imperfecto, no conozco mi alma; condenaré mi vida.

“Although I am blameless, I have no concern for myself; I despise my own life.
22 Una cosa resta <I>es a saber</I> que yo diga: Al perfecto y al impío él los consume.

It is all the same; that is why I say, ‘He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.’
23 Si <I>es</I> azote, mate de presto, y no se ría de la prueba de los inocentes.

When a scourge brings sudden death, he mocks the despair of the innocent.
24 La tierra es entregada en manos de los impíos, y él cubre el rostro de sus jueces. Si no <I>es él el que lo hace</I> , ¿quién es? ¿Dónde está?

When a land falls into the hands of the wicked, he blindfolds its judges. If it is not he, then who is it?
25 Mis días han sido más ligeros que un correo; huyeron, y nunca vieron bien.

“My days are swifter than a runner; they fly away without a glimpse of joy.
26 Pasaron con los navíos de Ebeh; o como el águila que se arroja a la presa.

They skim past like boats of papyrus, like eagles swooping down on their prey.
27 Si digo: Quiero olvidar mi queja, dejaré mi aburrimiento, y me esforzaré.

If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will change my expression, and smile,’
28 Temo todos mis trabajos; sé que no me perdonarás.

I still dread all my sufferings, for I know you will not hold me innocent.
29 <I>Si</I> yo soy impío, ¿para qué trabajaré en vano?

Since I am already found guilty, why should I struggle in vain?
30 Aunque me lave con aguas de nieve, y aunque limpie mis manos con la <I>misma</I> limpieza,

Even if I washed myself with soap and my hands with cleansing powder,
31 aún me hundirás en el hoyo; y mis propios vestidos me abominarán.

you would plunge me into a slime pit so that even my clothes would detest me.
32 Porque no <I>es</I> hombre como yo, para que yo le responda, y vengamos juntamente a juicio.

“He is not a mere mortal like me that I might answer him, that we might confront each other in court.
33 No hay entre nosotros árbitro que ponga su mano sobre nosotros ambos.

If only there were someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together,
34 Quite de sobre mí su verdugo, y su terror no me perturbe.
34
someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more.
35 Y hablaré, y no le temeré; porque en este estado no estoy en mí.

Then I would speak up without fear of him, but as it now stands with me, I cannot.
