John 12

BBE 1 Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had made to come back from the dead. NIV 1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. BBE 2 So they made him a meal there, and he was waited on by Martha, and Lazarus was among those who were seated with him at table. NIV 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. BBE 3 Then Mary, taking a pound of perfumed oil of great value, put it on the feet of Jesus and made them dry with her hair: and the house became full of the smell of the perfume. NIV 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. BBE 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was to give him up), said, NIV 4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, BBE 5 Why was not this perfume traded for three hundred pence, and the money given to the poor? NIV 5 "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages. " BBE 6 (He said this, not because he had any love for the poor; but because he was a thief, and, having the money-bag, took for himself what was put into it.) NIV 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. BBE 7 Then Jesus said, Let her be. Let her keep what she has for the day of my death. NIV 7 "Leave her alone," Jesus replied. "[It was intended] that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. BBE 8 The poor you have ever with you, but me you have not for ever. NIV 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me." BBE 9 Then a great number of the Jews had news that he was there: and they came, not only because of Jesus, but so that they might see Lazarus who had been dead and to whom he had given life. NIV 9 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. BBE 10 Now there was talk among the chief priests of putting Lazarus to death; NIV 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, BBE 11 For because of him a great number of the Jews went away and had belief in Jesus. NIV 11 for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and putting their faith in him. BBE 12 The day after, a great number of people who were there for the feast, when they had the news that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, NIV 12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. BBE 13 Took branches of palm-trees and went out to him, crying, A blessing on him who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel! NIV 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna! " "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the King of Israel!" BBE 14 And Jesus saw a young ass and took his seat on it; as the Writings say, NIV 14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, BBE 15 Have no fear, daughter of Zion: see your King is coming, seated on a young ass. NIV 15 "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt." BBE 16 (These things were not clear to his disciples at first: but when Jesus had been lifted up into his glory, then it came to their minds that these things in the Writings were about him and that they had been done to him.) NIV 16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him. BBE 17 Now the people who were with him when his voice came to Lazarus in the place of the dead, and gave him life again, had been talking about it. NIV 17 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. BBE 18 And that was the reason the people went out to him, because it had come to their ears that he had done this sign. NIV 18 Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him. BBE 19 Then the Pharisees said one to another, You see, you are unable to do anything: the world has gone after him. NIV 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!" BBE 20 Now there were some Greeks among the people who had come up to give worship at the feast: NIV 20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast. BBE 21 They came to Philip, who was of Beth-saida in Galilee, and made a request, saying, Sir, we have a desire to see Jesus. NIV 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus." BBE 22 Philip went and gave word of it to Andrew; and Andrew went with Philip to Jesus. NIV 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. BBE 23 And Jesus said to them in answer, The hour of the glory of the Son of man has come. NIV 23 Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. BBE 24 Truly I say to you, If a seed of grain does not go into the earth and come to an end, it is still a seed and no more; but through its death it gives much fruit. NIV 24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. BBE 25 He who is in love with life will have it taken from him; and he who has no care for his life in this world will keep it for ever and ever. NIV 25 The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. BBE 26 If any man is my servant, let him come after me; and where I am, there will my servant be. If any man becomes my servant, my Father will give him honour. NIV 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. BBE 27 Now is my soul troubled; and what am I to say? Father, keep me from this hour. No: for this purpose have I come to this hour. NIV 27 "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. BBE 28 Father, give glory to your name. Then there came a voice out of heaven, saying, I have given it glory, and I will give it glory again. NIV 28 Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." BBE 29 Hearing the sound, a number of people who were there said that it was thunder: others said, An angel was talking to him. NIV 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. BBE 30 Jesus said in answer, This voice came not for me but for you. NIV 30 Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine. BBE 31 Now is this world to be judged: now will the ruler of this world be sent out. NIV 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. BBE 32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will make all men come to me. NIV 32 But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." BBE 33 (This he said, pointing to the sort of death he would have.) NIV 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die. BBE 34 Then the people in answer said to him, The law says that the Christ will have life without end: how say you then that it is necessary for the Son of man to be lifted up? Who is this Son of man? NIV 34 The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?" BBE 35 Jesus said to them, For a little time longer the light will be among you; while you have the light go on walking in it, so that the dark may not overtake you: one walking in the dark has no knowledge of where he is going. NIV 35 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. BBE 36 In so far as you have the light, put your faith in the light so that you may become sons of light. With these words Jesus went away and for a time was not seen again by them. NIV 36 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them. BBE 37 But though he had done such a number of signs before them, they still had no belief in him: NIV 37 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. BBE 38 So that the words of the prophet Isaiah might come true, when he said, Lord, who has any belief in our preaching? and the arm of the Lord, to whom has it been unveiled? NIV 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" BBE 39 For this reason they were unable to have belief, because Isaiah said again, NIV 39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: BBE 40 He has made their eyes blind, and their hearts hard; for fear that they might see with their eyes and get knowledge with their hearts, and be changed, and I might make them well. NIV 40 "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them." BBE 41 (Isaiah said these words because he saw his glory. His words were about him.) NIV 41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him. BBE 42 However, a number even of the rulers had belief in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not say so openly for fear that they might be shut out from the Synagogue: NIV 42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; BBE 43 For the praise of men was dearer to them than the approval of God. NIV 43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God. BBE 44 Then Jesus said with a loud voice, He who has faith in me, has faith not in me, but in him who sent me. NIV 44 Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. BBE 45 And he who sees me, sees him who sent me. NIV 45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. BBE 46 I have come as a light into the world, so that no one who has faith in me will go on living in the dark. NIV 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. BBE 47 And if any man gives ear to my words and does not keep them, I am not his judge: I did not come to be judge of the world but to give salvation to the world. NIV 47 "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. BBE 48 He who puts me on one side and does not take my words to heart, is not without a judge: the word which I have said will be his judge on the last day. NIV 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. BBE 49 For I have not said it on my authority, but the Father who sent me gave me orders what to say and how to say it. NIV 49 For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. BBE 50 And I have knowledge that his order is eternal life: so that the things which I say, I say them even as the Father says them to me. NIV 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."
