GOD'S WORD Translation

New International Version

John 1

GW 1 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. GW 2 He was already with God in the beginning. NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. GW 3 Everything came into existence through him. Not one thing that exists was made without him. NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. GW 4 He was the source of life, and that life was the light for humanity. NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. GW 5 The light shines in the dark, and the dark has never extinguished it. NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. GW 6 God sent a man named John to be his messenger. NIV 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. GW 7 John came to declare the truth about the light so that everyone would become believers through his message. NIV 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. GW 8 John was not the light, but he came to declare the truth about the light. NIV 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. GW 9 The real light, which shines on everyone, was coming into the world. NIV 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. GW 10 He was in the world, and the world came into existence through him. Yet, the world didn't recognize him. NIV 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. GW 11 He went to his own people, and his own people didn't accept him. NIV 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. GW 12 However, he gave the right to become God's children to everyone who believed in him. NIV 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- GW 13 These people didn't become God's children in a physical way--from a human impulse or from a husband's desire [to have a child]. They were born from God. NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. GW 14 The Word became human and lived among us. We saw his glory. It was the glory that the Father shares with his only Son, a glory full of kindness and truth. NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. GW 15 (John declared the truth about him when he said loudly, "This is the person about whom I said, 'The one who comes after me was before me because he existed before I did.'") NIV 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " GW 16 Each of us has received one gift after another because of all that the Word is. NIV 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. GW 17 The Teachings were given through Moses, but kindness and truth came into existence through Jesus Christ. NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. GW 18 No one has ever seen God. God's only Son, the one who is closest to the Father's heart, has made him known. NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known. GW 19 This was John's answer when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" NIV 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. GW 20 John didn't refuse to answer. He told them clearly, "I'm not the Messiah." NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. " GW 21 They asked him, "Well, are you Elijah?" John answered, "No, I'm not." Then they asked, "Are you the prophet?" John replied, "No." NIV 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." GW 22 So they asked him, "Who are you? Tell us so that we can take an answer back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" NIV 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?" GW 23 John said, "I'm a voice crying out in the desert, 'Make the way for the Lord straight,' as the prophet Isaiah said." NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' " GW 24 Some of those who had been sent were Pharisees. NIV 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent GW 25 They asked John, "Why do you baptize if you're not the Messiah or Elijah or the prophet?" NIV 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" GW 26 John answered them, "I baptize with water. Someone you don't know is standing among you. NIV 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. GW 27 He's the one who comes after me. I am not worthy to untie his sandal strap." NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." GW 28 This happened in Bethany on the east side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. GW 29 John saw Jesus coming toward him the next day and said, "Look! This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! GW 30 He is the one I spoke about when I said, 'A man who comes after me was before me because he existed before I did.' NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' GW 31 I didn't know who he was. However, I came to baptize with water to show him to the people of Israel." NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." GW 32 John said, "I saw the Spirit come down as a dove from heaven and stay on him. NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. GW 33 I didn't know who he was. But God, who sent me to baptize with water, had told me, 'When you see the Spirit come down and stay on someone, you'll know that person is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' NIV 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' GW 34 I have seen this and have declared that this is the Son of God." NIV 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God." GW 35 The next day John was standing with two of his disciples. NIV 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. GW 36 John saw Jesus walk by. John said, "Look! This is the Lamb of God." NIV 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" GW 37 When the two disciples heard John say this, they followed Jesus. NIV 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. GW 38 Jesus turned around and saw them following him. He asked them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which means "teacher"), "where are you staying?" NIV 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" GW 39 Jesus told them, "Come, and you will see." So they went to see where he was staying and spent the rest of that day with him. It was about ten o'clock in the morning. NIV 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. GW 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two disciples who heard John and followed Jesus. NIV 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. GW 41 Andrew at once found his brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah" (which means "Christ"). NIV 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). GW 42 Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at Simon and said, "You are Simon, son of John. Your name will be Cephas" (which means "Peter"). NIV 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter ). GW 43 The next day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee. He found Philip and told him, "Follow me!" NIV 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." GW 44 (Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.) NIV 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. GW 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the man whom Moses wrote about in his teachings and whom the prophets wrote about. He is Jesus, son of Joseph, from the city of Nazareth." NIV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." GW 46 Nathanael said to Philip, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip told him, "Come and see!" NIV 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. GW 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and remarked, "Here is a true Israelite who is sincere." NIV 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false." GW 48 Nathanael asked Jesus, "How do you know anything about me?" Jesus answered him, "I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you." NIV 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." GW 49 Nathanael said to Jesus, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the king of Israel!" NIV 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." GW 50 Jesus replied, "You believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that." NIV 50 Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that." GW 51 Jesus said to Nathanael, "I can guarantee this truth: You will see the sky open and God's angels going up and coming down to the Son of Man." NIV 51 He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
