John 12:37-50

NRS 37 Although he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him. NIV 37 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. NRS 38 This was to fulfill the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah: "Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" NIV 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" NRS 39 And so they could not believe, because Isaiah also said, NIV 39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: NRS 40 "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, so that they might not look with their eyes, and understand with their heart and turn— and I would heal them." NIV 40 "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them." NRS 41 Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke about him. NIV 41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him. NRS 42 Nevertheless many, even of the authorities, believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; NIV 42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; NRS 43 for they loved human glory more than the glory that comes from God. NIV 43 for they loved praise from men more than praise from God. NRS 44 Then Jesus cried aloud: "Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me. NIV 44 Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. NRS 45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. NIV 45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. NRS 46 I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness. NIV 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. NRS 47 I do not judge anyone who hears my words and does not keep them, for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. NIV 47 "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. NRS 48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my word has a judge; on the last day the word that I have spoken will serve as judge, NIV 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. NRS 49 for I have not spoken on my own, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment about what to say and what to speak. NIV 49 For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. NRS 50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I speak, therefore, I speak just as the Father has told me." NIV 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say."
