NIRV 1 In the beginning, the Word was already there. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. NIV 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. NIRV 2 He was with God in the beginning. NIV 2 He was with God in the beginning. NIRV 3 All things were made through him. Nothing that has been made was made without him. NIV 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. NIRV 4 Life was in him, and that life was the light for all people. NIV 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. NIRV 5 The light shines in the darkness. But the darkness has not understood it. NIV 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. NIRV 6 A man came who was sent from God. His name was John. NIV 6 There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. NIRV 7 He came to give witness about that light. He gave witness so that all people could believe. NIV 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. NIRV 8 John himself was not the light. He came only as a witness to the light. NIV 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. NIRV 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. NIV 9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. NIRV 10 The Word was in the world that was made through him. But the world did not recognize him. NIV 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. NIRV 11 He came to what was his own. But his own people did not accept him. NIV 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. NIRV 12 Some people did accept him. They believed in his name. He gave them the right to become children of God. NIV 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- NIRV 13 To be a child of God has nothing to do with human parents. Children of God are not born because of human choice or because a husband wants them to be born. They are born because of what God does. NIV 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. NIRV 14 The Word became a human being. He made his home with us. We have seen his glory. It is the glory of the one and only Son. He came from the Father. And he was full of grace and truth. NIV 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. NIRV 15 John gives witness about him. He cries out and says, "This was the one I was talking about. I said, 'He who comes after me is more important than I am. He is more important because he existed before I was born.' " NIV 15 John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " NIRV 16 We have all received one blessing after another. God's grace is not limited. NIV 16 From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. NIRV 17 Moses gave us the law. Jesus Christ has given us grace and truth. NIV 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. NIRV 18 No one has ever seen God. But God, the one and only Son, is at the Father's side. He has shown us what God is like. NIV 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known. NIRV 19 The Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask John who he was. John gave witness to them. He said, "I am not the Christ." NIV 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ. " NIRV 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet we've been expecting?" they asked. "No," he answered. NIV 21 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." NIRV 22 They asked one last time, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" NIV 22 Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself ?" NIRV 23 John replied, using the words of Isaiah the prophet. John said, "I'm the messenger who is calling out in the desert, 'Make the way for the Lord straight.' "(Isaiah 40:3) NIV 23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' " NIRV 24 Some Pharisees who had been sent NIV 24 Now some Pharisees who had been sent NIRV 25 asked him, "If you are not the Christ, why are you baptizing people? Why are you doing that if you aren't Elijah or the Prophet we've been expecting?" NIV 25 questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" NIRV 26 "I baptize people with water," John replied. "But One is standing among you whom you do not know. NIV 26 "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know. NIRV 27 He is the One who comes after me. I am not good enough to untie his sandals." NIV 27 He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie." He takes away the sin of the world! NIV 29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! NIRV 30 This is the One I was talking about. I said, 'A man who comes after me is more important than I am. That's because he existed before I was born.' NIV 30 This is the one I meant when I said, 'A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' NIRV 31 I did not know him. But God wants to make it clear to Israel who this person is. That's the reason I came baptizing with water." NIV 31 I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." NIRV 32 Then John told them, "I saw the Holy Spirit come down from heaven like a dove. The Spirit remained on Jesus. NIV 32 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. NIRV 33 I would not have known him. But the One who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'You will see the Spirit come down and remain on someone. He is the One who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' NIV 33 I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' They said, "Rabbi, where are you staying?" "Rabbi" means Teacher. NIV 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?" They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?" NIRV 39 "Come," he replied. "You will see." So they went and saw where he was staying. They spent the rest of the day with him. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. NIV 39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. NIRV 40 Andrew was Simon Peter's brother. Andrew was one of the two disciples who heard what John had said. He had also followed Jesus. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me." NIV 43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me." NIRV 44 Philip was from the town of Bethsaida. So were Andrew and Peter. NIV 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. NIRV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the One that Moses wrote about in the Law. The prophets also wrote about him. He is Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." NIV 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." NIRV 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. NIV 46 "Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," said Philip. NIV 51 He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
