John 1

BBE 1 From the first he was the Word, and the Word was in relation with God and was God. NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. BBE 2 This Word was from the first in relation with God. NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. BBE 3 All things came into existence through him, and without him nothing was. NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. BBE 4 What came into existence in him was life, and the life was the light of men. NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. BBE 5 And the light goes on shining in the dark; it is not overcome by the dark. NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. BBE 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. NIV 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. BBE 7 He came for witness, to give witness about the light, so that all men might have faith through him. NIV 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. BBE 8 He himself was not the light: he was sent to give witness about the light. NIV 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. BBE 9 The true light, which gives light to every man, was then coming into the world. NIV 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. BBE 10 He was in the world, the world which came into being through him, but the world had no knowledge of him. NIV 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. BBE 11 He came to the things which were his and his people did not take him to their hearts. NIV 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. BBE 12 To all those who did so take him, however, he gave the right of becoming children of God--that is, to those who had faith in his name: NIV 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- BBE 13 Whose birth was from God and not from blood, or from an impulse of the flesh and man's desire. NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. BBE 14 And so the Word became flesh and took a place among us for a time; and we saw his glory--such glory as is given to an only son by his father--saw it to be true and full of grace. NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. BBE 15 John gave witness about him, crying, This is he of whom I said, He who is coming after me is put over me because he was in existence before me. NIV 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " BBE 16 From his full measure we have all been given grace on grace. NIV 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. BBE 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and the true way of life are ours through Jesus Christ. NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. BBE 18 No man has seen God at any time; the only Son, who is on the breast of the Father, he has made clear what God is. NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known. BBE 19 And this is the witness of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him with the question, Who are you? NIV 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. BBE 20 He said quite openly and straightforwardly, I am not the Christ. NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. " BBE 21 And they said to him, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not. Are you the prophet? And his answer was, I am not. NIV 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." BBE 22 So they said to him, Who are you then? We have to give some answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself? NIV 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?" BBE 23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the waste land, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet. NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' " BBE 24 Those who had been sent came from the Pharisees. NIV 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent BBE 25 And they put this question to him, saying, Why then are you giving baptism if you are not the Christ, or Elijah, or the prophet? NIV 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" BBE 26 John's answer was: I give baptism with water; but there is one among you of whom you have no knowledge; NIV 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. BBE 27 It is he who is coming after me; I am not good enough to undo his shoes. NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." BBE 28 These things took place at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was giving baptism. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. BBE 29 The day after, John sees Jesus coming to him and says, See, here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! BBE 30 This is he of whom I said, One is coming after me who is put over me because he was in existence before me. NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' BBE 31 I myself had no knowledge of him, but I came giving baptism with water so that he might be seen openly by Israel. NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." BBE 32 And John gave this witness, saying, I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove and resting on him. NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. BBE 33 I had no knowledge who he was, but he who sent me to give baptism with water said to me, The one on whom you see the Spirit coming down and resting, it is he who gives baptism with the Holy Spirit. NIV 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' BBE 34 This I saw myself and my witness is that he is the Son of God. NIV 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God." BBE 35 The day after, John was there again with two of his disciples; NIV 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. BBE 36 And looking at Jesus while he was walking he said, See, there is the Lamb of God! NIV 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" BBE 37 Hearing what he said, the two disciples went after Jesus. NIV 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. BBE 38 And Jesus, turning round, saw them coming after him and said to them, What are you looking for? They said to him, Rabbi (which is to say, Master), where are you living? NIV 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" BBE 39 He said to them, Come and see. They went with him then and saw where he was living; and they were with him all that day: it was then about the tenth hour of the day. NIV 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. BBE 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two men who, hearing what John said, went after Jesus. NIV 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. BBE 41 Early in the morning he came across his brother and said to him, We have made discovery! It is the Messiah! (which is to say, the Christ). NIV 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). BBE 42 And he took him to Jesus. Looking at him fixedly Jesus said, You are Simon, the son of John; your name will be Cephas (which is to say, Peter). NIV 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter ). BBE 43 The day after this, Jesus had a desire to go into Galilee. He came across Philip and said to him, Come and be my disciple. NIV 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." BBE 44 Now Philip's town was Beth-saida, where Andrew and Peter came from. NIV 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. BBE 45 Philip came across Nathanael and said to him, We have made a discovery! It is he of whom Moses, in the law, and the prophets were writing, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. NIV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." BBE 46 Nazareth! said Nathanael, Is it possible for any good to come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. NIV 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. BBE 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and said of him, See, here is a true son of Israel in whom there is nothing false. NIV 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false." BBE 48 Nathanael said to him, Where did you get knowledge of me? In answer Jesus said, Before Philip was talking with you, while you were still under the fig-tree, I saw you. NIV 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." BBE 49 Nathanael said to him, Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are King of Israel! NIV 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." BBE 50 In answer Jesus said to him, You have faith because I said to you, I saw you under the fig-tree. You will see greater things than these. NIV 50 Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that." BBE 51 And he said to him, Truly I say to you all, You will see heaven opening and God's angels going up and coming down on the Son of man. NIV 51 He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
