John 1

NCV 1 In the beginning there was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. NCV 2 He was with God in the beginning. NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. NCV 3 All things were made by him, and nothing was made without him. NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. NCV 4 In him there was life, and that life was the light of all people. NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. NCV 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overpowered it. NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. NCV 6 There was a man named Johnn who was sent by God. NIV 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. NCV 7 He came to tell people the truth about the Light so that through him all people could hear about the Light and believe. NIV 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. NCV 8 John was not the Light, but he came to tell people the truth about the Light. NIV 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. NCV 9 The true Light that gives light to all was coming into the world! NIV 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. NCV 10 The Word was in the world, and the world was made by him, but the world did not know him. NIV 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. NCV 11 He came to the world that was his own, but his own people did not accept him. NIV 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. NCV 12 But to all who did accept him and believe in him he gave the right to become children of God. NIV 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- NCV 13 They did not become his children in any human way -- by any human parents or human desire. They were born of God. NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. NCV 14 The Word became a human and lived among us. We saw his glory -- the glory that belongs to the only Son of the Father -- and he was full of grace and truth. NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. NCV 15 John tells the truth about him and cries out, saying, "This is the One I told you about: 'The One who comes after me is greater than I am, because he was living before me.'" NIV 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " NCV 16 Because he was full of grace and truth, from him we all received one gift after another. NIV 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. NCV 17 The law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. NCV 18 No one has ever seen God. But God the only Son is very close to the Father, and he has shown us what God is like. NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known. NCV 19 Here is the truth Johnn told when the Jews in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, "Who are you?" NIV 19 Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. NCV 20 John spoke freely and did not refuse to answer. He said, "I am not the Christ." NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. " NCV 21 So they asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He answered, "No, I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" they asked. He answered, "No." NIV 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." NCV 22 Then they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to tell those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" NIV 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?" NCV 23 John told them in the words of the prophet Isaiah: "I am the voice of one calling out in the desert: 'Make the road straight for the Lord.'" NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' " NCV 24 Some Pharisees who had been sent asked John: NIV 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent NCV 25 "If you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet, why do you baptize people?" NIV 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" NCV 26 John answered, "I baptize with water, but there is one here with you that you don't know about. NIV 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. NCV 27 He is the One who comes after me. I am not good enough to untie the strings of his sandals." NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." NCV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan River, where John was baptizing people. NIV 28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. NCV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him. John said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! NCV 30 This is the One I was talking about when I said, 'A man will come after me, but he is greater than I am, because he was living before me.' NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' NCV 31 Even I did not know who he was, although I came baptizing with water so that the people of Israel would know who he is." NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." NCV 32 NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. NCV 33 Then John said, "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven in the form of a dove and rest on him. Until then I did not know who the Christ was. But the God who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'You will see the Spirit come down and rest on a man; he is the One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' NIV 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' NCV 34 I have seen this happen, and I tell you the truth: This man is the Son of God." NIV 34 I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God." NCV 35 The next day Johnn was there again with two of his followers. NIV 35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. NCV 36 When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" NIV 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" NCV 37 The two followers heard John say this, so they followed Jesus. NIV 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. NCV 38 When Jesus turned and saw them following him, he asked, "What are you looking for?" They said, "Rabbi, where are you staying?" ("Rabbi" means "Teacher.") NIV 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" NCV 39 He answered, "Come and see." So the two men went with Jesus and saw where he was staying and stayed there with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. NIV 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. NCV 40 One of the two men who followed Jesus after they heard John speak about him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. NIV 40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. NCV 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and say to him, "We have found the Messiah." ("Messiah" means "Christ.") NIV 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). NCV 42 Then Andrew took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas." ("Cephas" means "Peter."n) NIV 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which, when translated, is Peter ). NCV 43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." NIV 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." NCV 44 Philip was from the town of Bethsaida, where Andrew and Peter lived. NIV 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. NCV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the man that Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also wrote about him. He is Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth." NIV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." NCV 46 But Nathanael said to Philip, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip answered, "Come and see." NIV 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. NCV 47 As Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said, "Here is truly an Israelite. There is nothing false in him." NIV 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false." NCV 48 Nathanael asked, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered, "I saw you when you were under the fig tree, before Philip told you about me." NIV 48 "How do you know me?" Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you." NCV 49 Then Nathanael said to Jesus, "Teacher, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." NIV 49 Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." NCV 50 Jesus said to Nathanael, "Do you believe simply because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that." NIV 50 Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that." NCV 51 And Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and 'angels of God going up and coming down' on the Son of Man." NIV 51 He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
